Jack Campbell is making his own gathering call. The Detroit Lions linebacker broke his silence to provide a favorable update three days after he was carried off the field on a stretcher due to an immobilizing neck injury.
“I’m incredibly encouraged by the progress I’ve made in such a short period of time,” on November 4, Campbell posted a statement on the Lions' Instagram. “I have full movement in my lower body, and I’m continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body.”
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old continued, “I know there’s still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic. I’m taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better.”
Campbell said he has been relying on his trust in God since suffering the injury during the fourth quarter of the team's 19-15 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, which left him lying face down on the field and appearing to be immobile at the time.
“I know He has a plan for me, and I trust in that plan,” the athlete added. “I know there may be challenges ahead, but with my faith, my family, and so many people in my corner, I know we’ll get through this.”
The University of Iowa alumnus also stressed how appreciative he and his family—including his wife Megan and their 4-month-old baby Cooper—are of the "overwhelming" support they have received from fans during his recuperation.
Additionally, Campbell expressed gratitude to the medical personnel that had assisted him.
“I especially want to thank the athletic trainers and medical personnel who responded and cared for me on the field,” he penned. “I know those were difficult moments, and I'm incredibly grateful for the professionalism, compassion, and care you showed me. The way you handled everything and looked after me when I needed it most is something I'll never forget.”
According to the NFL player, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
Campbell switched his attention to his squad while stating that he intends to "approach this challenge" with the "toughness, resilience, and grit" that Detroit is built upon.
“To my teammates, coaches, and everyone in the Lions organization, I want you to know how much I love and appreciate you,” he revealed. “This team is a family to me, and the way everyone has been there for me means everything. I'm proud to be a Detroit Lion and couldn't ask to be surrounded by a better group of people.”
