UK Clarifies Not Listing IPOB As A Terrorist Organization

0

After the news circulated the net that the UK government made a U-turn to recognize the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, as a terrorist organization. Just recently, the Uk government has come out to debunk such news, stating that the reports that circulated the net, stating that it has designated IPOB as a terrorist group is inaccurate and untrue.

When the false news circulated the internet, there was a statement signed by the Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu who stated that such news is a welcome decision for Nigeria, as the UK government has finally proscribed IPOB as a terrorist group.

In his words; “Nigeria welcomes the decision by the United Kingdom to prescribe the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group”.

Having heard such false reports being circulated on the net, the British high commissioner in Abuja clarified that such reporting was not the case. He however issued a public statement to clarify the whole issue.

The statement reads, “We are aware of inaccurate reporting circulating in the media and online that the UK Government has added the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the UK’s list of terrorist groups or organizations banned under UK law, these reports are untrue. The ‘Indigenous People of Biafra’ (IPOB) is not a proscribed organization in the UK.

“The inaccurate reporting relates to the 13 April 2022 publication by the UK Government of a revised Country Policy and Information note (CPIN) on separatist groups in SE Nigeria, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). CPINs provide country of origin information (COI) and analysis of COI for use by UK Government decision-makers handling particular types of protection and human rights claims.

“All asylum and human rights claims made in the UK are considered on their facts by our obligations under the UN Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights, taking into account relevant background country information and case law.

“The CPIN on separatist groups in the South East, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), provides a general assessment of risks faced by individuals belonging to those groups. These assessments are based on an analysis of publicly available country information obtained from a wide range of reliable sources including media outlets; UK and other governments; local, national, and international organizations; and non-government organizations.

“This CPIN also acknowledges that the Nigerian government has proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organization, some members of IPOB have reportedly used violence against the state and members of the public, and advises that persons who have committed human rights abuses must not be granted protection”.

It’s disappointing that the government of Nigeria is so hell-bent on peddling fake news concerning the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB about them being a terrorist organization. This is the same government that once lamented that the great challenge facing the country is the issue of fake news and misinformation, only for them to be found guilty of doing the same act.

It is obvious that whenever a report suits the agenda of the government, regardless of how false it is, they embrace it with ecstasy. Such sponsored news about IPOB was orchestrated by mischief-makers. It’s indeed commendable that the UK released a statement to clarify such false reports being circulated.

There have been statements from some Nigerians, especially those residing in the South East region of Nigeria, stating that the Violence, Murder, Arson, and the likes been perpetrated in the South East are not carried out by IPOB members, but by some unscrupulous beings hired by the government to cause chaos in the region, to do everything possible to label IPOB and its members as a terrorist organization.

A critical examination of all the chaos in the South East, it makes no sense why IPOB members will want to kill their people which makes it very hard to believe. All they seem to be demanding from the government is for them to gain their freedom.

Meanwhile, the government has refused to declare the Fulani herdsmen militia as a terrorist group, despite them being responsible for hundreds of death and the destruction of properties in the country. This is a group that was named the fourth deadliest group in the world according to the 2014 Global terrorism index.

According to the government, they disclosed that they refused to name the Fulani herdsmen as a terrorist organization because their activities were criminal and not terror-related. Interesting!

Even if the government seems to have a strong hatred towards the members of IPOB and its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, that doesn’t mean that they should go ahead to peddle false information about the group. It is a shame that they had to circulate the false news to suit their narrative.

On NNPC’s Reaction Over Resurfaced Petrol Scarcity In Abuja

0

Indications emerged Friday, 7th May 2022 that fuel queues have resurfaced in petrol stations across Abuja, the Nigeria’s capital city, with many motorists scrambling to get petroleum products.

The immediate cause of the latest queues in Abuja remains unknown as filling stations in the Wuse, Bwari and Lugbe areas of the FCT reportedly sold petrol at higher prices as against the officially stipulated price of N162.

As at Sunday morning, some filling stations situated around the metropolis were shut to buyers. For instance, Shafa filling station located opposite Optima fuel station, airport road Lugbe was shut. An official of the station revealed that they just exhausted their stock. Similarly, the NIPCO filling station along the same airport road, Lugbe, was opened but an official said the station had no petrol stock.

A long queue was seen at NNPC retail outlet central business district area and Oando in Wuse Zone 1 while Saddi Kamal, Mrs oil, Dan oil and Danmarna petroleum limited, located along Lugbe airport road, were under lock.

It could be recalled that earlier in the year, fuel scarcity hit major Nigerian cities including Abuja and Lagos as people scrambled to get petrol for their cars and their electricity generators.

In February, the Federal Government (FG) disclosed that the quantity of methanol found in imported fuel exceeded Nigeria’s specifications. The development resulted in a shortage of petrol and queues reappearing in major cities.

The crisis lingered for weeks — and in some places like Abuja, for several months — despite the FG’s report that claimed there was sufficient stock of petroleum products for distribution across the country.

