Nigeria Trains 60 Youth on Digital Skills for Content Creation Industry

0

In a bid to empower young Nigerians with relevant digital skills, the federal government of Nigeria recently concluded the training of 60 youths in content creation, distribution, and monetization.

Speaking on the training, The Executive Director, National Films and Video Censors Board, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas commended the youths for the commitment shown towards the training.

He disclosed that a large number of them have gotten support in the digital content creation space while noting that they are already maximizing their potential through innovation and technology.

In his words, “I must specifically commend our youths, who regardless of daunting social and economic challenges, have continued to show resilience and push for self-sustenance.

“Some of you have found succor in the digital content space, maximizing your potential through innovation and technology. This is our motivation for setting aside these two days for the training of 50 selected emerging youth talents and entrepreneurs in “Understanding the Modules for OTT Streaming and its Components.”

“This is an initiative driven by the need to attract young minds into the industry to significantly drive employment, and economic growth and create an avenue for interaction between the young and the old in the digital film ecosystem.

“This training has been specially curated just for you. You will be interacting with an array of proven and established industry experts and global industry players. You have a huge opportunity to improve your skills, and secure mentorship and collaboration.

“You must, however, play by defined rules. It is required that you subject your production to the approval of the Board for classification. While we remain conscious of not stifling creativity, we must also be the vanguard for the protection of our moral values as a society”.

The DG further disclosed that the initiative was driven by the need to attract young minds into the industry to significantly drive employment, and economic growth and create an avenue.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Education had disclosed that the country’s teeming youth unemployment is linked to a lack of specific skills required for the job market among graduates. An estimated 4.5 million enter the job market annually with only a 10 percent absorption rate.

Other challenges include skills mismatch between the labour market and the educational system, with over 60 percent of graduates lacking basic digital skills to compete in the 21st-century digital economy.

This skills gap has created a shortfall of an adequately skilled and educated workforce which is one of the major constraints to the growth and development of the country.

It is highly commendable that the government has been intentional about closing the skills gap, as there have been efforts focused on several skills and digital capacity-building initiatives.

The EFCC Chairman is not above the law in Nigeria

0

The news that Justice Chizoba Oji of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has ordered that the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa be arrested and committed to the Kuje prison for contempt of court was quite unbelievable to many people.

Some people have raised the issue of; “whether a high-profile executive like the chairman of the EFCC can be sent to jail while still in office or if a judge has the power to send to prison a high-profile executive like a serving chairman of the EFCC”?

Readers should therefore note that the office of the chairman of the EFCC is not shielded by “executive immunity” by the constitution or by any other subsisting law, hence, a judge has the power in the exercise of his judicial function to send the occupant of that office to jail if need so be.

The reason why the Honorable justice ordered that the chairman of the anti-graft agency be committed at the Kuje prison is because the chairman neglected and willfully disobeyed the order of the court; On the 21st Day of November 2018, the court in a judgment ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abuja to return to the Plaintiff/applicant his Range Rover (Supercharge) and the sum of N40, 000,000.00 (Forty Million Naira) which was taken and confiscated by the EFCC. The Efcc failed to honor that order of the court and that amounts to contempt of the court. (Do check our previous essay on contempt of court to fully understand what contempt of court means).

In reading today’s judgement, the court held inter Alia; “Having continued wilfully in disobedience to the order of this court, he should be committed to prison at Kuje Correctional Centre for his disobedience, and continued disobedience of the said order of court made on November 21st, 2018, until he purges himself of the contempt”.

The judge further mandated that the Inspector General of police ensure that the order so given that the EFCC chairman be arrested and sent to the Kuje prison is executed with immediate effect.

One can posit that this judgment of the court to send the chairman to jail is an attempt to embarrass and ridicule the person of the chairman and the office he occupies but the chairman first ridiculed the court by willfully disobeying and refusing to honor the order of the court and if everybody disobeys the order of the court the judiciary as an institution will collapse.

This judgment will stand as a litmus test to show that nobody is above the law and the judiciary is always there with long “koboko” to lash out at anybody despite your status in society if you fail to act accordingly.

I just voted – The American Orchestra of Democrats and Republicans

0

I just voted – from top to bottom DEMOCRATS. The Republicans are amazing. The Democrats are amazing. But having been raised in Nigeria and coming to America, I see two major contrasts in governing philosophies. In the ranking of top 20 US universities, more than 90% of those schools are in democratic-run cities.

