Survey or Map Your Farm, Land and House by Yourself with Zenvus Boundary

This coming week, we will take one product we have used with governments and cooperatives around Africa to the retail consumer market. Zenvus Boundary maps farm, land or house perimeter boundaries, calculates the areas and populates the data onto Google Earth. And from Zenvus portal, the surveys can be downloaded or printed. It supports cooperatives, governments and individual farmers enabling these entities to have survey data at a fraction of the typical cost of surveys. Any person that uses smartphone or tablet can easily use this app to map a farm, land or house perimeter in any location.

It does not require internet access to map the farm but requires one later for data transfer to Zenvus portal. You can map many farms before transfer in areas with no internet access.

We have set the price of using this solution to map a farm, land, or house perimeter with the survey printed on Zenvus portal at $20 (N7,000 Nigerian naira) per property to maximum of 5 acres [for example, 6 acres would be captured as two farms, for $40]. You would have the opportunity to include your name, LGA, National Identity Number, etc.

We also have franchising/agent opportunities. It requires a one-time license fee [email for details] and offers 80% royalty on sales [You charge the farmer $20 but you send 20% to us while keeping 80%].You would have an enterprise account which will make it possible to map thousands of farms. Note: This technology was originally developed to map and survey perimeters of farms and farmlands for farmers. Though it can be used for perimeter of houses, lands, farms etc, we do not claim that it can be used in your jurisdiction for other purposes. People that want to see the boundaries of their properties (farm, land, home) have found the solution useful as we overlay that survey on Google Earth visualizing the whole experience. You may need to contact your government before you plan to use it for other purposes.

Every farm that has been mapped with Zenvus technology is automatically optimized for deployment of our sensors. We use the perimeters of the farms to know where the AI / analytic should focus as they communicate with farmers. We do not want to waste time analyzing the farmland of your neighbor; we only need yours and this mapping makes that possible.

Sure, there is no harm having the perimeter of that empty land, your home, etc all superimposed on Google Earth. There is nothing in a Surveyor General report that is not in this work except that no one is my office has a paid membership of the association. Yes, we do not have the stamp. So, do not ask.

Do Not Fear, You Need To Start Today – Nigeria Needs Innovations

Everyone will steal your idea. All the big industry players will hijack the vision. And that is why you have not started that business. Possibly, you may never start. And the world will continue to move on.

You fear your typist. You fear the graduate. You fear everyone. Then, you fear yourself.

Get a life, there is nothing new in this world. Pythagoras, Faraday, etc invented everything long ago. We are just combining them more efficiently using legal systems to make money. If Euclid had patented geometry and al-Khwarizmi Algebra, in perpetuity, we would not have computers and cellphones. That the world allowed us to monetize their ideas and inventions primarily to unlock capital should not make you feel most things are new.

Yes, innovation = invention + commercialization.

The men that pioneered most things died poor. Most of their families could not even afford graves for them. They were inventors and they invented. Yes, inventing things or coming up with ideas do not make you rich. It is innovating on things that do.

There was a time when the world was full of ideas but no products and services. They fixed that by making it possible for those with money to bring them to commercialize things [they gave the capital to those with ideas, making it possible that ideas became products and services].  Simply, the world invented the patent system to make it possible that capital can flow to commercialize ideas.  The U.S. awarded the first patent to Samuel Hopkins on July 31, 1790.

With capital secured via patent, the inventions move to innovations. And the world economy grew. With that growth, human welfare improved.

Technology penetration or diffusion has been a catalyst to this global economic redesign. Technology anchors innovation which typically drives productivity gain. Before 1500 AD, the world was largely an inventive society with so many ideas but little products and services for people to buy. Of course, during that period, the world experienced great scientific discoveries, demonstrating that mere expansion of scientific output does not necessarily give rise to improvement in the welfare of citizens.

Abu al-Khwarizmi, the Father of Algebra, had lived centuries before (780 to 850 AD), pioneering modern Algebra. Yet, in Baghdad, the land was poor.

Critically, nothing is really new. That you put Euclid equations on Python or C++ does not make it any better. That we allow you to patent that modification does not mean the world is stupid. Simply, that is the only way to get men with money to release it, to innovate on that idea, so that market needs are met. If not, no commercialization and we would have a society of ideas but no product [hello Nigeria].

