The Indefatigable Spirit of Igbo Nation, Captured in “onye kwe chi ya ekwe” [video]
The Igbo Nation has a deep belief in personal responsibility and freedom, which you can see in the saying “onye kwe chi ya ekwe”—”if you believe, your personal god will believe.” This simple but powerful line shows that your destiny is in your own hands. It’s not up to your king, your boss, or anyone else.

This message truly comes to life in the University of Alberta’s choir performance. Even in Canada, the song is deeply moving, as if the divine is listening. The same powerful message echoes in Igbo churches, in traditional war dances, and in homes.

If you can grasp the meaning of this song, you’ll see how the Igbo people’s personal gods, or “chis,” connect them to the supreme being, Chineke. So, irrespective of whatever you are confronted with, the mantra is this: if you believe it, even your personal god will play along, and you do not need to consider whatever a king, politician, etc thinks.

Udo diri unu—peace to you all.
