Conflict Management In A Workplace

It is a known fact that anywhere humans exist, conflict is bound to happen. In the workplace, employees come from different geographical locations, cultures, religions, etc, to work together, in the process also sharing ideologies/beliefs on certain issues.

The work environment usually comprises people who have a different outlook towards life and problems which makes conflict inevitable. When conflict occurs in the workplace, if not handled properly, can lead to division and lack of productivity. There are some common causes of conflict such as poor communication, Toxic Work environments, personality differences, unclear job expectations, harassment, etc.

A workplace in the first place should have already laid down rules to help prevent conflict from occurring. But in a process where conflict occurs, there are measures on how to properly handle conflict in the workplace.

  1. Clarify What Led To The Conflict: This should be the first ideal thing to do when a conflict arises in the workplace. Getting to know what led to the conflict will help to know how to resolve it. Anyone acting as a mediator in a bid to broker peace, which is usually the manager, should ensure to hear from both parties and not just a single-sided story, to avoid making rash decisions to be able to get a proper understanding of what led to the conflict. Most times, false clarification often leads to impartial/unfair judgment.
  2. Conflicting Parties Should Come Together To Settle Their Differences: Regardless of how tense the conflict is, conflicting parties should be made to come together, so they can both trash out their differences, rather than holding grudges. They should be able to state what they are not pleased with so there won’t be any repetition of such cases again. Avoiding proper conversations will only generate much hatred because the tension has not been doused. They should be able to have honest communication regarding the issue at hand.
  3. Achieving A Common Goal: After both parties have poured out their grievances, for the conflict to be properly handled, they need to come to a common objective which entails resolving the issue and how to prevent it from recurring. Parties involved need to summarize their areas of agreement, and if possible seek possible opinions from colleagues to ensure that they both agree to reach a common goal.
  4. Implement Preventive Conflict Strategy: Once a conflict has occurred, even if parties involved have settled their differences, they should never presume that the issue is resolute. Prevention strategies need to be implemented to prevent another conflict from arising. Conflicting parties need to understand what led to the initial conflict and avoid repeating such mistakes that led to the initial conflict.

Conclusion

Conflict is bound to happen where humans exist, and the workplace is not an exemption. It is how conflict is handled that matters most because a conflict not properly handled can cause division and reduce productivity in a workplace if not properly handled.

It is a big irony: the super-wealthy among us  are creating wealth at a faster rate than the overall growth rate on production costs, due to primarily marginal cost improvement, as a result of technology which continues to improve productivity across market sectors. In 2021, America’s 1% touched the sky and found more dollars. In Africa, that seems to be the same story, according to Forbes, summarized by Premium Times.

“The continent’s 18 billionaires are now worth an estimated $84.9 billion, which implies a 15 per cent increase within a year and the most since 2014 when a larger number of billionaires (28 billionaires ) were worth $96.5 billion when combined. ” 

Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote retained his trophy – richest man in Africa, 11th straight year on the go, at $13.9 billion, up from $12.1 billion in 2020. Dangote Cement remains the “osisi na-ami ego” [the tree that produces money as fruits!] in the empire.

Yet, this Forbes list  will change by 2030 as some of the digital entrepreneurs begin their ascensions.

As The Election Approaches In Nigeria

The last time I checked, even a dummy across the Nigerian State could attest to the conspicuous fact that the long awaited general elections are fast approaching.

The aforementioned situation is obvious that any living creature can easily take note of the circumstance as well as the intrigues and intricacies surrounding it. It could arguably be noticed by not just a dummy but an epileptic patient.

It suffices to assert that every right thinking Nigerian is at the moment filled with mixed feelings as regards what the outcome or endpoint of the impending exercise would entail.

Since prediction is not unconnected with mankind, in various quarters, many have already predicted who becomes the next Executive President of the country. The predictions have continued unabated that it had in some cases resulted in arguments.

Whatever the case might be, what matters most is the need for Nigerians to fully prepare their mindsets for the fast approaching events; the need for the electorate to acknowledge that the anticipated output of the elections can only come into reality if the expected input is duly tendered.

The ‘input’ as stated above is the voting aspect expected to be carried out by the prospective voters. It is only through voting the country can boast of an election results.

In other words, results cannot be manufactured by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Results, which would determine the output or outcome of the civic exercise, can only be gotten and counted if the electorate do the needful.

The needful is to ensure that they cast their votes aptly and equally ensure that the votes are duly counted by the electoral officers or collation officials assigned to their respective polling booths.

As the elections are fast approaching, I want to in my capacity as an analyst and activist deeply advise the three key actors of the political outing namely: the political parties alongside the aspirants, the electoral umpire and the electorate.

The various political parties and their awaited flag bearers must endeavour to stick to the rules at all times as they undergo the ongoing campaign process as well as at the polls.

The parties need to genuinely conscientize their teeming followers to eschew violence at all cost as they collectively throw their support for them. They must make them realize that they aren’t expected to go about posing muscles and fists to their perceived opponents. They are rather required to comport themselves in any occasion they find each other in regard to the ongoing political era.

