Are Your Eggs Selling?

9

I just got to realize why most start-ups fail. They are in a rush to always get funding. Most founders do not spend time on testing, and hardly deepen insights on the business. Most things are in their heads, and most of the followers (workers) do not even know where the founders are going.

Yet, the founders want to get funds, they want to get millions of dollars, and they want to be the next Facebook.

For me, every stage of my idea has been tested and we know the next phase. I actually had my road-map and followed it from day 1; I have not deviated. I only cancelled out approaches that didn’t work but I’m still on track. Mind you, lots of approaches wouldn’t work as you keep iterating.

If you know the number of hours and blood that I have spent in research, you will understand the challenge. I must know my potential customers like the back of my palm. For this mission, I have spent over  one year doing that.

My team members see this, they have also said this and this wouldn’t work, and this and this will work. The biggest mistake in my entrepreneurial journey was to think I’d make it quick. That I’d make millions of dollars after 6 months! I was so naive on entrepreneurship.

Now, I know entrepreneurship, I know how I can sail on the murky waters especially when you’re trying to solve a problem that has been in existence for long. You need to be careful.

I have seen many start-ups come up with businesses that I try to imagine how the founders hope to make profits on them. I mean some of the ideas can never scale even under the sea!

I reached out a Kenyan entrepreneur after I felt I had all my data gathered together and the business plan solid. I needed him to come on-board as an investor. He said the idea was awesome and he would love to invest. So he asked a question that changed my life

“Is this business running already?”

“This is the exact reason I approached you”, I thought in my mind. I need you to invest in this idea and let’s make this work; I’ve got all it takes.

He said; “I love your idea, it’s cool but sorry, I invest in running businesses”. That was a blow, I mean a slap on my almost a year idea planning, but I learnt something. I knew I was in for it; yes, it was time to face the running part. I need to make it running. But how?

How do I run without funds? When I mean funds, I’m talking about huge sum of money.

Another marathon of planning began, we must run this, we need very big money, and we need very big money. How do I get?

So I started pushing it. Mapped out the parts that will not require huge money; I will recommend the book Lean Startup.

This has taught me that it’s possible to test my idea step by step and not necessarily spend so much at once. This book pushed me to start staying awake at nights to plan and execute.

The eggs

Yes, nobody told me to start making classrooms my night house. I know I have reached a stage where I needed to test for something

Entrepreneurship is a lonely road. It doesn’t necessarily  have to be this difficult though.

I was still testing the experiment for weeks till I watched another video that finally cracked the code.

The entrepreneur said; “If you cannot sell eggs to raise funds, then nobody should invest in you to start poultry”

That was all I needed. I needed to sell eggs. That means a part of my idea needs to be running and bringing money. Yes, I must be able to generate money one way or the other.

Simply, are your eggs selling? If not, it would be hard to get funds for that poultry business plan. Sure, not many poultry businesses in Nigeria focus on selling the meat – nonetheless, the eggs remain the business.

The Case for Bioenergy in Nigeria

0

By Colif Isabor

My name is Colif Isabor, I am a Nigerian, I am a renewable energy entrepreneur, promoting the use of biomass for power generation and the production of biofuels and biochemical. I am a Cohort of The Tony Elumelu, Entrepreneurship Program 2015 pioneer class. I collocate in Lagos and Ondo State, Nigeria. Lagos the commercial capital of Nigeria, Ondo a major forestry State in Nigeria.

It has been stated and sometimes asserted that Nigeria has the capacity to lead Africa in almost every ramification of life, being as it is the most populous black nation in the World.

With this in mind, it is pertinent that Nigeria must play a leading role in the adoption of Bioenergy as the viable option in an emerging renewable energy mix to align the continent with the ambitious goal of the United Nations in reducing the carbon footprint of the universe. By this suggestion, I am not in any way putting down the other sources of renewable energy such as Solar, Wind (onshore, offshore) Geothermal, Tidal and Hydro.

Bioenergy is one of many diverse resources available to help meet our demand for energy. It is a form of renewable energy that is derived from recently living organic materials known as biomass, which can be used to produce transportation fuels, heat, electricity, and products.

The major concern is the fact that Africa, particularly Nigeria, has not really experienced a profound industrial revolution. This continent must experience industrial revolution to lay the solid foundation for the manufacturing sector. We must move from consumer of imported goods to a major exporter of processed goods. Almost every developed country in the World is taking advantage of Africa. How do we overcome this lapse with unreliable national power grid? Nigeria’s power problem is a national embarrassment. The manufacturers in Nigeria are very frustrated over the issue of power.

Bioenergy – yes, biomass is most viable option that Nigeria must adopt to overcome power shortage quickly.

Nigeria, should follow in the footsteps of Europe, in developing and depending on bioenergy.

