LinkedIn Rolls Out New Verification Features on Job Posts to Enhance Platform Safety

0

Business and employment-focused social media platform LinkedIn has rolled out new verification features on job posts, to enhance platform safety.

The platform will begin to show verifications on job postings, displaying verified information about a job poster or their company, which will help users determine whether they are applying for a legitimate job or not.

When users see verifications on job posts, that means there is information that has been verified as authentic by the job poster, LinkedIn, or one of its partners. The verified information will show whether the poster is affiliated with an official company page, has verified their work email or workplace, or their government ID was verified through CLEAR, which is a secure identity platform.

The company wrote via a blog post,

“When you see verifications on job posts, that means there is information that has been verified as authentic by the job poster, LinkedIn, or one of our partners.

“We’re showing these verifications to help you feel confident in your search and give recruiters the opportunity to build trust with potential candidates. Verifications on job postings are just rolling out, and as we expand access to our free verification tools, you’ll see even more across the jobs you’re exploring.”

LinkedIn noted that verifications on job postings have just started rolling out, so while users may not see them yet, the tools will be more prevalent as the company expands access. In the meantime, the platform has urged users to check out tips on how to spot and avoid suspicious job postings.

This feature comes in very handy as LinkedIn is working tirelessly to get rid of spam accounts that have spread on the platform, and to also ensure that users’ safety is guaranteed.

LinkedIn is also integrating more artificial intelligence features into the platform to make it easier for users to find jobs and offer a better service. Recall that the platform integrated a new tool that helps users enhance their profiles with AI-generated writing suggestions as well as helping them save time and energy by generating job description texts.

The new feature helps users create appealing “about” and “headline” sections based on their background and strong sides. AI identifies the most important skills and experiences to highlight on users profile and generates a suitable text to make their profile stand out.

Last month, LinkedIn introduced new ways to verify users identity and where they work. Unlike with Twitter and Meta, LinkedIn’s new verification measures don’t include paid subscriptions or blue checkmarks. The social media platform said it believes verification should be available for everyone, which is why its verification features will be available to all users for free.

Battling for the Soul of Microchips – US vs China

0

If you ever have to design microchips, you must also write a special type of software which makes it possible for hardware to talk to software.  There are many levels here. You have the BIOS (or loosely firmware) which is the elemental software that enables microprocessors to boot up before they handshake to other software. From the BIOS, you get to the operating systems like Windows before you can get to applications like Microsoft Office, Chrome, etc.

If you are making sensors like webcams you need to make firmware that will make it possible for the hardware to be recognized by another level of software. This is the most important part of the technology industry because if you cannot get this working, everything built on top will crash. In short, you cannot even build anything because you will have no product.

Before Facebook Likes, before the photos on Instagram, before the search on Google, and indeed everything we do in the world of online computing, what happens in those microchips’ firmware defines all.

And in that firmware, many bad things could be done. Yes, the person who controls firmware controls national security. This is where China and the USA are battling because when they inspect those chips, they see “codes” they do not like. Today, China is after Micron, a maker of memory chips.

China is making a retaliatory move that will see the products of US memory chip company, Micron Technology, banned in the country.

Beijing on Sunday declared the products of Micron Technology a “national security” risk, escalating its tech war with Washington. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said during the announcement that Micron poses “serious network security risks”.

It may not have to do with anything Micron has there; simply, China is returning the love the US has given Huawei. The 21st century will be defined on the terms these two countries construct as the animosity moves into a stable state!

Comment on Feed

Comment 1: The legendary and most experienced diplomat out there, Henry Kissinger, who will turn 100 later this week, was interviewed by The Economist recently, his take on US-China relation is something to pay close attention to. Whether it’s AI or semiconductor, how both nations manage their differences will define the next phase of our world.

The people we see as adults and call world leaders aren’t really good at leading anyone, and that is why our world is getting messier. Don’t trust any of these creatures to make sound judgments, they are never very far from chaos.

If you push too much and the other person miscalculates, then everything will go wrong from there.

Comment 2: Prof. Sir, the teacher part of you explained microchips so plainly that even a primary school pupil can understand.
This so-called chips story in started with Donald Trump administration where Huawei was accused of comprising the security of American at the chip level in their equipment used in American. China responded by launching a an android-likw mobile OS called harmony. Many of the phones used in Nigeria and other African countries that are presumed to be using Android OS are actually using the Harmony operating system. Samsung phones are few of the popular brands that use Google’s Android OS.

China Bans Micron’s Products, A Major US Chipmaker, from Key Projects, Citing National Security Risks

The development marks China’s major move against a US chip company in retaliation to the recent decision by Washington mandating US chip companies to cut supplies to China.

“The review found that Micron’s products have serious network security risks, which pose significant security risks to China’s critical information infrastructure supply chain, affecting China’s national security,” the CAC said in a statement.

The CAC’s announcement means the firm’s products will be banned from key infrastructure projects in China. The agency did not give details of the risks it said it had found or in which Micron products it had found them.

The tech and economic supremacy contest going on between the US and China have put some companies in jeopardy. For instance, Huawei, a Chinese telecom vendor, was leading the global 5G roll out before Washington doled out a series of sanctions against the giant – forcing it off track.

Last year, President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 into law. The Act which empowers the US semiconductor industry with $52.7 billion in funding for five years was designed to help the US to maintain its lead over China in chip production.

China has also made arrangements to boost local chip production in the wake of US restrictions.

A spokesperson for Micron confirmed to the BBC that the company had “received the CAC’s notice following its review of Micron products sold in China”.

“We are evaluating the conclusion and assessing our next steps. We look forward to continuing to engage in discussions with Chinese authorities,” the spokesperson added.

Micron’s share price dropped by 5.3% in pre-market trading in the US, following the news.

In response to the development, the BBC quoted the US government as saying that it would work with allies to address “distortions of the memory chip market caused by China’s actions”.

“We firmly oppose restrictions that have no basis in fact,” a US Commerce Department spokesperson said.

“This action, along with recent raids and targeting of other American firms, is inconsistent with [China’s] assertions that it is opening its markets and committed to a transparent regulatory framework.”

The tension between the US and China intensified in the wake of global chip shortage induced by covid-19 pandemic.

The decision by the CAC is likely going to impact Micron, who has seen China as a key market – where it generated around 10% of its full-year sales. Out of the $30.7bn total revenue the company generated in 2022, $3.3bn came from mainland China. Micron has manufacturing facilities in the country.

However, analysts at investment banking group Jefferies quoted by the BBC said “the ultimate impact [of the ban] on Micron will be quite limited” because it does not rely on the Chinese government or telecommunication for most of the sales it generates in the country.
