Alcatel-Lucent Designs The World’s Fastest Network Processor – 400Gbs

0

Alcatel-Lucent has engineered  a network processor capable of handling 400 Gbps. This is about 2x than any version made by Cisco. They join the top of the cadre in the domains of Huawei, Juniper and Ericsson.

Analysts think that this will give ALU a very huge advantage in the market, as well as worsening the stock position of Cisco whose business model has already being attacked by the like of Huawei as the latter raked up contracts in the developing world with its affordable products.

Cisco has lost more than 12 % of its market share in the  segment router market within the last five years.  EETImes gives the breakdown as follows.

Cisco owns the edge and core router markets, but its share has been slipping in recent years. Cisco commanded 42 percent of the $5.9 billion edge router market last year, down from 57 percent in 2006, according to Dell’Oro. It had a 58 percent share of the $2.7 billion core router market last year, with Juniper in second place at 30 percent.

Alca-Lu and Juniper were nearly tied for second place in edge routers last year at 22 and 20 percent respectively. Alca-Lu does not currently have a core router offering, but is expected to design one around the new FP3 chip. Juniper announced its latest router chip in late 2009.

Yes, the challenge remains for Alcatel-Lucent as this competition is no more between it and Cisco. Huawei which is moving fast with telecom companies in Africa is the greatest threat to most of these old players.

Kill Those That Vandalize Telecom Assets, Says ALTON Boss

0

This Association of Licensed Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ALTON) man must not be near the firing squad or where learned men use power to modernize society. He wants government to execute  people because they stole masts and repeaters, says the Vanguard. Nigeria does not need people like Engr Gbenga Adebayo in position of power. They are erratic and can do harm.

Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, last week repeated calls that the federal government should make the vandalisation of telecom infrastructure a capital offence to deter vandals from frustrating the efforts of telecom operators in Nigeria.

Of course, Tekedia does not support theft and vandalization. Yet, it is sheer ignorance for a leader of a corporate entity to suggest to government to execute people because they vandalize telecom assets. It simply shows how less he values human lives.

There are better ways of managing this type of problem. Beef up security and use technology to secure the assets. And when the guys come to steal, get them and let them do jail time. Do not kill anyone because they stole a repeater or anything. We need those lives. Let them go to jail and you help to rehabilitate them.

I mean this is a 21st century and people should not make Nigeria look like a stone age  nation. Government, for once, do not listen to this man. He has no point. Find a way to use the police to secure all properties of our citizens and corporate entities and when anyone offends the law, let the person pay with jail time or community service as it may be. Do not kill anyone with bullets or beheading for stealing from MTN, Glo , Airtel, or ALTON!

Microsoft Office 365 and The Era of Cloud Processing

0

With the launch of Office 365 by Microsoft, we have indeed entered a new domain in cloud computing.  But let us explain cloud computing, first, using  Wikipedia,

Cloud computing refers to the use and access of multiple server-based computational resources via a digital network (WAN, Internet connection using the World Wide Web, etc.). Cloud users may access the server resources using a computer, netbook, pad computer, smart phone, or other device. In cloud computing, applications are provided and managed by the cloud server and data is also stored remotely in the cloud configuration. Users do not download and install applications on their own device or computer; all processing and storage is maintained by the cloud server. The on-line services may be offered from a cloud provider or by a private organization.

With the transition of word processing to the cloud, it does imply that many office applications are moving to the cloud space. That is indeed a huge change for how companies work and how they plan.

In the cloud, Microsoft will retail Office 365. There will be Professional subscription for firms with about 25 users or less. There will also be Enterprise subscription for larger firms with more users. This product which went on sale yesterday will surely move to the Windows Mobile  tablet, Tekedia predicts within two years.

Office 365 includes the Microsoft Office suite of desktop applications and hosted versions of Microsoft’s Server products (including Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, and Lync Server), delivered and accessed over the Internet,in effect, the next version of Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS).
