Wike Denies Filing Lawsuit Against Atiku, PDP and Others on Nigeria’s PDP Presidential Primaries

0

Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike has debunked the report that he filed a lawsuit against the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, challenging his emergence as the party’s flagbearer.

Wike allegedly filed the lawsuit alongside Michael Ekamon, a PDP member, against Atiku, the PDP, Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal and Nigeria’s electoral body INEC.

But in an interview with ThisDay, the governor denied taking any legal steps against anyone respecting the result of the PDP’s primary election. He said he does not know the lawyers who might have filed the lawsuit.

“I don’t know anything about the so called suit. I did not ask anyone to file any suit for me,” he said.

“I don’t know the lawyers,” he added. “Am I a kid to be filing a suit at this time? I had 14 days after the primary within which to have filed any suit. I didn’t do that then, is it two months after primary I will file a suit?

Wike attributed the report to mischief makers, citing another matter he said was falsely reported about him.

“Just yesterday they came up with the claim that I ordered my Chief Security Officer to pull down PDP flag in Government House. This is all false, it’s all propaganda. Some people are trying to use me to win the election. Please disregard all these lies,” he said.

Wike was aggrieved by the outcome of the PDP’s primary election after Tambuwal stepped down from the race for Atiku, and has since refused to support the former vice president’s presidential ambition.

According to legal documents filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which was published by ChannelsTV, Wike and Ekamon had asked the court to determine eight issues, including if it is illegal for votes originally meant for Tambuwal to be transferred to Atiku. In addition, the plaintiffs prayed the court to see whether Tambuwal lost his claim to votes the moment he stepped down for Atiku.

The co-applicants argued that should these issues be determined in their favour, the court should grant nine reliefs including a declaration that the purported transfer of Tambuwal’s votes to Atiku be declared null and void.

The plaintiffs are also seeking a declaration that the PDP acted negligently and in bad faith by assigning the Sokoto governor’s votes to Atiku at the primary.

They are praying the court to cancel the transfer of votes and a corresponding order restraining the 3rd respondent (Tambuwal’s) withdrawal in the primary was done after voting had commenced.”

The applicants also prayed the court to declare that the PDP and Atiku took undue advantage of Tambuwal’s withdrawal when they allowed the Sokoto governor to persuade delegates to vote for the former Vice-President in the primary.

Wike and Ekamon asked the court to order INEC to reject or remove Atiku from “its list of candidates in the 2023 presidential election.”

They are also seeking an order commanding the PDP to recount the votes of the primary that was held on May 28 and May 29.

Lastly, the applicants are seeking an order of the court “directing the 1st respondent (PDP) to declare the 2nd applicant (Wike), a presidential aspirant in the May 28 and May 29 primary as the winner of the aforesaid primary with a corresponding order directing the 1st respondent (PDP) to forward his name as the candidate to contest the presidential election in 2023.”

In a supporting affidavit he deposed to, Ekamon noted that he was a member of the PDP and attested to the fact that Wike won the presidential election.

He maintained that Tambuwal withdrew from the contest after voting had commenced and directed that his votes be assigned to Atiku.

Efforts by the party to reconcile the characters involved in the infighting have proved futile. Wike has demanded the resignation of the PDP’s Chairman Iyorcha Aliu as his condition for peace.

But speaking at the commissioning of House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State governor maintained that he didn’t not take Atiku and the PDP to court as he is focused on his job.

“People have called me that I went to court against Atiku Abubakar,” he said. “I want to state categorically that I didn’t go to court. I just want to say it for Nigerians to know. I have kept quiet. I am busy with delivering the dividends of democracy.

“If they lose election, nobody should call my name. I have told the candidate.

“If I wanted to go to court, I would have gone to court within two weeks. It is the candidate’s group that are doing all these things. Let the world hear. They are the ones plotting all these things, thinking they will spoil my name.

“We are supposed to be talking about winning election.”

ARM Launches Workspace For Startups In Lagos

0

Recall that Assets and Resource management holding company (ARM) last month, on the 19th of July 2022, held a meeting in Lagos, with the theme “Building The Next Set Of Unicorns”.

In the meeting, they disclosed how they intend to set up Labs, to support Fintech and Proptech startups who are poised to use innovation in solving problems across Africa.