Nigerians, especially in Abuja, have endured an unpredictable supply of fuel for over a year now, with filling stations operating at reduced capacity. The crisis started in 2021 after the government announced its plan to remove fuel subsidies.
Marketers, who the regulators accused of hoarding the product, have refused to resume normal operations even after the suspension of the subsidy removal plan.

As fuel queues resurfaced across parts of the capital city on Friday, many Nigerians are worried that they may have entered yet another season of suffering and lamentations usually occasioned by fuel scarcity across the country.

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has cautioned Nigerians not to engage in panic buying of petrol, saying it has enough product for the country. This was said late Sunday, 8th May 2022 via a statement released by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Garba Deen Muhammad.

The Corporation disclosed that the sudden appearance of fuel queues in parts of Abuja was due to low load-outs at depots, which usually happen during long public holidays, saying it had over of 2.5 billion litres of petrol in stock with the sufficiency of more than 43 days.

The NNPC, who imports virtually all the petrol used in Nigeria, said, “The NNPC Ltd notes the sudden appearance of fuel queues in parts of Abuja. This is very likely due to low loadouts at depots which usually happen during long public holidays; in this case, the Sallah celebrations.

“Another contributing factor to the sudden appearances of queues is the increased fuel purchases, which are also usual with returning residents of the FCT from the public holidays.

“NNPC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in conjunction with our marketing partners, have taken necessary measures to ramp up loadouts from all depots.

“We assure all residents of the FCT, and indeed all Nigerians, that we have ample local supplies and national stock in excess of 2.5 billion litres with the sufficiency of more than 43 days.

“The NNPC Ltd hereby advises motorists not to engage in panic buying as supplies are adequate and will become increasingly evident in the coming days.

I wonder how holidays could cause low load-outs at the petrol depots. There are products that shouldn’t be affected by public holidays. Just as working personnel on essential duties aren’t permitted to proceed on any holiday, such measure is required for essential products like petrol, among others.

Energy supply is the centre, or the backbone, of human daily activities, hence ought to be taken very seriously by the concerned authorities. Anything that affects the supply of petroleum products in Nigeria, would definitely affect the activity of every individual or entity resident in the country.

Hence, as the citizens clamour for construction of petroleum refineries across the country, the NNPC and its likes should expedite actions to ensure the needful is done at all times.

ManCity Takes Advantage Of Liverpool Slip-Up In The EPL

0

Manchester City who were previously leading in the English Premiership League (EPL) with just one point, followed closely by Liverpool who are currently in the second position. After the frustrating playout at Anfield that saw Liverpool held in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham, it gave Mancity the chance to increase their lead in the league, which they did.

On Sunday, Mancity didn’t fail to utilize Liverpool’s slip-up as they ruthlessly trashed Newcastle 5-0, which saw them lead the premier league table with 3 points. City has taken what could be a decisive step toward winning the EPL with only three games left.

Following their exit from the Uefa champions league, after they got eliminated in the semi-final by Real Madrid, city will not want to jinx the premier league as they seem determined to give in their best to win the league cup.

With a look at their next fixtures, one can presume that City is likely to be crowned champions in the Epl because all fixtures comprise bottom and mid-table teams, which looks like an easy cruise for them. But one thing about the game of football is that anything can happen until the final whistle has been blown. One shouldn’t write off these teams as they could pull a shocker unexpectedly.

Although, despite Liverpool’s draw with Tottenham, Jurgen Klopp’s men still have major reasons to be optimistic, because there is still a flickering chance that the EPL trophy might come their way. With just three games left before the end of the season, Liverpool will have to ensure that they win all remaining games, and possibly have to rely on city’s opponent to defeat them in any of the remaining games to keep their title hope alive.

It will likely be a difficult one, because a close observation of City’s past EPL titles, they hardly slip up when they are close to winning the title. They maintain high focus till the final match has been played or till they play their final decisive match.

City’s attitude towards the end of the season leads me to say that “when you are so close to receiving your reward, at that point, nothing can seem to distract you, as you will keep your eyes fixed on the price”. which is obviously what city has done on countless occasions to win the EPL title.

Mancity has been characterized by their relentlessness and this was evident last season as they won the league. This season, the club has played all their difficult matches, which makes the possibility high for them to win the EPL title.

Aside from Liverpool hoping that Mancity gets defeated in their remaining fixtures, they should rather focus on their remaining games, to avoid losing any match at this point, not even a draw, as such results will give city a comfortable lead to win the EPL.

No doubt the EPL matches played lately have been very intense, as a few teams are fighting to get away from the relegation zone, some other teams want to ensure they make it to the top four position, and also title contenders Liverpool and City are doing everything possible to ensure they claim the EPL title.

As it stands now, it is not yet clear which team will win the EPL title, and which team is likely to miss out on the top four position. The points are so close that no team can afford a costly slip because it will jeopardize their position. Will Mancity maintain the tempo to win the league or will there likely be a shocker before the end of the competition? Well, as it stands now, fingers are crossed till when the last match has been played.
