Arthur Celebrates 30 Years as PBS KIDS Marks Beloved Show's Anniversary.

It's time to take Arthur for a stroll down memory lane. The beloved anthropomorphic brown aardvark is the subject of a long-running animated children's television series on PBS Kids that is commemorating its 30th year.

Indeed, D.W. is not necessary to verify that you have read that correctly. On November 7 and 8, PBS Kids will honor the 30th anniversary of Arthur's October 1996 debut with a marathon of fan-favorite episodes.

“30 years ago, we premiered on @PBSKIDS, and it's been a wonderful kind of time since,” the official Instagram account of the event posted a reflection on its legacy. “Thank you for letting us into your homes and communities. Here's to future generations learning to believe in themselves, work together, and make things better!”

The show followed Arthur Read, his best buddy Buster, his sister D.W., and other characters on their adventures in Elwood City. It was based on Marc Brown's Arthur Adventure children's book series.

Despite being a children's program, Arthur covered a wide range of subjects outside of homework, including the challenges of growing up, family relationships, mental health issues, and, of course, the significance of getting a library card.

Before ending permanently in 2022, the show went for an unprecedented 25 seasons with over 250 episodes. Arthur became the longest-running children's program in American history at the time.

When millennials learned that the show about their favorite bespectacled character was ending, they were prepared to clench their fists, but Arthur concluded with a bittersweet message.

Following all, as the show fast-forwarded into the future and showed were Arthur and his friends were up to 20 years later in the last episode, "All Grown Up," viewers removed their glasses to wipe away their tears.

The main character went on to become a graphic novelist, and the sitcom turned self-referential, revealing that Arthur had been his memoir all along.

Even though the children's show no longer has new episodes, it's always a great day to rewatch one or two. Above all, though, Arthur will never really disappear from the cultural discourse, in part because of the show's continued popularity through memes, as Brown has admitted.

“I am amazed that these young people who grew up with Arthur, that these characters have stayed with them and made an impression on how they think,” in 2022, the author informed media outlets. “The fact that they're using a character's personality as a reference point in their social media, I find that very interesting. And it makes me pleased that these characters have become that iconic that other people understand what they're saying.”

Beyond its television legacy, Arthur has also found a new way to connect with audiences through podcasting. The Arthur Podcast, produced by GBH Kids and distributed by PBS KIDS and PRX, launched in October 2022, bringing back Arthur, D.W., Buster, and their friends through audio adaptations of memorable stories from the original animated series, alongside fresh commentary from Arthur himself.

The podcast has continued to expand, with its fifth season premiering on November 5, 2026. The new episodes bring listeners back to Elwood City for more familiar adventures, including stories featuring Buster and Brain, Arthur's family, and Mr. Ratburn. The series gives longtime fans another opportunity to revisit the characters while introducing younger audiences to their stories in an audio format.

With the television series still available to stream, a growing podcast collection, and its 30th-anniversary marathon approaching, Arthur continues to find ways to remain part of popular culture even years after its television finale.