The parties cum aspirants in their own accord are equally expected to remain civil and disciplined. They shouldn’t see the incoming contest as a ‘do or die affair’.

A good and decent politician who truly means well for the people is ready to contest for a particular position as many times as possible provided the election is free and fair. But one who doesn’t mean well for the people would want to acquire the post by all means; this practice is unequivocally an aberration.

The aspirants, therefore, must distance their mindsets from any thought concerning rigging or allied matters. They ought to solely concentrate on how to gain the people’s votes at the polls, and nothing more. Hence, they shouldn’t indulge themselves in any form of thought or action targeted to go contrary to the accepted norms or electoral rules.

The electoral umpire, INEC, on their part, must be willing to carry out their statutory obligations without violating the extant laws or Acts. Thus, its officials shouldn’t intend involving themselves in anything that has undertones of pranks or misdeed.

They must take into cognizance that the people at large coupled with various concerned entities are keenly looking up to them, hence wouldn’t welcome any excuses.

The INEC is required to be neutral, patriotic and unbiased no matter whose ox is gored. Neutral, in the sense that, they are required to be at the centre stage. One who is at the centre stage is the person who ensures that the activity in question is carried out peacefully and successfully.

Among all, one at centre-stage mediates between competing or disagreeing parties, hence is expected to ensure the contest doesn’t result in any form of crisis irrespective of the level of provocation.

Patriotic, in the sense that, they must have the interest of the country at heart. A patriotic citizen is one who loves his or her country and strongly supports the progress of such society. If you really love a certain locality, you must do everything humanly possible to encourage or promote its activities and dreams. So, the INEC is required to be patriotic at all cost.

Unbiased, in the sense that, they are meant to remain fair and truthful at all times, thus mustn’t show any act of prejudice or favouritism. The INEC is expected to be objective in its judgement over the polls. Its officials are, therefore, required to free themselves from all emotions and one-sided calculations regardless of the circumstance.

Inter alia, the electorate must be sure of what they actually want. It is only by acknowledging what they want, they can ascertain the candidate that has what it takes to do the needful. They shouldn’t allow uncalled issues to becloud their sense of reasoning.

It’s noteworthy that they are the only ones imbued with the powers to determine the outcome of the polls, hence the need to be extremely careful and mindful of their actions and inactions.

If any aspirant informed them that he or she is damn determine to fix the economy of the country, they ought to ask the person to show them the processes through which they intend fixing the economy or system. They shouldn’t depend on mere pledges; rather, ought to rely on the practical-oriented avowal that accompanies the promises.

Above all, those who are yet to register, revalidate or collect their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC), as the case may be, should do so without further ado. Like I earlier stated, only the electorate are expected to tender the input that would determine the output of the awaited elections.

So, they must note that without their PVCs, no input would be recorded at the polls, and this smacks of danger for the entire system. It’s appalling to acknowledge that thousands of PVCs are reportedly yet to be collected across the country.

All in all, every party involved, either institution or individual, shouldn’t allow frivolities to override priorities.

Nigeria Needs To Fix This Expired Legislation

“Uwa bu ahia” [the world is a market] – the Igbo Nation says. Simply, not allowing doctors, architects and lawyers to advertise, has not stopped them from having balance sheets. So, why not just liberate them?

Comment 1: We have 469 creatures that are draining our purse, some sleep and snore on duty, most waste valuable time crafting and debating how they would be shielded from their emperor-styled state governors, so that they can perpetuate their stay in the National Assembly, for no worthy reason anyway.

We have many obsolete laws, redundant and dysfunctional institutions, yet the preoccupation of those that awarded themselves ridiculous wages is how they will win elections, while the land remains paralyzed.

Since 1999, what problem have we solved using our new found democratic governance system? The khaki guys with all their flaws and corruption seemed to know how to get things done than folks elected or selected by the people, that’s a disgrace.

This is a country and people who have proven over and over that we are incapable of writing people’s constitution, rather we keep tinkering military styled constitution handed to us as though it were a commandment sent down from heaven, we are both afraid and confused in all the things that matter, and we remain fantastically shameless.

Democracy is never meant for mediocres, Nigeria is a practical example.

Comment 2: The problem is that most people in the concerned fields think very Professional. Professionals rarely challenge the status quo, it takes an Entrepreneur to do that. The Education System ensures professionals are obedient enough to not even contemplate such risks. Consequently, we’re too accepting of rubbish in this country and the politicians don’t mind pushing their luck as we grow more and more tolerant.

I expected the crypto investors whose accounts were closed by CBN to organise a Class Action and seek redress, but all we keep hearing are murmurs and lawyers, as smart as they are, can’t even find a way to seize their moment.

The restriction on ads could’ve served as an avenue for enlightened medical practitioners to create distinction against the teeming competition.

Marketing is Not Equal to Advertisement. Social Media influencing can also be an avenue to gain massive following that can be organically converted to patrons. It’s cheaper, more engaging, has higher return on investment etc, than advertising. One can only imagine what a doctor or medical organisation with 1 or 2 million followers on social media can achieve.

The problem here is not the government but the fact that we’re still largely an “Inventive Society”.
