How Android Won Search in Mobile Space for Google. Tekedia Predicts Chrome To Power Mobile Devices In 2014

0

Google remains a company that is heavily dependent on its search.  Most of its revenue comes from search.  A lot of analysts had called it a one pony company. Attack the search and Google is gone.

But that is where they get it wrong. Google has gone beyond that. Simply, Google has perfected a domination of the mobile search which is the next frontier.  It won the Internet long ago. Now, it has won the mobile with Android. Yes, we are very close to make the call despite our observation that Microsoft can disrupt by giving Office 365 away in Windows Mobile tablets.

In Q4 2010, mobile search grew for Google 4x  for web browsers while search on Android was 10x. It has been observed that  Android users search more often than regular smartphone users. This has to do with the way the OS was engineered.  It has a search button for most devices and there is also a search widget where users can start search. This simply makes it a hot device.

With the launch of Google Wallet, get ready for more fun in Android. That will push the competition to the next level.

But all in all, Tekedia predicts that irrespective of the success of Android, Chrome OS will soon add new flavors and power future tablets from Google. The reality is that Chrome OS is a mobile OS because it is web based. And we think tablets will do well on it. Then why will Google compete with Google , Android vs. Chrome. Answer: they have cash and money. For a company that will bring more than $27b this year, they can afford to play ideas with some engineers.

Finally, we benchmark Android with other mobile OS.

Interview in Amsterdam. FreedomLab hosted Tekedia Founder on many issues about Technology and Africa for an hour long interview. Most of the contents are exclusive for their members. This interview took place in Amsterdam as Dr N Ekekwe was traveling to the United Nations Summit in Freetown as a UN expert last December. The above is the small portion that made public.

Embedded Systems Design and Development and Achieving Vision 2020

0

Editor’s Note: Oghogho Ikponmwosa  of Landmark University, Nigeria will present a paper with the title above in the Fasmicro Embedded Systems MASTERs scheduled for July 18-22 this year. We invite embedded systems fans to register and attend this game changing workshop in Owerri.

Embedded Systems MASTERs Workshop in Owerri: July 18 -122. University Dons Will Present Papers.

Abstract of the paper: This paper presents massive investments in human capacity building to enhance the development of the Nigerian indigenous embedded systems technology as a key factor towards achieving Vision20:2020. The goals and objectives of Vision20:2020 as well as necessary steps or actions that have been identified as vital to the achievement of the vision are briefly discussed. Investment in technology driven Agriculture as well as Hi tech manufacturing industries to boost the Nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) stands out among the vital steps identified. No nation can develop beyond her technology or experience economic boom on borrowed technology.

Engaging in human capacity building through establishment and funding of training centers on Embedded systems design and development will provide the platform for indigenous solutions in the form of equipments, machines, tools, products, etc ranging from very simple to complex systems to be developed so as to meet the growing needs of our agricultural, manufacturing and other industrial sectors. Embedded digital technology is present in many equipments and systems, and is used to increase functionality, as well as to improve operation at low cost. Embedded systems are now found in almost all technical devices, from simple everyday home appliances, to facilities and facility management such as heating, air conditioning, elevators and escalators, in agricultural equipments and in production units from robotics to production automation and control systems.

With appropriate Government policies and the will to stick to the implementation plans, in place, sustenance of achieved development and economic growth resulting from development of embedded system technologies will be guaranteed. Soon we will have Nigerian made digital watches, mp3 players, phones, traffic lights, cable modems, calculators, technology driven farm tools, manufacturing and processing equipments, cars, etc designed, developed and produced by Nigerians for Nigerians and for other countries of the world. This will strengthen and grow our economy by boosting our GDP at an accelerated pace and vision20:2020 will then be achieved.

Apple Cuts Samsung As Component Supplier Over Patent Dispute

0

Apple has done it. It just killed of Samsung as a component supplier for its mobile devices. Tekedia has expected this to happen. And this is the cost Samsung has to pay by taking the route they took. It is going to be increasibly difficult for these companies to partner when they are enemies in the court. Tekedia made that observation many days that Apple will likely drop Samsung as this battle in the court goes on.

Lawyers smile, as usual, and by the end of the season, they will settle. Last Tekedia checked, they are selling iPad and Galaxy tab. It will not stop. It is just that lawyers are having good times.

What is next for Apple now? Most likely they will use TSMC for the production of the A6 processor which powers the iPad. This next generation ARM based design is expected to debut in 2012 and powers the next generation of the iPads. What Apple needs is a foundry since it makes and designs its processors. That makes life easier for them to shop around.

For Samsung? They just lost the #1 semiconductor purchaser in 2010. Apple bought more components than any other company in 2010. That could be a very huge revenue lost for Samsung and would even top what they might have lost if they have decided to settle with Apple.  Shipping to Apple brings prestige as you can market your products knowing that more companies will come will come if you provided components in the iPad and iPhone. Besides helping in the production of some components, Samsung supplied some parts. Apple shops for memory and does not make their own. They only make the ARM processors in-house and other components like gyroscopes, microphone,  and accelerometers are bought from vendors.

Social Media is A Business Tool. Court Your Customers and Develop ‘Quantifiable Courtship’

0

Facebook has brought a new dawn in business relationship with customers. It has transformed the ways organizations relate with their customers. Communication is instant and it is two-way. That relationship is deepening for firms that understand that brands can be built in the domain of social media. We are in a moment of time when all firms must ask, what is my  ‘quantifiable courtship (QC)’ level?.

What is quantifiable courtship” It is simply a metric to access how relationship with each customer in the social media has evolved with time. You need to track how many times they click on your articles, like your articles and basically log into the site page. You have to find out which of the products they consistently click when there are contents about them.

There are many ways to engage customers now. We have the media tablets, the smartphone, apps and the host of many avenues. Yet, each customer is unique. Using QC, you can find out which is the best way to court them. Without courting them, other companies will take them away from you. The business is now 24/7 and you cannot sleep with your brand.

Courtship brings loyalty and good customer loyalty is good business. You need to develop that model immediately if you have not. The Direct Marketing Association has noted that 28% of US companies use social media to deepen customer loyalty. That is still a small number.

Tekedia suggests to businesses to watch these trends

  • Understand that your customers are mobile and you have to court them as they move
  • You cannot control your brand easily. A Facebook post can kill it. You must be on alert
  • Let your message be sharp and focused
  • Get intimate with customers and court them through product loyalty, better service and more
