The Tree Leader

0

‘Everything begins and ends with leadership’, John Maxwell will always say. Leadership is the energy and direction needed to change a state (not territory). Leader or follower? Most people would not choose to be followers when given the opportunity of choice for either of the two. The reason is because a leader is seen as the one with all the privileges of power, authority, and resources, and determines who gets what and when; what should or should not be done. But I bet you, if we all know the burden of leadership – pain, betrayal, self-denial, frustration, sacrifice, deprivation, and persecution – most of us would choose over and over again to be followers.

Three nights ago, there was a fracas in my neighborhood that would have ended in fatality but for our timely intervention to disarm and pacify the warring parties. Today I was invited by the Elders Council to recount as an eyewitness what led to the fight as it involved the leader of my neighbourhood and a neighbor. An aphorism in my testament caught my fancy. It goes thus, ‘A leader should be like a tree that is not easily irritated with events around it.’

A tree?! Yes. What leadership qualities can man learn from a mute and immovable plant? A lot. Beyond human models on leadership, man has long admired, conceptualized, and adopted desirable leadership characteristics of outstanding creatures like the ants, the eagle, and the lion to name a few but rarely on plants.

Trees are all around us and have been resourceful to man and animals alike. But aside the benefits we draw from them, have we ever taken time to see the leader in them? I have.

As human leaders we try to be as organized and industrious like ants; visionary, fearless, tenacious, nurturing of the young, and high flying like an eagle; and brave, protective, willing to fight, hunt, loners like a lion. But we seldom wish to adopt the traits of a tree such as being slow to anger, stability, availability, having zero bias, and generosity.

Whenever I am outdoors, I indulge in watching the activities of creatures around the Neem trees (Dongoyaro trees) in the middle of my street, it always fascinates me. I notice how a variety of bird species come in the day to feed on its figs and tweet to themselves on the branches. At night, bats are the guests, and like their diurnal cousins, they draw nourishment from the fruits. With the arrival of a different season, another species come to life. Man too is not left out in enjoying the generosity of the trees by taking refuge from the malicious sun.

But for a tree to be able to accommodate and refresh all of these creatures, there are obvious costs. I have been able to identify three of them.

Cleaning Up the Mess Alone

A tree is always messed up by lots of bird sh*t and abandoned nets. The culprits always never bother to clean up or show appreciation. In the work of a leader, mess are certain. They come in various ways of scandals, inefficiencies, failure, betrayal, and disappointment by the team members and the external environment. The leader in this case may lose his cool if he has anger issues, but the Tree Leader will always keep his stables clean.

Unfriendly Weather

The habitat of a tree predisposes it to severe environmental vagaries in different seasons. Unfriendly weather elements of heat and wildfire, rain and storm, cyclone, tremor, etc all come to test the character of the tree. The Tree Leader is able to navigate through all the challenges that come its way. An eagle may avoid storms, floods, and fire by soaring above them, a lion would take refuge by climbing a tree, but a tree must go through them to come out better.

Underappreciated

Just as humans take the resources of a tree for granted, a leader is often underappreciated for his sacrifices, but this should not bother him if he has the quality of a tree leader. As a tree surrenders itself to be used by all until he is spent, so also, a leader is expected to ‘die a little’ everyday for others to live.

Conclusion

In conclusion, as leaders, John Maxwell would want us to have 360 degree influence. Bishop T.D. Jakes would want us to mount on eagle’s wings and soar. Myles Munroe would want us to have the attitude of a lion, and I, not in any way equating myself to these greats, would want us to have the leadership spirit of a tree by having natural love for all kinds of people. The tree leader complements other forms of leadership attitudes. It does not attack like the lion and the eagle but provides protection and provisions to all without a grudge.

Medcera: A Call For National Adoption

1

I was at the hospital recently and my eyes went stern when I saw the doctor writing in a typical ‘Nigerian’ doctor way; difficult to read, fast, and technical. As she was writing and questioning me, another part of my head was thinking about the number of doctors I have met at different hospitals since adulthood, which invariably mean how many hospitals that I have the fragments of my medical records. At that point, the question running in my head was “why aren’t we as a country adopting the innovative Medcera yet.”