The European Union is very bold and ambitious in its adoption of the use of bioenergy. In the last decade, the EU uses bioenergy solely for all its energy need for 41 days, from November 21st to the end of the year. It has become an annual event called ‘The European Bioenergy Day’ campaign, powered by the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM), European Pellet Council (EPC), and the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC). Also, it is relayed across Europe by all the partners that are convinced that Bioenergy is more than a renewable energy source but also the reliable path Europe should take to achieve its energy transition in the shortest span of time.

I spoke about the consequences for Africa lagging behind in the energy transition and the fight against climate change, during a recent radio interview in Lagos, Nigeria. If we do nothing or very little to adopt renewable energy, while Europe and the rest of the World, especially Europe, is racing to meet set targets for CO2 reductions, Africa will be put under pressure, and may be faced with sanctions in the future.

I will quickly list some of the advantages of bioenergy below.

Economic: Provides affordable energy, strengthens industry competitiveness, drives innovation and supports new investments.

Local and Social: Increases the standard of living, revitalizes rural areas, reduces energy bills for households, drives job creation in rural areas.

Environmental: Reduces GHG emissions, facilitates forest management, valorizes by-products and residues, and restores degraded agricultural lands.

Greener Energy: Reduces dependence from fossil fuel, reduces imports from third countries, consolidates renewable energy consumption, and decarbonizes the energy sector.

Amongst the renewable energy options, bioenergy has the unique potential to deliver significant benefits to society and the environment.

Bioenergy is one of the most affordable renewable energy technologies. It is available in solid, liquid and gaseous forms and can be used for power, heating and transport. Sources of bioenergy are plentiful and can bring wealth and jobs to rural areas across the world and enable profit to be derived from marginal land.

Bioenergy projects can create markets for low-value round-wood and residues and therefore reduce waste. Bioenergy fuels are indispensable in that they can be easily stored so when demand is high they can be mobilized as soon as they are required. As a result of all this, bioenergy can meet needs not readily met by other renewables and provide grid stability on cloudy or windless days.

In Nigeria, we are happy to note that a cement manufacturing company is taking advantage of the viability and cheapness of biomass to power their factory.

My company C-Freedom Assets Management Limited, is actualizing the building of a biomass feedstock and fuel processing factory, (Energy Pellets & Biomass IndustryFZE) here in Lagos, Nigeria. Collaborating with the World leaders in biomass power generation, we are in a position to offer expert consultation to Manufacturing companies, Big hospitals, Universities, Communities, Airports, Stadium, State governments, Farm estates, that are interested in generating their own power as a standalone, mini grid, or micro grid system.

Grand Opening Ceremony of SPE Int’l Conference – My Talk Title is “The Abundance in Data”

0

Before the highest leaders in Nigeria’s petroleum industry and their peers from U.S., Saudi Arabia, UK, and the world, I will speak during the Grand Opening Ceremony of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) international conference in Eko Hotels Lagos next month. My talk is titled “The Abundance in Data”.

Because “every Nigerian is a member of SPE and a petroleum engineer “(lol), unlocking that data in those oil wells and fuel stations will mean unlocking shared prosperity and better destinies for men and women. Yes, as University of Nigeria Nsukka put it, peerlessly, “to restore the dignity of man” (and woman).

That data is the element to see that dignity. The AI, the ML and business models are going to be engines to drive the efficiencies for ALL to rise! Unbounded and unconstrained power of Data will reduce business frictions and also the frictions on the wellbeing of the citizens.

It will be a good one.

Tips On Looking After Your Taxes Throughout The Year

0

By Shoaib Aslam

What is that one thing that makes your head spin round and round? For me, it is that time of the year when I must file my annual tax returns. I consider it to be a dull, monotonous, and an extremely tedious task. It sucks, doesn’t it?

I am sure most of the people are in a similar boat. Data collected at the beginning of 2019 revealed that almost half of the taxpayers had not submitted their Self-Assessment. Most of them did not file on them and are likely to be fined. This confirms that filing annual tax returns is considered such a mundane task that most people delay doing it to the point when it becomes absolutely necessary to do so.

Fortunately, there is a way out of this misery. That is, looking after your taxes throughout the year. I have penned down several ways to do so below.

DOCUMENT THE INFORMATION AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT

It can basically be considered the first step in the right direction. One of the possible ways in which you can stop lazing around is by noting down the tax information as soon as you receive it. It is absolutely essential to do so because once a lot of information has been gathered, it becomes a tedious task to organize and enter it. Also, people like me who have poor memory tend to forget undocumented things easily.

You should know well enough what information needs to be documented. This can easily be found out by doing a bit of research. There is some crucial information that each and every taxpayer needs to enter. However, some taxpayers might be asked to provide some additional information depending on their circumstances.

INPUT THE INFORMATION ON-THE-GO

Most people wait to get back home to enter any information they have received for the Self-Assessment on-the-go. It is wrong to wait to enter information until you are in front of a computer screen. Instead, you should enter information from wherever you are.

Fantastic tax software allows you to do so. Using this software, you can enter the data no matter where you are and what you are doing. This makes you more efficient, and you do not get the chance to laze around.