All Together

The deal is not just the idea. The deal is executing  that idea. Everyone knows that Nigeria needs electricity, good roads, nice bridges, faster Internet, etc. That you know that does not make you special. The question is really ‘Who can make them happen?”

Now, get out of that fear. Go out and begin. Connect with right people, you would be fine. And where you feel there are reasons to protect the ideas, visit the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and get the necessary protections via patents, copyrights, trademarks, etc. We have them in the nation.

Reduce Your Development Investment on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger

Facebook is going through a redesign with its privacy policy and strategy. The social media giant has started to significantly limit data access to Facebook’s Events, Groups and Pages APIs. It has also shut down part of the Instagram API. This is expected as the company battles scandals with the mess it found itself with the Cambridge Analytica related privacy violations.

But I have a real concern on the broad trajectory: we will begin to have good privacy but that will also guarantee that we will have no tangential competitor to ICT utilities like Facebook. As TechCrunch reports, Facebook has cut out developers and many of them are not happy. The implication is that most apps built on Facebook Corp ecosystems have stopped working optimally.

Without warning, Instagram  has broken many of the unofficial apps built on its platform. This weekend it surprised developers with a massive reduction in how much data they can pull from the Instagram API, shrinking the API limit from 5,000 to 200 calls per user per hour. Apps that help people figure out if their followers follow them back or interact with them, analyze their audiences or find relevant hashtags are now quickly running into their API limits, leading to broken functionality and pissed off users.

People, we would have great privacy but without anyone asking these firms to share, we have lost any element of competition. It does not need to be this way.

All it would confirm is that Instagram has stopped accepting submissions of new apps, just as Facebook announced it would last week following backlash over Cambridge Analytica. Developers tell me they feel left in the dark and angry that the change wasn’t scheduled or even officially announced, preventing them from rebuilding their apps to require fewer API calls.

This would see a massive dislocation in the way the social media world has worked. If Facebook is forced to keep all the data it has to itself, it simply means that a good part of the “planet” would be out of the reach of many digital entities. This is a huge risk to many companies that have invested to build businesses on Facebook Corp’s platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

As they trim these APIs and cut-out access to data, most apps would lose what have made them great. As that happens, the best is to wait and save your resources because Facebook could come out of this and shut down critical interfaces to its ecosystems. Provided users are still posting and sharing data on its platform, Facebook would be fine. So, the real pains would be to developers and companies that depend on Facebook data to function. I know that many Nigerian banks are building on Messenger APIs. We do not know how far Facebook would go on this redesign.

Facebook would be fine. It has learnt a major lesson. I expect the guys running WhatsApp [Facebook Corp’s best product] to help. The WhatsApp team has been great, providing a platform people like to use to get things done.

The first 5 years of Facebook was under the control of Main Street algorithm. The last three years have been under the control of Wall Street algorithm. Under the latter, it became a den for entities with unlimited credit limit in their credit cards. They out-bided all and Facebook loved them. Today, they have poisoned the minds of Main Street and Facebook is worried. Making amends by prioritizing family and friends posts on feeds was a response to fix a challenged product.

All Together

As an aggregator, making it possible for Facebook to have legal rights to restrict all its data would harm competition and the broad industry. But the company has no choice after the mess of allowing a 3rd party to access data of about 80 million users. As we pile on the company, Facebook will make decisions. But at the end, those decisions would hurt the ecosystems. Because of its positions, the impacts would be marginal since there is no clear alternative to it.

But in terms of competition [not the direct version], that is lost. Your fintech app, game apps, etc, may have to wait for Facebook Corp to do it by itself since it cannot afford to share data that would enable an independent company to provide those services. Always remember the very reason why Facebook won MySpace was the ability to allow others to connect into its ecosystem via plugins which were not possible in then MySpace.

My suggestion is this: let us push Facebook to tighten privacy but not to use this mess to systematically cut-out the world from itself. Doing so would make it more dominant since in the near future anything Facebook does not do would not be available, and when it does that, it would not be worried that another person could do it better.