Once in my medical history, I was given an antibiotic which my body reacted to. I was admitted in the hospital for 3 days to recover from the negative reaction. You know what, only one hospital in Nigeria has a record of me reacting to the particular drug. In effect, if I move to another hospital, I risk the danger of being given the same antibiotic except I know the drug myself and can recollect the name. Now I’m thinking within me, but Medcera is a free platform that aims to democratize health record per user across verticals.

Thinking back on my adulthood, I can say without thinking twice about four hospitals where I have my medical records, all driven by the different location where I have domiciled at one time or the other. My data, medical data, scattered around different databases. It means there is no way any new hospital that I visit today can access my medical history beyond what I can narrate. That is a great concern that needs a quick fix. Medcera was designed for this purpose.

I reckon that my story will be like that of an average Nigerian and if I’m to stretch it, an average African. If so, then I believe we should as a country and continent immediately declare a state of emergency on how we store our medical record.

The challenge here is that, just like any other endeavor, knowing history is poignant to shaping the future. Knowing your medical history will help your doctor to appropriately advise you on the state of your health even if it is her/his first time of meeting you. Imagine my case where I reacted to an antibiotic, if I can’t remember the antibiotic, another doctor might just recommend it to me again. You see, as Nigerians/Africans we run at risk of a lot medically.

What is Medcera?

Medcera provides the possibility of maintaining one version of health record for a patient irrespective of the number of doctors, clinics, labs, imaging centers, etc involved. And this is unconstrained by location. Provided the patient and the providers are on Medcera, the patient’s medical record will be current as he/she moves across Africa, from clinic to clinic. The patient is completely in charge: he/she can revoke access to a provider at any time. And no one can see patient data unless he/she shares the Medcera Code.

Exactly the solution that addresses my needs and your need you exclaimed! Well yes, we have a solution already and that’s why I’m calling for its adoption nationally.

I want my medical record captured electronically, don’t you as well? Then make a call for it from your end as well.

Ndubuisi Ekekwe is the founder of Medcera, in one of his articles, he outlined a fine feature of Medcera and enumerated its vision:

“Walk into a clinic,” he said, “which is within Medcera network, give them your Medcera code, they will not need to ask you medical historical questions because Medcera has your medical summary which our AI pulls from your hospital encounters, lab data, imaging results and more.”

“What’s more; you can manage your prescriptions and practically anything including paying your doctor, pharmacies, etc. Our vision is to remove medical errors, save costs and bring higher quality in patients’ outcomes.”

I think you will agree with me already that Medcera should be adopted nationally and a state of emergency needs to be declared on how we store our medical records.

A Message to Nigerians

0

Dear Nigerians,

It is heartwarming to see the rise of Nigerians across many spheres defending the good that actually exists and voicing out against categorizing a whole nation in a negative light, and calling against the flood of corruption and fraud based cases associated with the people of the nation. For one thing, I believe Nigeria has been a country that has been greatly open to criticism more than any other country in past years. We have not only accepted criticism on many issues but we have in some quarters showed that we have many who are willing to change the narrative through their exploits and accomplishments all over the world.

Unfortunately, the media has been designed all over the world to focus on negative news and not positive news as such we seem not to be moving very far even though we are making some efforts individually. With that said, it is true to a large extent that we are the only ones who can broadcast our own accomplishments in this new age marked with competition by countries to promote themselves as the best place to live. The fact still remains that we won’t be given a break to show our good side if we do not grab it by the horns and blow our own trumpets. As much as there is much truth about the rise in cybercrime, no tribe, culture, nationality or people deserves to be tagged with a single story.

