We Need Statistics – Nigeria Needs a Digital Presence

0

Where do you go to find information on Nigeria whether online, or offline?

Government agencies? I think not, then where?

The truth is as far as statistics and information is concerned in Nigeria, there is hardly any concrete source dependable enough to reckon with. I’ve googled these questions and here are my answers.

Question: What is the population of people in Nigeria?

Answer: 154,728,890, source world bank, dated 2009, whereas that of the US came from the US Census Bureau. The Nigerian population Commission web site still holds the record of 2006.

Question: How many Secondary schools do we have in Nigeria?

Answer: First result for England turned a specific value of 3,127 with a link to a source that had a stamp of authenticity from the English government. What we have is a sponsored listing maintained by NigeriaGallaria.com, which is simply just a list of schools that they know. Wikipedia however had a more comprehensive listing, sorted alphabetically in name and grouped according to state.

Question: How many students do we have in the Nigeria, secondary and tertiary.

Answer: No result for Nigeria.

Question: What is the exact amount earned by a Nigerian Senator?

Answer: $174,000 for US senator based on specific and publicly available calculations at www.opm.gov, but only the usual rumors for Nigeria, no document available to back any up.

Question: How many registered companies do we have in Nigeria, grouped under specific categories like IT, banking, etc?

Answer: All answers for this are just private web listings on various websites, with limited categorization and no statistics, the Corporate Affairs commission of Nigeria has a website that was last updated in 2006, so I didn’t even bother checking what they had.

What’s the point?

We have poor statistics in Nigeria, the government is poor at it, and individuals are no better, but I believe they are critical to progress and development. The question however, what is the solution?

Intelligent Mutability Management – A New Management Philosophy

0

So, what is Intelligent Mutability Management (IMM)?

Intelligent Mutability Management (IMM) is a new management concept that focuses on providing the right tools through which firms can intelligently disrupt themselves in order to reinvent themselves.

It underscores that over-protecting today’s industries from new sources of innovation could prevent future opportunities.

IMM applies to both private and public institutions. It looks at careful and intelligent mutation of entities in order to make them better. Excessive bailout and legislation to preserve today’s industries could create doom for future industries. IMM will help you understand the balance on how to nurture today’s industry while also allowing future ones to disrupt, if necessary, and evolve.

For firms, it creates that necessary reminder that you cannot seat on stale ideas. While they may be important, new ones must be allowed to emerge and succeed. That balance of internal disruption will make firms agile. It is agility to transition and transmute from one business to another as technology disrupts the market and the perception of customers shift.

IMM helps you understand the redesign in celebrated firms like IBM and GE which over the decades have navigated from one industry to another. They anticipate the shifts from customers and create new industries where they dominate. They constantly disrupt themselves and remain agile.  And the result is a big computer hardware firm working hard to save the planet.  And an iconic US brand leading the charge on alternative energy sources.

IMM examines the factors of disruption and computes matrix that drives that evolution from contemporary ideas to those of tomorrow. For instance, how will US lead the energy business of tomorrow if government legislates and ensures that today’s energy business is protected from disruption and new innovation? IMM will help you understand that mix and how to formulate the right framework to transition without turbulence in the economy or market.

Intelligent Mutability Management was coined by us.

Does Corporate Debts Sustain Efficiency? We Mean Does Having Debts Make You A Better Manager?

0

During quarterly earnings, analysts are constantly looking for debt profiles of companies. This is really important as lack of capacity to service debt could be very devastating to a company’s overall financial health. Too much unserviceable debts and a company is moving towards bankruptcy.

However, I tend to see this through another lens. Yes, I hate debts on company balance sheets. But a season of debt could also help managers to be become efficient in managing resources. When a firm goes through a season of austerity, managers could learn vital lessons that will position them during abundance.

It is the same thing that happens to families. We tend to behave differently when we have so much cash than when we have to borrow to survive. You learn great lessons under tough times that helps sustain you when good times arrive.

Understand that I am not approving debts, but I can carefully say that the lives of the Greeks and Britons may be different after their governments go through their redesigning processes.  So, having so much debt can actually become an instrument to rewire a nation from unsustainable habits.

Debts are not all that bad. Only few companies in this world were built without debts. What is really bad is when the debts were obtained recklessly without a plan to service them. America prides itself as a superpower, but it is also the world’s most indebted nation. It is the superdebtor of the universe.

You may be ignorant to meet Mr. Obama in the next UN Summit and open a discussion on debt forgiveness to the United States.  It is debt and it is America and no one should bother. But if it is Ghana, it becomes a troubling problem to the IMF or other world leaders.

That brings another point. The person that owes the debts matters more than the debt. In general, a world without debt will be really difficult. The guy that invented money from barter system did us a favor, but the guy that created debt made the world a better place.

I prefer to have all Africans take debts, live in good homes, enjoy the goodies of lives, than not getting those because there is no way to save and pay cash for goodies of lives. Their counterparts in US could own a home by paying less than 5% of the worth. That is debt, but the person has a better home and can have fun for the few years Nature has given us in this planet. The African is perpetually hoping to save 100% for the home which rarely materializes. That reminds me that it is time those leaders modernize the economic structure of the continent.

More debts people and let them spread them to Africa. We need them! A little debt could do you good.

Are You Ready? Outsourcing Should Be Live in Africa – Bring Your Ideas

0

Over the last few years, Africa has proven its capacity to reinvent itself through better governance and economics structures. It has a very young population with a dynamic business environment. The local businesses have become more innovative and corporate governance has improved. It is increasingly developing capability in critical areas of technology with some African engineers providing innovative solutions to global challenges.

Yet, Africa does not have any considerable share of the global outsourcing market. Europe and North America are not looking at Africa despite our comparative low wage and democratic institutions when compared to Asia. Accordingly, we think there is a need to develop this business and position the redesign that is taking place in the continent to the world.

We have done initial feasibility study and noted that the continent is ready. We have networks of firms that are credible and can handle most joint ventures.  Most private universities and selected public universities graduates are well trained and ready. We have data and we will provide them to help realize this goal. We want the world to engage talented Africans in critical areas of technology and business in general.

So we need help in the following areas:

  • A business model to help bring outsourcing to Africa. It may not be very hi-tech today, but we are ready for ethical clinical trials, packaging, data entry, CRM support, local consulting, etc.
  • Develop an execution strategy that is fluidic and adaptive to Africa and its conditions.
  • Link us to reputable global network that will us position African firms to growing international opportunities. We need contacts to China, US, Europe, Latin America and indeed all parts of the world. Where is the network that supports outsourcing and joins ventures? We need that entrance.
  • A world-class website, communication and brand plan to help change the perception and move businesses to look for opportunities in Africa.
  • Get international institutions connect to African schools for research and grant making in a more direct and less bureaucratic way. We help you link to experts and connect both to do business and technical research. The website will present this option clearly to clients.
  • “Today, we need people who understand Asia, European and American businesses. We need website designers and builders. Networked business icons. Consultants that are experts in creating things from zero. Together we will establish a one stop platform where outsourcing will reach Africa.

We see this as a website and a strong networking strategy with seasoned experts as the faces to tell the world that Africa is here for the outsourced jobs.