It is interesting to know ARM has walked the talk, as the company recently launched a state-of-the-art   innovation workspace for Fintech startups selected in the ARM labs innovation program.

The workspace, with its headquarters located in Ikoyi, Lagos, was birthed in fulfillment of the organization’s commitment to providing a well-equipped location where startups in the country can develop their businesses and gain access to mentors within the ecosystem.

The establishment of this workspace is coming after ARM partner Techstars accelerator, solidified Lagos as Africa’s most attractive tech hub. Reports disclose that the newly built workspace is well equipped with access to Wi-Fi, designed workstations, a PS5 entertainment console for relaxation, a meeting room, and a communal area.

During the launch of the ARM lab, the managing director of ARM Pensions, Mr. Wale Odutola stated that the platform presented to Startups in Nigeria, was to provide them with the opportunity to scale their businesses and help fine-tune how they go into the market.

He further stated that the program will assist startups to develop business relationships within and outside Nigeria.

In his words;

“It is not every day you have the opportunity to partner with an established firm that has over a million clients and focuses on course development and services. We are also a business that tends to be more protective of the things we create.

“This is a great opportunity to test the extent of our mentorship and hopefully come out on the other side transformed and ready to break new ground”.

Also, The managing Director of ARM Academy, Uche Azubike disclosed that the ARM labs innovation program is a learning environment, where startups will have the opportunity to interact with other businesses. He advised startups not to limit their mindsets, as they have the opportunity to do as much as they can.

This is a commendable initiative from ARM as they constantly offer wealth creation solutions and opportunities to fintechs in the country through support programs to facilitate and encourage innovative growth in the financial services industry in the country.

It is interesting to note that ARM currently manages total assets of approximately N1.6 trillion as of December 2021. With these programs offering support to startups in the country, I have the inkling that many more unicorns will emerge from this country, adding to the pre-existing ones. This will also make the city a hotbed for investors and also have a positive impact on the revenue.

[Updated] Nigeria 2023: Atiku sued, Wike Listed As Plaintiff in a PDP Presidential Primary Legal Matter

1

Update: Good People, I have received more info on the alleged Nyesom Wike (governor of Rivers State)  suit challenging Atiku’s ascension as the PDP presidential flagbearer for the 2023 election. Apparently Wike did not file the suit even though he was listed as a plaintiff! The case # is FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022 filed at the Federal High Court.

Plaintiff: Nyesom Wike, Newgent Ekamon

Responders:  PDP, INEC, Tambuwal (governor of Sokoto), Atiku

The original confusion was that because he was listed as a plaintiff that it must have originated directly from him. It does appear that he was listed as plaintiff even though he possibly did not originate it. That said, nothing in his denial invalidates the premise since the other plaintiff has not dropped the case. In other words, PDP, Atiku and others have to respond to avoid legal surprises! Yet, I would have expected that this suit is statute barred looking at the time between the primaries and the filing

Comment – Wike has denied filing this case.

My Response: Again, this piece did not say otherwise. He was listed as a plaintiff which 99% of the time will mean he was a party to the case. His denial is irrelevant as the other party is still pursuing it. Why do I say that? If Atiku, PDP, etc do not respond to the court summons and sleep with Wike’s denial statements, the judge will rule against them, and award everything prayed [Wike is the PDP candidate]. If that happens, Wike can benefit by being compelled by the court to become PDP flagbearer. Lol.

Sure, Wike has denied it. But he has to make it official by going to court to withdraw his name. If not, the case will move on.

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has gone to court to challenge the outcome of PDP’s presidential primaries, making a case that he “won” the contest, Premium Times reports: “Mr Wike seeks, among other prayers, the court’s pronouncement declaring him the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election. In the suit, Mr Wike sued the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Atiku, and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State as defendants.”

When I wrote after that election that Wike would have won if not for the withdrawal of Tambuwal, many here contested that thesis. Today, it seems to be the basis of this suit: “In a supporting affidavit that he deposed, Mr Ekamon, the co-plaintiff, noted that he was a member of the PDP and attested to the fact that Mr Wike won the presidential election. He maintained that Mr Tambuwal withdrew from the contest after voting had commenced and directed that his votes be assigned to Atiku.”

People, if they do not manage this immediately, PDP would be gone. I see no path how PDP will thrive if the two leading figures are fighting in the court. Wike is a pillar in PDP no matter how you see it. Atiku is a known brand. If both are fighting, PDP’s umbrella may be leaking water before the big rain!