From Harvard to Johns Hopkins to UT Austin, one thing is clear: democratic cities incubate and nurture the best knowledge systems in America. In the ranking of the largest cities in America, democratic-run cities occupy more than 80% of the top 20. For me, that is statistically significant.

What is that significance? The sheer energy of many can accomplish great things and a governing philosophy that goes through a strong public investment will serve more people. Of course, the republican spirit of personal liberty and quasi-libertarian viewport are catalysts which deliver a unified system that makes America work like a great orchestra.

Indeed before the public can spend, people/companies must make the money which has to be taxed. So, in the end, at the high level, Republicans and Democrats operate in a symbiotic framework which continues to elevate America.

The Democrats are the operators while the Republicans are regulators. Together, they ensure the American system is not broken.

Comment 1: Prof just say in your opinion. This is not true. 90% of the democratic states have high rates of crime (NY, California, etc).

My Response: The top 7 are Republican states.

  • Tennessee.
  • Arkansas.
  • Louisiana.
  • Missouri.
  • South Carolina.
  • South Dakota.
  • Arizona.
  • Michigan.

Comment 1b: Verify the number of people leaving California and NY to Texas, Florida… Someone said inflation is 5.3 and has been reduced from what it use to be 2 years ago. I shook my head

My Response: Again, since I quoted Fox, you did not like it, let me quote Bloomberg “California Defies Doom With No. 1 U.S. Economy. The Golden State has no peers when it comes to expanding GDP, raising household income, investing in innovation and a host of other key metrics. ” Notice, it says “no peers” which means no state comes close.

On people leaving CA, California is poised to overtake Germany as the world’s 4th largest economy. What that means is this: even if few leave, they are growing and taking more economic wealth from everyone. In other words, they’re more efficient.

Comment 2: So the manifestoes of the individual candidates don’t matter? Then why are you preaching the opposite to Nigerians concerning the 2023 elections?

My Response: Nigeria has no party – so individuals drive all. 80% of APC leaders were in PDP or AD. In US, there are parties. That is the difference. So, In Nigeria, you cannot vote by party because parties have no core philosophies to govern. With parties the same, you focus on people.

Twitter Daily Usage Accelerates After Musk Takeover

0

Following the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk, the microblogging platform has recorded more downloads with a daily usage growth.

In one of the company’s documents, it revealed that Twitter’s monetization daily usage growth increased to more than 20 percent after Musk’s takeover.

In the first week of Musk’s acquisition of the company, daily active usage growth hit an all-time high, crossing over 250 million members.

Twitter’s largest market, the U.S, is growing even more quickly,” according to the document. It has earned more ad revenue from the United States alone than all other markets combined in its fourth quarter,

The micro-blogging platform has so far added more than 15 million monetization daily members, “crossing the quarter billion mark”. It last reported 237.8 million mDAUs and a 16.6 percent annual growth for its second quarter.

Reacting to the increase in the number of members on the platform, Musk Tweeted “Twitter usage is at an all-time high lol. “I just hope the servers don’t melt!”.

Recall that in September, Musk had asked a question if the platform was dying as most top accounts post very little content. He tweeted, “Most of these top accounts tweet rarely and post very little. Is Twitter dying”.

However, the recent increase in the number of usage and downloads of the micro-blogging platform is coming amid the chaos where several companies had to halt their ads, citing that Musk’s content moderation policy might pose a challenge to their businesses.

Reacting to this, the Tesla billionaire blamed pressure activists group for spurring the pullback of advertisers on the platform.

However, Musk reassured advertisers that the platform will not become a “free-for-all hellscape,” saying that Twitter “aspires to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that strengthens their brand and grows their enterprise.”

Despite Musk’s assurance to advertisers, several U.S companies such as Audi of America, United Airlines, Mondelez India, Pfizer, and General Mills have disclosed that they were temporarily halting their ads on the platform.

According to reports, globally, Ads Sales contribute over three-fourths of Twitter’s revenue.

In the week following Elon Musk’s Oct. 29 Twitter takeover, the social network’s monetizable daily usage growth hit “all-time highs.” An internal document seen by The Verge reveals Twitter added more than 15 million mDaus, or an uptick of over 20%. The numbers suggest members are not quitting the social network in droves like many threatened to once Musk took over. Meanwhile, Twitter is asking “dozens” of workers to come back, Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous sources, following last Friday’s layoffs. These sources claim some of those people were made redundant by mistake. (LinkedIn News)