Tribalism

The issue of tribe and geographical location being prevalent for cybercrime and fraudulent tendencies cannot be denied, yet it is important for the world to know that no culture in Nigeria promotes theft and crime if followed religiously, it rather is being promoted as a new way of living and making success as seen in many parts of the world. The impatient demand for improvement in Nigeria, has seen some geographical locations experienced an increase in good lifestyle, making way for get rich quick schemes and shortcuts to success that have promoted negative output going forward. From my point of view, no tribe is safe from the inhumane and saddening treatment to be given to any individual with a Nigerian heritage when you leave the shores of the country. Simply put either you are Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba at the point you cross borders you become a Nigerian. So for wisdom sake we should all advice our folk and countrymen equally.

Media and Music

As the Nigerian music industry has witnessed massive success in the years since the early 2000s the rise in cybercrime has also increased. Is there a correlation between them; Yes, a massive correlation. I strongly advise NBC to make a call for all stakeholders in the music and entertainment industry on the type of content and messages passed across in their songs and on their platforms, government at all levels should and must also use these music and entertainment influencers to begin passing branding messages about the way to succeed as a Nigerian. As many will agree with me that the majority of Nigerian youths involved in cybercrime are influenced in their lifestyle by the music of artists and those in the entertainment industry.

Shooting music videos showing the use of expensive items of which are rented and leased, as well as lyrics on easy ways to succeed in these songs has created a trend of must have at any cost. Even the greats such as Fela, Onyeka Onwenu, and a host of others who crossed boundaries with their music showed us that the key thing about music is the right message. Anyone who remembers will know that the goal of cybercrime is to live like those that they see on Television, the internet and other media outlets. The question to be asked is if the success of the music and entertainment should be to the detriment of our moral standards for generations to come. History has never been really kind to the Nigerian story, yet history shows that we are a nation that forgets to teach upcoming generations the true lessons that made great man rise across all tribes of the nation.

A case of Unemployment

As much as many world claim that lack of jobs is a significant reason for the increase in cybercrime I beg to differ, I strongly believe that increased sets of individuals going into cybercrime in Nigeria are fueled by greedy ambitions and peer pressure as well as a case of what they are daily exposed to in the media. I personally do not advice any youth in Nigeria to be an early morning listener and reader of news flowing across the country, as that in itself is enough to cause depressing thoughts that lead to negative choices on the way of making a success in life. That said, I hope the media and newspapers around the country can focus on more positive things to present on a daily basis, rather than fuel a generation of frustrated and desperate youths with more depressing tales.

Television and Radio stations and Media

Weekly programs on many television and radio stations geared at re-educating the population on the consequences and repercussions of involving themselves in fraudulent activities must now be the norm. The examples of those who have been caught being used as deterrents to those aspiring to be involved in the crime. Private and public media houses have a critical role to play in pushing this message across. Simply put, all our futures depend on what our ears and eyes feed on daily.

Universities and higher institutions

It is important to note that a lot of cybercrime is committed by students in higher level institutions in universities across the country. Today it has become very easy for a college student to get into Fraudulent activities, as they have access to laptops, internet and electricity in one form or the other; also the situation is fueled even more by the incessant strikes embarked on almost yearly by staff and associations in the Nigerian university system. While I respect the desire of the university unions to force the government to listen to their pleas and need for development. What i would like to recommend to Nigerian university associations and unions is to think of more intelligent ways of solving problems in the university system without resulting to strike.

Federal government

Security parastatals must have Partnership with social media companies to have access to suspected profiles of those with flamboyant lifestyles and showoffs. There should also be a 24/7 hotline/ website for those in foreign countries who can confirm the identity of Nigerians through their NIMC or voters card. Solutions can also be fast tracked by implementation of New Cybercrime policies established alongside consultation of the judicial system to meet today’s standards and pass fair punishments. A further solution to cybercrime is to ensure that the repercussions are concise, clearly stated and continually broadcast across all media channels. Through CBN, policies that warrant banks and financial institutions both local and international to compare account holder’s transactions declared sources of income should be flagged and reported to security agencies when suspected. The introduction of new policies to check cybercrime based on inputs of all bodies and stakeholders in the nation should commence across the 36 states of the federation. Fraud and cybercrime should be punishable at local government, state and federal levels, meaning a perpetrator duly convicted understands, there are many jury’s awaiting you.

