Nokia Loses Ground – Apple Rules The World On Handset Revenue

1

The news is out. Apple Inc. overtook Finland’s Nokia Corp. to claim the top spot in handset revenue in the Q1 of 2011, when Apple racked up record sales of its iPhone, according to research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics Inc.

In 2010, Apple was No. 1 in smartphone revenue, taking home 29 percent of the market value, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple had just 16 percent of the total smartphone unit volume in 2010, according to the firm.

The report shows that while Nokia is still a king in volume, Apple beats it in the revenue. In Q1 2011, Apple brought in $11.9b while Nokia raked $9.4b. In the same period in 2010, Nokia had $8.9b to Apple $5.3b. This report shows how far the global recovery has come as the revenue stream of these two firms were impressive over a year-to-year comparison.

Sony Updates on PlayStation Network and Qriocity Hacking and Problems

0

With the hacking of Playstation, Sony is asking folks to get in touch with their credit agencies (in US) to keep an eye on potential identity theft.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

The Epic Of Mobility – Moving People and Not Bits and Bytes. Innovation at MAARDEC

0

This is another type of mobility – moving people. Mobility Aid and Appliances Research and Development Centre (MAARDEC) is a registered non-profit organization established in April 1991 by Mr. Cosmas I. B. Okoli, a Nigerian with disability. Over the years, it has worked to mobilize people.

On 30th January 1992, MAARDEC was officially commissioned by the then president and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.

Since inception, the centre has transformed millions of lives of people with disabilities and has successfully developed and produced various types of mobility aids and appliances such as the award winning Cosokoli-Hand-Control-Mobilizer (for people with lower limb paralysis to drive with hands only), wheelchairs, crutches, leg braces, walking frames, equipment for the blind and other hospital equipment such as trolleys, couches etc.

The centre also provides physiotherapy services and free guidance and counseling services for people with disabilities and their family members; carries out mass enlightenment programmes to educate the general public on the proper attitude towards persons with disabilities, plight and prospects of people with disabilities thus, fostering a conducive environment for people with disabilities to maximize their abilities.

Assistance in job creation and placement for people with disabilities, training of persons with disabilities in small scale production of mobility aids and appliances, initiate charities and programmes aimed at, among others, to provide indigent persons with disabilities the right mobility aids and appliances free of charge, discourage street begging and build their self esteem. MAARDEC also pays attention to promotion of sports for persons with disabilities.

MIPS Technologies Gets Android 3.0 – Google Determining Winners and Losers

0

EETimes reports that MIPS Technologies Inc now has the official source access to Google Android 3.0. Congratulations to MIPS – it simply means that they will get ahead of the competition and come with products on this product before many others. We have noted that through this special treatment, Google is determining winners in the Android ecosystem. When you get it before your competition, you get to the market before them.

MIPS Technologies Inc. said that it has ”official source access” to Google’s Android 3.0, also known as “Honeycomb.”
MIPS Technologies is now porting this newest version of Android to the MIPS’ architecture. This will accelerate development of tablets and Google TV products based on the MIPS architecture.

“This is a big deal and puts to bed any thoughts that MIPS will be excluded from the Android ecosystem,” said Paul McWilliams, editor of technology investment newsletter Next Inning Technology Research. “It also gives MIPS significant leverage since very few semiconductor companies have direct early release access.”

“The Android platform has been a game-changer for MIPS Technologies,” said Art Swift, vice president of marketing and business development, MIPS Technologies, in a statement.
