Facebook reveals maiden flight of its internet drone

0

Facebook revealed the maiden flight of its vaguely terrifying internet drone. The solar-powered, carbon-fiber plane with a wingspan comparable to a Boeing 737’s took flight for about 90 minutes at a test facility in Arizona. Facebook hopes to use it to beam down internet access to remote areas, eventually staying aloft for months at a time.

A few years ago, Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched Internet.org, an initiative to bring internet to the poorest part of the world, and these internet-beaming super drones are part ofZuckerberg’s plan to coat the world in internet. The company has beencriticized in the past for potentially being able to profit from the internet access it aims to facilitate.

Elon Musk releases Tesla “master plan”

Elon Musk released his “master plan” for Tesla. The CEO outlined four goals for his electric-car company moving forward: delivering solar power to the masses, producing vehicles any home or business can buy (including heavy-duty trucks), making all Teslas fully self-driving, and building a car-sharing service. And, oh yes, weaning humanity off fossil fuels.

But the bar just got higher. In a post on Wednesday night (July 20), Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk outlined what it would take to fulfill the promise he made ten years ago: build a transportation fleet powered by solar energy to wean humanity off fossil-fuel powered cars.

Only 5.78% of Nigerians pay taxes

The Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Mr Tunde Fowler, says the total tax base for individuals in Nigeria is 10 million.

Fowler said this at the 2016 Tax Week of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) with the theme: “The dilemma of improving tax revenue generation in tough economic times’’ on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that taxation was based on profit and income therefore people must pay tax.

Fowler said that in spite of the present economic situation, there are certain sectors of the economy that were still doing quite well, generating enough profit.

“All we are saying is they should pay taxes, for individuals who are not doing well, the tax also is not very high and for those who are not making any income, there is no tax.

“Looking at membership in the small scale sector, they are said to have 37.5 million members; the total tax base for individuals in Nigeria is 10 million, so there’s a short fall of over 27.5 million”.

This does imply that about 5.8% of Nigerians pay tax if you round up the population to 173 million people.

Nigeria loses $425M to cybercrime, says Government

0

Nigeria loses about N127bn ($425M) to cybercrime annually, the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, has said.

Shittu, who said this at the opening of the 2016 National Conference of the Nigerian Computer Society in Abuja on Tuesday, also disclosed that over $32bn had been invested in the Information and Communications Technology sector in the last 15 years.

The minister said financial crimes and corruption were added burden to the national security challenges threatening the very existence and development of the country.

He said, “Our growing dependence on digital infrastructure introduces and poses grave threats to national security. Nigeria loses about N127bn, which is 0.08 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, yearly to cybercrime.

“Many more Nigerians now have access to Internet facilities. Our citizens now use the enormous opportunities this digital infrastructure brings to work, transact business, campaign, communicate, learn, interact and relax.

“Evidence abounds of the growing electronic fraud and threats to digital databases, both private and government. In view of the critical nature of the economy and government activities, it is obvious that protection from different types of cyber and terrorist attacks is required.

“Software piracy, identity theft, electronic fraud, online spam, intellectual property theft and malware attacks can all lead to devastating and far reaching consequences. In addition to the activities of hackers and cyber bandits, we know cyberspace is also being exploited to aid radicalisation and violent extremism, especially among the youth.”

To address emerging cyberthreats, Shittu said the government had set up computer emergency response teams through the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Information Technology Development Agency.

Additionally, he said, to further improve the nation’s preparedness to secure the cyberspace, the Cybercrime Advisory Council had also been inaugurated to facilitate the implementation of the Cybercrime Act, 2015 as well as the National Cyber-security Policy and Strategy.

On the positive side, the minister said ICT was currently contributing about 10 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, adding that it had created over 10 million jobs in the past 10 years.

Despite the impact, he added, there was still the need for accelerated development to foster inclusive development challenges.
