Obami is a social networking platform for schools, teachers, students and parents. It is only accessible for pre-registered schools in South Africa. So it is a closed platform only open to pre-registered schools and their members. It is affiliated with the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA) and takes seriously the safety and security of its members.

 

How does it work?
Teachers, students and parents can interact and build communities on the platform to:

  • Distribute school newsletters and notices, and enable your school community to provide valuable feedback
  • Upload study notes, class handouts and helpful information
  • Assign, submit and mark homework, tests and projects
  • Share school events, term dates, exam timetables and sports fixtures
  • Upload photos and videos from the school play, the science experiment, or the swimming gala
  • Support correspondence and collaboration between, and amongst, classmates, teachers, and parents

 

It recently won a global award.

 

The Obami Team started off the year with a bang when it was announced that Obami had been awarded a spot as one of the world’s Top 10 most innovative companies across the globe at the prestigious Netexplorateur Forum!

The main reason why we chose to build DukaPress instead of using already existing platforms was because no other WordPress based e-commerce tool provides its users with what we feel are essential features of an e-commerce system. With DukaPress, we have made these features both free of charge and simple to use.

Ushahidi SwiftRiver Provides Trust Through Validation In A Sea of Patchy Data

SwiftRiver is an online tool for aggregating, managing, filtering and validating information from several data streams and feeds. It can be used as a standalone tool to aggregate and manage data from several sources or can be integrated with other applications that ‘consume’ the data such as mapping tools like Ushahidi.

 

It is also easy to use and intuitive. Being open source means it is customisable. Being online means that once it is installed, it is accessible from any computer with an Internet connection.

 

How does it work?
Once an instance of SwiftRiver has been downloaded and installed on a web server, the user specifies data streams to aggregate data from. The can be from including Email, news/blog feeds, twitter, SMS and more. Data and sources can be rated and sorted based on trustworthiness, reliability, etc.

 

The application uses a set of web services and APIs to help in the management of data. The functions these APIs carry out include:

 

  • Use keywords in text to determine related data
  • Detect the location of incoming data
  • Filter out duplicate content
  • Determine the popularity of incoming content

SMSsync Turns Mobile Phone Into A Local SMS Gateway And Then Syncs To The Web

SMSsync is a simple SMS to HTTP sync utility. It turns a mobile phone into a local SMS gateway that syncs to the web.It is already used internally in the Ushahidi Android app, to allow people without computer access to easily send messages to an Ushahidi deployment.

 

Other uses include: creating your own in-country SMS-to-Twitter app now utilizing SMSsync and the Twitter API; a radio station using SMSSync to have users respond to something on air.

 

How To Set It Up

  • To start the SMSSync Gateway, you’ll need to specify a callback URL. This URL is where all incoming text messages will be transmitted to.
  • For security you can specify at secret at the callback URL. If the secret doesn’t match, the callback URL will ignore the transmission.
  • Additionally, you can specify keywords with which to filter incoming messages. Only matching text messages will be sent to the SMSSync Gateway URL.
  • The SMSSync sends the following variables via the POST method:
    • from
    • message
    • secret

In order for SMSSync to account for perfect transmission, the callback URL needs to give back a formatted JSON string such as its shown below to indicate if it received the message or not.