Religious institutions

It is not surprising that many cases of fraudulent activities and their perpetrators are people who visit religious centers, it is not news that many of them are the biggest givers of monetary gifts and are respected by religious clergy across the nation. The failings of the country in moral standards unfortunately can be linked to our religious ideals, as some leaders have failed to instill moral knowledge on their congregation, meaning the inherent moral needs of members of the congregations are not being addressed properly. Many flamboyant celebrations are being organized display of artificial wealth at many religious centers. Many Prayers are more focused on becoming overnight successes with some not even engaged in any form of meaningful job or business venture. Members are requested to make donations without asking questions of their sources of income, while many of these members are being treated with extra attention and wealth in their religious settings, while all these happens around young men who have been told to work hard to attain such levels and yet, they do not have knowledge of the source of such wealth. Dear Clergy, as much as possible, focus efforts on promoting right living and working hard as these are the basis of Godly doctrines. Treating individuals differently on the basis of their monetary input and influence sends a negative idea to the youth.

Parents

If any country requires parents to be re-educated on the concepts of moral standards and honest living, Nigeria should be on the list. My finger has always pointed to ‘parents’ and ‘guardians’ on the need to exercise restraints on the amount of pressure they place on their wards. Some parents till date believe that only Medicine, law and engineering if studied in university can lead to success which is covered by their need to satisfy their own greed. Many parents see a university education as the only means of success of their child, not considering hidden talents their children possess, in such situations such children are bound to feel pressured from not doing what brings them satisfaction and opting for the choice of parents where in which they fail to be inspired and either opt for either suicide, crime, or resilience, of which resilience is hardest to chase. Parents through their work place and religious institutions should be admonished on a regular basis with the need to build strong moral standards in their children. There should be avenues made in higher institutions that teach moral education both private and publicly. This may be hard when looked at, but I am sure it will play a significant role in ensuring that parents are passing the right message across to their children.

Lifestyle

If you want to enjoy a party for free, attend one organized in Nigeria. The weekly burial and weddings that goes on across the country is a testament to the amount of wealth that Nigeria loses through events and parties. The youths looking to start life early in the aspect of marriage are slowed down by the monetary demands and requirements needed to organize weddings. The rise in social status and demands of wedding activities has caused many youths to do anything possible to make it just to have a wedding that shows high levels of wealth. The outcome of this is not far from the increase in cybercrime prevalent in the economy. As much as possible we should all pass the message across that weddings can be done with the basic necessities met and nothing more. Unnecessary increase in Dowries and payments should not deter young men and women of marriageable age from marrying their choice.

Nigerian Diaspora

Endeavor to make those back here understand that living in a country outside Nigeria does not equate to success overnight but hard work. In coming back to the country, ensure that the flamboyant life which you cannot display in foreign nations is not displayed when you come here which only causes misleading ideas and notions in the minds of our youths. We admonish you to be frank with your Nigerian relations on the hard work it takes to succeed honestly in any country of the world. And we beg you finally to be shining examples of hard work, perseverance, honesty and happiness that was once attributed to Nigerians in times past. You are our light over there and the first impression the world has of who a Nigerian can be.

Rest of the world

Dear foreigners, we may not be the best country with the highest rate of integrity and honesty. We do not claim to be corruption free or shy away from the fact that we need time to make amends. But for those Nigerians living in foreign lands with you, we ask that you do not allow the sickness of a single story to show human love and respect to those Nigerians and any nationality who has never done anything worth being afraid of.  We ask that you look at us as humans first before tagging us with a title that is not dependent on race, tribe, social class or nationality. We ask that you report through your media outlets with a focus on the names of people and not their nationality as focusing on a nationality not only makes life harder for others of good intent, but can also put the lives of many in danger who live in your country, as they are then targeted unduly. Nigerians are proud of their heritage and even though they have suffered a lot in the hands of bad leaders, they have and always will be capable of great things.

