Alan and Lisa Robertson are talking about a challenging period in their life. In the new film Faith & Forgiveness, which chronicles their decades-long relationship, the Duck Dynasty stars described how they resolved an affair Lisa had fifteen years into their marriage.

"When unfaithfulness happens in a marriage, so many times, that’s the end of it, but it doesn’t have to be," during a May 15 interview, Alan told Fox News Digital. "Everything can be worked through."

In the 1990s, Lisa, who was married to Alan in 1984 and had two daughters, Alex and Anna, had an extramarital affair. When Alan found out, the couple decided to temporarily split up, but in 1999 they reconnected and restored their vows.

"I think the reason I was willing to fight for my marriage was that I had made a lot of mistakes on my own," Alan clarified. "When I first met Lisa, she was actually a good girl, who had experienced some hard things in her life up until that point, but really was looking for what she called her ‘knight in shining armor,’ someone to take her hand and lead her out of some things. And I just wasn’t that guy in the early years."

In fact, the reality idol believed that his wife experienced feeling alone and isolated when he was abroad on business for a large portion of his time as a pastor.

"To be quite honest with you, I made a huge mistake in not pulling Lisa in as a partner in what we were doing, in my career and my dreams," the 61-year-old revealed. "[She] was also dealing with all this internal stuff from when she was young. I just didn’t recognize it. I didn’t see it."

Additionally, a large portion of Lisa's problems were related to the sexual assault she endured as a youngster.

"From an early age, at age 7, I was subjected to someone molesting me," she informed Fox News. "I believe that at age 7, I began to be dishonest with who I was and what I was.”

“The evil one played a huge part in that because he would constantly remind me,” the 60-year-old continued. “I started on that trail of dishonesty at that point, and that darkness really began there. As I grew older, it got worse and worse."

Since he had cheated on his wife before they were married, Alan also thought it was appropriate to forgive her, pointing out that she was able to forgive him and begin a family with him.

"Out of my own appreciation for not only what God had done for me, but also what Lisa had done for me, it gave me that capacity to forgive infidelity,” he clarified. “That’s when it all changed. We knew we were going to find our way back together."

Lisa now believes that she and Alan have discovered the key to sustaining their 42-year union.

“There has to be honesty," she stated. "Honesty is the most important thing that you can do to have a very successful marriage.”
