The Portable Threat: Threat to life as a criminal offense

1

Mr. Habeeb Okikiola, the Zazu crooner, who goes by the stage name, “Portable” is fond of making uncensored and unexpurgated remarks and speeches on social media, sometimes on a serious note and sometimes as a “cruise” or joke.

He recently threatened the organizers of the headies award and his fellow nominees in the upcoming music award. In the video he posted, he stated clearly that the awards of the categories he was nominated for belong to him solely as he is a better deserving nominee and if any of the other nominees dare win the award he will have them killed and he will also kill the organizers of the award.

The Zazu crooner who penetrated the Nigerian music scene late last year and came to the limelight using his hit song “Zazu”  is fond of making similar videos like this, although it could be said to be all “cruise” and jokes but there’s a limit to cruise. Threatening someone’s life is a joke taken too far and it is treated seriously and is also a criminal offense. You don’t joke with that and even if you claim that it is a joke, the person can report to the police and if anything happens to that person you will be held responsible for it even if you have not done anything to the fellow.

A Threat to Life involves a threat to harm or cause imminent or potential harm to a person, cause serious bodily injury, or significant violent action.

Threat to life is a criminal offense provided for in S 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and it provides thus:

56 Threatening Violence.

(1) Any person who:

(a) with intent to intimidate or annoy any person, threatens to break or damage a residential house; or

(b) with intent to alarm any person in a residential house, discharge loaded firearms, or commit any other breach of the peace;

is guilty of a misdemeanor, and is liable to imprisonment for one year

By the provision of this section, a person who threatens to carry out the violence of attacking another person is guilty of a misdemeanor and can be jailed for one year.

As an individual, when you receive a threat to your life, it is in your best interest to

  1. Retain and save all Evidence that shows the threat.
  2. Report the threat to the law enforcement agencies and present the evidence.
  3. Get a Restraining Order against the person who made the threat.
  4. Pursue Criminal and/or Civil Remedies against the threat.

Portable has been asked by the organizers of the headies award to retract the threat and apologize to his fellow nominees and the organizers of the show if not his name will be taken off the nomination list and he was also reported to the police.

Samsung to Cut Phone Production by 30 Million Units This Year

0

Global economic headwinds are accelerating with impacts that are not only inducing inflation, but also are forcing companies to downsize their operations. Spiked by the Russia-Ukraine war, economies that have made progress recovering from covid strains are now facing another challenge that experts say may lead to global recession.

This means that companies must once again strategize to withstand the economic storm that has disrupted the global supply chain amid scarcity of goods and services. There is also the cautionary spending lifestyle that consumers are largely adopting to cope with the rising cost of goods and services, impacting sales, especially of tech devices.

Consequently, Samsung has become the first major company to make a significant change in its business. A report on Samsung mobile website said the company is having to adapt to these challenges as it seeks growth in the smartphone market. Citing a new report out of South Korea, which suggests that Samsung has decided to cut its phone production by 30 million units this year, the report pointed to global economic downturns forcing other companies to also follow the same path.

Global economic situation forces Samsung to make the cut

Other companies have reportedly taken similar steps in the face of this challenging economic environment. Apple is believed to have cut its smartphone production for 2022 as well. The company is reportedly cutting production of the iPhone SE by 20%.

The report mentions that Samsung is cutting production targets across its low to mid-end and flagship models. Samsung was reportedly going to produce 310 million units of smartphones in 2022 but it has now decided to cut that back to 280 million units.

The company had initially aimed to produce 300 million units in 2022 as it has yet to hit this figure after 2017. However, the global economic situation has dented demand and the company has to react.

Inflation is at its highest in key markets across the globe. This causes people to limit expenditures on items they don’t immediately need. Market analysts expect this to be a major reason why sales of affordable devices may also decline this year.

Peter Obi Joins Labour Party – But Does He Stand A Chance of Nigerian Presidency?

0

Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, who announced his resignation from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday, announced on Friday that he’s joined the Labour Party.

Obi, who was a presidential candidate under the PDP quit the party a few days to the primary that will determine the Party’s presidential flag bearer, citing “issues that are at variance” with his “persona and principles.”

The former governor who has become popular, particularly among the youths due to his issue-based campaigns, said he has chosen the Labour Party as its values align with his aspirations and mantra of making Nigeria a productive nation.

“I thank all Nigerians, especially our youths who have joined me in the mission of taking back and reuniting Nigeria. This project is yours and for the future of your children. I am just a facilitator.

“Since I resigned from the PDP because of issues that are at variance with my persona and principles, I have consulted widely with various parties and personalities to ensure we do not complicate the route to our desired destination.

“For me, the process of achieving our goal is as fundamental as what one will do thereafter.

“Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family. I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country. Be assured that I’ll never let you down,” Obi said in a statement.

Obi’s resignation from the PDP is attributed to his view against the “money bag” system that rules the primaries, where aspirants win by buying party delegates. The system gives the ticket to the highest bidder not the most qualified.

Does Obi stand a chance with the Labour Party?

While there has been unwavering support for Obi, even after his resignation from the PDP and subsequent move to Labour Party, the question remains if he stands a chance without the backing of one of the two major political parties in Nigeria which has the structure needed to win.

The Labour Party was formed in 2022 by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), but has been unable to make strides in Nigeria’s politics, winning only a few offices: Segun Mimiko who became Ondo State governor after winning a court battle, and Segun Ogunwuyi, who became the party’s only member of the Nigerian National Assembly. The party has only won 1 out of 360 seats in the House of Representatives while Mimiko remains the only governor to have emerged from the party.

Based on this pedigree, there is skepticism around Obi’s chances as a presidential candidate under the Labour Party, even though he has a throng of supporters. But following recent developments, which are believed to have exposed the rot in Nigerian political parties’ electoral process, this stirring indignation against the two major political parties, the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the PDP, many believe that Obi could disrupt the status quo.

Moreover, The National Consultative Front, the umbrella body of the ‘Third Force’ Movement and Political Alternatives to the PDP and APC, said on Sunday that it has adopted the Labour Party as the “third force’.

The NCFront said it has since commenced the fusion of its structures of over 20 million members and supporters nationwide into the Labour Party, urging Nigerians to join the movement.

“Consequently, our teeming members all over Nigeria and in Diaspora have been directed to register immediately as members of the Labour Party at all designated registration centres, both online and physically at the Ward Levels, to be able to take part in the ongoing electoral programmes of the Party for the 2023 elections,” the movement said.

With this new force behind the Labour Party, many believe that Obi will have a fighting chance at the polls if the election is free and fair.