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary.

It comes as a signal that recent efforts by the party to reconcile him with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has not yielded positive result.

Mr Wike seeks, among other prayers, the court’s pronouncement declaring him the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

In the suit, Mr Wike sued the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Atiku, and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State as defendants.

According to court documents, the PDP is listed as the first respondent while Atiku is the 2nd respondent.

Punch newspaper reports that the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022, has Mr Wike and a PDP chieftain, Newgent Ekamon, as the plaintiffs.

Update. From ThisDay

From ThisDay: “Rivers State Governor, Mr Nyesom Wike few moments ago (Friday) distanced himself from a purported suit said to have been filed by him seeking the removal of Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s general election. This comes few hours after some media outfits had reported that Wike had ordered the removal of PDP flags in Rivers State government house,  which also turned out to be false. In an exclusive chat with THISDAY, the Governor denied knowing anything whatsoever about the purported suit or even knowing the lawyers who filed the suit in the first instance. “I don’t know anything about the so called suit. I did not ask anyone to file any suit for me”.

Comment: Wike has debunked this news.

My Response: My understanding is that the newspaper reported a court case, not Wike said “Punch newspaper reports that the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022, has Mr Wike and a PDP chieftain, Newgent Ekamon, as the plaintiffs.” Check if that court number is fake. What Wike said is irrelevant. Punch which broke the news which PT picked is reporting from the court filing.

Comment: Good day Sir, i see an update in the newspaper dailies. Read here.

My Response: that did not say the suit # FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022, is fake. That court case exists. What Wike is saying does not matter because this is a court case. If that was filed without his knowledge, he needs to sue the lawyers who filed them. But “denying” the suit is not good enough.

Airtel Post Share Gains Of 10%, As Company Shareholders Earn N651 Billion

0

Telecommunications company Airtel, is no doubt having a fantastic year, as the company which operates across 14 African countries, generated $1.2 billion in revenue, in the first half of 2022, growing by 13% from the same period last year.

Just recently Airtel’s share price posted gains of 10% in July, becoming one of the best-performing stocks of the trading month, following positive investors’ sentiment. The positive sentiment witnessed on shares of the telecom firm during the month of July, has resulted in investors of the company gaining about N651 billion at the close of trading on July 29th.

Airtel began the year with a share price of N955 and has since gained 99.5% on that price valuation, ranking Ninth on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in terms of year-to-date performance.

Investors in the company will no doubt be overwhelmed with a feeling of ecstasy, smiling to the bank, as the company continues to perform exceptionally well since the beginning of 2022, giving investors massive returns on their investments.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that Airtel ranks as the 96th most traded stock on the Nigerian stock exchange over the past three months this year, from April 12 to July 18, 2022.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic that put a constraint on many businesses across the globe, the company has continued to remain resilient since the pandemic period, with remarkable achievements in revenue.

Airtel has traded a volume of 7.65 million shares in 2,304 deals valued at N12.4 billion over the period, with an average of 121,433 traded shares per session. A volume high of N1.38 million was achieved on May 27th, and a low of 31 on April 13th, for the same period.

Shareholders at the company have been reported to have gained about N3.571 trillion at the close of the trading period on 18th July 2022. It is interesting to note that Airtel Africa is also listed on the London exchange markets.

The company has consistently positioned itself to compete for the foreseeable future, which is why it has consistently witnessed a significant increase in its revenue and gains in its shares. Airtel has continued to hit on all cylinders, as it expanded its business, by making a significant entry into the Fintech sector.

Its entry into the Fintech space was no doubt a remarkable entry, as the company Immediately partnered with British multinational banking and financial services company, Standard Chartered Bank, to enable the telecommunications company to deepen its financial inclusion drive across key markets.

Ever since Airtel commenced its mobile money operation in Nigeria, the company has continued to witness a strong addition in its market capitalization. As of July 2022, the local stock market witnessed a 1.71 percent growth as investors showed buying interest in some companies doing remarkably well, such as GTCO, Wema Bank, other equities, and Airtel inclusive.

It was reported that traders/investors did not hesitate to pounce on the stocks of these companies, with the hope that their prices would rise in the coming weeks. As an investor looking for where to invest, Airtel might be that destination, as the company has continued to give investors a massive return on investments.
