70% of Nigerians Embrace Generative AI, Surpassing Global Usage Rates – Survey

In a recent survey conducted by Google in partnership with Ipsos, to understand global public attitudes toward AI, findings reveal that Nigerians outpaced the world in AI usage.

The survey based on 21,000 interviews across 21 countries, found that 70% of Nigerians used generative AI in the past year, significantly higher than the global average of 48%.

This showcased the nation’s optimism and readiness to harness its benefits, as a significant number of Nigerians leverage AI beyond entertainment, but rather apply it to work, education, personal projects, and entertainment.

The survey revealed that Nigerians are overwhelmingly excited about Al’s potential, with 87% expressing enthusiasm compared to 13% who are concerned. Among those who have used Al, excitement rises to 91%, than 9% concerned. This mirrors global trends, where using Al often mitigates apprehension. Nigerians also prioritize fostering innovation in science and medicine through Al regulation (75%) over protecting affected industries (25%).

Al’s Role in Economic Growth

Nigerians are optimistic about Al’s economic impact, with 85% believing Al will positively transform jobs and industries in the next five years, compared to 8% who do not. Additionally, 81% expect Al to bring positive economic changes, well above the global average of 49%. Fewer Nigerians (9%) anticipate needing to switch industries due to Al, compared to the global average of 16%.

Nigerians see immense value in Al’s current and future applications. Anticipated positive impacts include advancements in science (93%), education (90%), agriculture (87%), and medicine (86%). On a personal level, 95% of Nigerians believe Al will directly benefit individuals like them, far exceeding the global average of 59%.

AI Usage At Work

Al is widely used professionally in Nigeria, with 93% of users disclosing that they use AI for work, higher than the global average of 74%. Common uses include writing (91%), brainstorming (91%), problem-solving (92%), and processing complex information (85%). Nigerians also view Al as a tool to enhance strategic business decisions (96%) and manage complex systems (95%).

Most Nigerians (57%) believe the country is taking adequate steps to leverage Al for economic growth. There is strong public support with 89% urging for collaboration between technology companies and the government to maximize Al’s potential. Furthermore, 87% back investments in infrastructure such as high-speed internet and electricity to support Al’s immense development.

Looking Ahead

As Generative AI adoption soars, with 70% of Nigerians leading the way, a large number of them are enthusiastic about Al’s ability to reshape industries, enhance productivity, and drive societal advancements.

With a collective focus on innovation, regulation, and infrastructure, Nigeria is poised to lead in adopting Al-driven solutions for a brighter future.

  1. we need to work on improving power generation and ICT awareness in Nigeria especially for the youth and fresh inexperience employees just coming into labor market in order to support AI generation setting in gradually.
