Google Shuts Down Its Translate Service in China

0

American tech companies are giving up efforts to stay afloat in China amidst censorship that has made their operations difficult.

On Monday, Google announced that it has shut down its Google Translate service in mainland China due to low usage, marking the end of one of its last remaining products in the South Asian country.

CNBC reports that the dedicated mainland China website for Google Translate now redirects users to the Hong Kong version of the service – but it is not accessible from mainland China.

“We are discontinuing Google Translate in mainland China due to low usage,” Google said in a statement.

Late last year, LinkedIn, the only American-based social media company allowed in China, announced that it’s shutting down its services due to growing censorship that had severely limited users’ freedom of expression.

This is the trajectory for American tech companies not outrightly banned in China, giving equivalent Chinese companies the opportunity to thrive.

CNBC noted that, like others, Google has had a fraught relationship with the Chinese market. For instance, in 2010, the tech giant pulled its search engine from China in because of strict government censorship online. Its other services — such as Google Maps and Gmail — are also effectively blocked by the Chinese government.

Local competitors such as search engine Baidu and social media and gaming giant Tencent have capitalized on the gap to dominate the Chinese internet landscape in areas from search to translation.

Google’s attempts to penetrate the Chinese market had met a brick wall due to the country’s strict rules and free speech advocates calling on tech companies not to enable China’s censorship by playing by their muzzling rules. CNBC reports below how in addition to censorship, the US – China soured relationship is adding to the ordeal of US tech companies in China.

Google has a very limited presence in China these days. Some of its hardware including smartphones are made in China. But The New York Times reported last month that Google has shifted some production of its Pixel smartphones to Vietnam.

The company is also looking to try to get Chinese developers to make apps for its Android operating system globally that will then be available via the Google Play Store, even though that’s blocked in China.

In 2018, Google was exploring reentering China with its search engine, but ultimately scrapped that project after backlash from employees and politicians.

American businesses have been caught in the middle of continued tensions in the technology sphere between the U.S. and China. Washington continues to fret over China’s potential access to sensitive technologies in areas such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

In August, U.S. chipmaker Nvidia disclosed that Washington will restrict the company’s sales of specific components to China.

The Media of America As Channels Focus On Political Tribes

1

I used to think that CNN was absolutely reliable and credible across all domains. Not even close. It is only credible when it comes to business. But on geopolitics and politics, it is a biased media organization. Nonetheless, in America, if you have a scale of 1 to 10 (10 highest), on professionalism and credibility, CNN gets 6.  Others like Fox and NBC get 4.  Those are agenda news media and if you watch them, you would be tripped badly.

Without Fox, Trump would not have become president. And without NBC/CNN, Biden might not have had it easier. These channels have their tribes because in politics, you win with tribes. Being at the center as a TV channel on politics is hopeless and never a good business.

At the global level, from BBC to CNN, consistency disappears: Russia bombed a prison it controls 100%, a power plant it controls 100%, a pipeline it built with its money, etc. And the most laughable: we would not name the lady who used bomb to kill a woman in Russia because we had not “independently” confirmed it even though AP, Reuters, etc have named the woman. You will then wonder when CNN confirms all war atrocities before reporting or giving names. When you see the double standard in how they approach geopolitics, you understand one thing: they are humans; do not expect me not to be biased reporting about Ovim, Abia State.

That said, for Trump to sue CNN means that he does not understand he himself is a media organization. He called people “rapists”, “crazy”, etc – and he was fine with those. The “TrumpTV” by the ex-president himself was more verbally lethal than CNN when you see his denigration of Obama birthplace. I wish him luck as he sues CNN (limited chance there to win) but will only add that whatever ordinance he uses to win his case, should be applied against him, on what he has also said about others, including Africans.

Former U.S President Donald Trump has sued multinational cable news channel CNN, accusing the channel of waging a campaign of libel and slander against him over fears that he will run for the presidential position again in 2024.

He alleged that CNN uses its trusted news source to defame him in the minds of its viewers and readers with a series of scandalous reports.

In a 29-page lawsuit filed in a US District Court in Florida by Trump’s lawyers, it reads “CNN’s highly defamatory and persistent association of the plaintiff to Hitler and Hitler’s “Big Lie” is no mistake.

“It is wanton and malicious reporting intended to feed a narrative and to achieve the desired end to cause readers and viewers to associate the plaintiff with the lowest of low, to fear him, to not vote for him, and to support campaigns against him.

“Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about the plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its massive influence, purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source, to defame the plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically,” the filing states.

“As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the Left, CNN has tried to taint the plaintiff with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler.”

Donald Trump is demanding the sum of $475 million in punitive damages from the cable company.

Trump and CNN have for a long time had an unending brawl, as the two parties are always at loggerheads. During his reign as the U.S president, Trump had a caustic relationship with CNN and other major news outlets like The New York Times during his presidency, branding them “fake news” and repeatedly raging against them on social media.

Following the election that brought in the current U.S president Joe Biden, Trump had alleged that there was electoral fraud in the election noting that he was the rightful winner of the election where he filed a lawsuit.

Following his lawsuit, at least 86 judges including some of the judges appointed by Trump have so far rejected lawsuits attempting to overturn the 2020 results.

The former head of Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency disclosed that the election was fair and secure.

A team of Republican lawyers, judges and ex-senators has also concluded there was no widespread voter fraud that could have tipped the election to Trump.

For the months and years that have followed the 2020 election, CNN took it upon itself to engage in a campaign of discussion, branding President Trump a liar, and one who subscribes to the notion of the ‘Big Lie.

CNN repeatedly reminds its readers that the Ex U.S President is likened to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels.