Summary

Einstein said it is insanity to keep doing keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. This I am afraid is the story we keep replaying when we fail to question our way of life. The greed by some Nigerians leading to cybercrime is fueled by many factors, which cannot be fully be thrashed in any single discussion, but there are a few which I have mentioned that play the most significant role in this affair.

These factors mentioned may not be directly responsible for where we find ourselves, but collective input from each and every one of them has fueled a negative story no Nigerian may be ready for in coming years. We may not have a new story, this year, or next, or even in the next two years, yet if we take little steps, we can have a testimony in the next ten years. For  those doing good, keep doing, for those working hard every day, keep working, and know that there is pride in honest living.

God bless the Citizens of Nigeria, the Leaders of Nigeria, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Your Nigerian,

Makinmodun Muyiwa

The Magic Behind Studying

0

The life of a student is quite an interesting one, one every individual should experience at a certain age. Though complicated, with a lot of stories, different stories from different individuals.  Most of the young people who begin school life at a tender age, especially rich or financial buoyant people who have not for once stayed away from home may have a hard time learning to live on their own. The middle class is of no exemption. Most of the time, the University serves as an escape route for some persons who in one way or the other is experiencing some difficulties at home.

The willingness to learn now depends on individual’s personal determination.

I gained admission in quite a miraculous way, quite miraculous because it was sudden, was a divine favour; more like I just imagined myself gaining admission to study, and then  put in some energy and it just came. Finances came as well, but that’s a story for another day. So what followed after the admission and settling down in school environment, was a time of living “my dream”, well, in a way; I had no worries, I did whatever I wanted, hung out with friends, attended classes, made a lot of friends, because one of the advantages of a school life is the luxury of time that comes with it, you tend to do whatever you want until you get carried away. sitting with friends at the back of the class and  making jests of nothing and everything was the trend, we were easily referred to as back benchers. I read less and interacted more. But then, at the end of each semester, my grades returned my jests back to my face with ugly grades. The grades were absolutely nothing to write home about. Session ended and the Cumulative Grade Point Average was not even enough to help sustain the Scholarship I was awarded while in first year. Finally it dawned on me that I needed to change my ways. However, despite the fact that I had resorted to changing, my turning point didn’t come, until my third year.

The day of reckoning came, on my way to class one faithful day. I saw a banner at a corner, the banner was about a church event. Looking closer I could see the bold written title, “Anointing to sit down and Read”! Anointing to what?? I stopped right there. In a way, this would have turned out funny to me because it appeared just like any of those awkward papers people upload in their Whatsapp status to amuse contacts. But, this didn’t amuse me; rather it sparked a deep sense of curiosity. I can pray to God to give me the ability to sit down and read?  This was a puzzle. Still puzzled I could recall a verse of the bible from proverbs 13:4 which says “a sluggard appetite is never filled, but the desire of the diligent are fully satisfied” so God supports hard work too, and if one should seek strength from him, surely he will provide. Not ever had I imagined this. More often have we heard of people praying to God that He should reveal to them what to read, or even reveal to them the answers to the questions on the day of the exam but, no one I knew before now ever prayed for this particular point I’m looking at. So I made up my mind, this is the way to go. I need this sort of anointing, I need to sit down and read, and yes I do! I need to be free from all feelings of distraction, I need to read!

From that day onward, everything changed, all of my time had been put in a divine schedule. I became better than before, a better version of myself. I eventually found myself in the circle of those who were having the top results in the class,  and at the end of my fourth year, I was only a few points short of a first class for that singular year, I had found a break. You can find yours too.! All you need to do is to take a closer look at the following:

  • Choose your friends wisely.

The first thing that should attract you to choosing a friend is their appearance, afterwards, the words that comes out of their mouth. Because out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Mingle with like minds, in all honesty, mingle with people who are better than you that will always challenge you to do better. Friends who want to have good grades, not the ones that will settle for anything.

  • Have a daily schedule.

Yes, this looks strange and outdated but it’s actually not. One has to be organized as effectively as possible, because not everyone will have that turning point, not everyone will experience that magic, the honest truth is, there isn’t any magic to it.  Discipline yourself.

