MXitis a free instant messaging application developed by MXit Lifestyle (Pty) Ltd. in South Africa that runs on multiple mobile and computing platforms. Along with its own standard protocol, it can connect to Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM, or Windows Live Messenger contacts as well.MXit currently has 27 Million subscribers, making it the largest social network in Africa, with 40 000 new subscribers joining every day.

Founded in South Africa by a Namibian entrepreneur, Herman Heunis, Mxit is a free instant messaging application that runs on both mobile and computing platforms. Mxit offers a wide range of services including social networking, mobile voice clips, music & entertainment, banking access and other community based applications. Through its own standard protocol, Mxit subscribers can also connect to other social networks and instant messaging applications such as Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ.

Between 2005 when it launched and now, Mxit has amassed close to 20 million subscribers, making it one of the larger social networks in the world and the largest in Africa. It currently transmits over 250 million messages per day and features some of the common functions of a conventional instant messaging client, such as file transfers, contact lists, a group chat called MultiMX and photo sharing through a mobile phone’s built-in camera.

Developed by Google based on the Linux kernel and Java, it offers virtually limitless opportunities because of its open-source license. Embedded systems itself is a branch of microelectronics which has revolutionized the world of commerce and industry. This workshop will introduce participants to these core areas of modern technology.

This MASTERs is a hands-on Android course designed to provide essential skills and experience with developing applications on Android mobile platform. Throughout the course, participants will develop real-life applications, which can serve as basis for their future Android projects. Eclipse and Android SDK are used as the development environment throughout the class.