KEEP YOUR NECESSARY DOCUMENTS AND FILES SAFE

No matter what way you adopt of submitting data, do keep the relevant records. People are often confused regarding how long they should retain their tax record. You can refer to HMRC to find guidance regarding this.

It is advised that you keep your accounts for at least 22 months for the relevant tax year. This requirement only holds true for those who are not self-employed and file their taxes on time. However, those who do not file their taxes on time need to keep hold of their necessary documents for a little longer.

Those who are self-employed should retain their accounts for at least five years after the specified tax return deadline.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN EVEN EASIER WAY OUT?

Even though I can personally vouch that if you follow all the guidelines mentioned above you can make this tedious process of tax filing at least a bit easier, there is an even easier and efficient way out.

That is to seek tax advice from a consultancy that specializes in providing business and tax advice services. These entities know the tax system inside out and way better than any of us do.

Hence, if you wish to get rid of your tax filing woes forever, contact any reliable tax advisory consultancy now!

How to love yourself and why it is very important

2

By Adaku Efuribe

‘Give yourself permission to take care of your own needs first. This is a critical skill that many people – women especially – tend to feel guilty about. If this is you, repeat after me: “It is not selfish to take care of myself.” If you become weak or volatile from lack of self-care, you are all but useless to others’. Christine Carter

To function as an ‘emotionally balanced’ individual, we all need to ‘love our neighbours as our self’. It’s a well-known fact that we cannot give what we don’t have.

If you don’t have love inside of you, you cannot show love to others.

Loving yourself would help you develop high emotional intelligence to withstand every form of adversity, difficult moments and bad behavioural attitudes that come your way.

What does ‘loving yourself’ entail?

For starters, get enough sleep (6-8 hours a day). It’s harder to regulate your emotions when you’re tired. In addition, don’t skip meals. Research shows that keeping your blood sugar stable will make you less aggressive if you get angry. And always remember to take a moment to leave a toxic environment, if possible, and breathe deeply if you find yourself in a particularly difficult situation.

  • Do not neglect your body, soul and spirit.
  • Feed your Mind with good thoughts
  • Feed your body with nutritious food
  • Feed your soul with all things good and worthy
  • Exercise to keep your body healthy and in good shape

Our minds work like computers, what you put in is what you bring out; garbage in garbage out.

What do you constantly feed your mind with, are they worthy things? Do you dwell more on negatives? You ought to take out time to count your blessings and avoid fixing your mind on negativity all the time. Your thoughts become actions and your actions will in turn become habits.

How do you control your emotions?

To build up emotional intelligence, avoid associating yourself with toxic environments or people, who constantly drain your energy?

Spend less time with individuals who constantly bring you down or discourage you. Even if being in their midst is inevitable, try as much as possible to limit the time you spend with such people and do not taken them seriously.

Warren Buffet captures the essence of being in charge of your emotions in this quote;

‘You will continue to suffer if you have an emotional reaction to everything that is said to you. True power is sitting back and observing things with logic. True power is restraint. If words control you that means everyone else can control you, Breathe and allow things pass’

Sometimes it feels as though practicing emotional intelligence is for certain people and you think because of your temperament you cannot do it, you have to burst out in anger and respond to ‘every dog that barks at you’.

Although some people tend to have a calm demeanour, or they inherited their temperament from their parents, you can still build your character and decide on how to respond to situations or harsh words said to you.

You need to understand that someone who is a bully has issues and you on the receiving end must quickly calculate how to respond and not react.

Sometimes silence is golden, this may work in certain situations and not work in other situations. The tone of the voice is a very powerful tool in any situation; if someone is shouting or speaking to you with an angry tone, you can make up your mind to respond with kind words.

This is very difficult to do, but the joy that comes with you restraining your self is far much better than the stress that comes with you responding in anger. Words spoken in anger cannot be retrieved, walk away if you can or say nothing.

Always assess every environment to know whether it is safe, you need to be self-aware and know when someone’s action could cause an anger outburst from you. One practical way to control your anger emotions before it springs out of control is to Inhale deeply and exhale slowly as this helps to reduce tension.

Leave the toxic environment and stay alone for some time, this gives you more time to handle the situation and think about your next line of action.

As we mature in age, one thing we must take very seriously is being in control of our emotions, when we are in control, we can live healthier happier lives.

Live in the present: Breathe, Laugh, Believe

A story was told about a successful woman, when asked to share her secret of success.

She smiled and said

‘I started succeeding when I started leaving small fights for small fighters. I stopped fighting those who gossiped about me… I stopped fighting with my in laws…I stopped fighting for attention…I stopped fighting to meet public expectation of me…I stopped fighting for my rights with stupid people…I left such fights for those who have nothing else to fight…And I started fighting for my vision, my dreams, my ideas and my destiny… The day I gave up on small fights is the day I started becoming successful’

Are you leaving in the past, spending time thinking about past events you cannot change?

Why not turn a new leaf today and start living in the present? I mean focus on the now, and be optimistic for your future. Look after yourself because no one else would do that for you