  • Know your Productive time.

While in school I had a problem. It was almost impossible for me to read all night. It was quite easy for a lot of people to do, but for me, it was rocket science! I made up my mind to utilize the day. Used the library during the day, then go night reading between 7pm and 12am, then go to my darling bed. Days I tried reading all night, I will wake to forget everything I read and also have a wasted and restive day. So in order words, stick to the time that works for you. If you cannot read at night, create a time to study effectively during the day or better still during that particular time that works for you.

  • Eat well.

Yes, the brain needs food. Eat well, take out time to cook and eat a balanced diet, take fruits at intervals and don’t forget that cooking saves you a lot more money than eating out. “My dear, chop o, food is good o”

  • Pray always.

A lot of factors may never allow your hard work to yield good fruit. So you must walk with God. Join a good religious body, stay active.

Things may be complicated for any student, but one must understand that he is the architect of his own success. If you don’t study as a student, you may never get good grades, no matter what you try. So sit up, do your best , study hard because there is no magic to studying, none at all. It all depends on how disciplined you are, it depends on you! I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

Start Thinking You’re Responsible

0

Many times than few, candidates express fear and desperation owing to pressing needs on all sides. This mien takes the toll on them and makes them grind at the mill of unproductivity in cycles without pay. The deadliest part is still that they keep seeing others as responsible for their loss.

This post is two-pronged: a thank you to all those who have directly or indirectly impacted in to me the values that form the me that writes, and a brotherly and loving advice to those who mistakenly or deliberately think that others are responsible for their failures or misfortune.

Sometime ago, I lived in a wonderland. A land where you lived on promises from people that never got fulfilled. I kept on believing thinking it was faith…that wasn’t faith but foolishness. Subsidising my laziness by outsourcing my responsibility of becoming better and value FULL and ABLE, I built transient shock absorbers of small successes that fetched small cash that barely sustained me. As a young unmarried man, I thought that was a better life – making some few thousands and not thinking of how those few thousands could become more thousands and make some more thousands so I can also be a channel for others to make more money, and live a better life.

It was more recently that I realised the failed promises were never the fault or making of those who made them. It was mine. Fully mine!

As long as we feel anyone owes us anything, we will continue in our irresponsibility. It was after I started taking responsibility for my thoughts, decisions and actions that I started appreciating the lessons all the kind people have always invested their time teaching me.

In life, I have come to realise that to become the best you can be, expect the least from people. Even when you know that something will come from anyone around you, yet prepare for the worst. Why? Each time you prepare for a NO, when you build a mechanism that caters for the otherwise…’The What Ifs’, a yes will never surprise you! That’s why you will hear someone say that a future you prepare for will never surprise you!

If you’re looking forward to having or in need of better opportunities like me, do well to leave your frustrations at home, in fact flush it away in your WC and never look for it again. Take the right attitude because frustration is the only currency that buys you desperation and continuously opens you a spreadsheet of  increasingly negative purchasing power.

Seek until you find the discipline to channel your energy on one focus area at each phase or stage of your career or life. This was a major challenge in my career growth as many or some of you might identify with or perhaps have experienced. This is usually common with individuals who have the tendency of thinking they are multi-talented, multi-passionate like me. Before I call myself multi-talented, I must first have made meaning of one talent so that the other(s) take definition from the meaning of the first. Without this, confusion will surely creep in and not to far from confusion is it’s senior partner, frustration.

Doing many things at the same time is doing nothing all of those times.

I received one message advice – the same message – from more than one person at different places and times in past which still rings a bell in my head and helps me focus:

‘Taofik, you are a brilliant guy, you have the potential to succeed but you can’t do too many things at the same time. You’ll stretch yourself thin. Decide on what to do, focus on it and give it time.’

I am also offering this advice to every young person thinking many things can be done at the same time and at the same breath of strength and resources. If you think it’s possible, well I agree, but remember, excellence can not be achieved at the same time in many things.
