In a Nov. 5 Instagram video, Stephen Kalyn, who plays hockey star Dean Di Laurentis, answered a knock at the door and asked the camera, "What? Did you miss us?" Mika Abdalla, "Dean and Allie are officially back for season two," said Allie Hayes, who is returning as a theater student, just before the door closed and the show's release date was written on the sign.
After an intense season one climax that culminated in a massive brawl between Allie, Dean, and fellow hockey player Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans), the second installment begins.
The heated exchange paved the way for Dean and Allie, Hannah Wells's best friend (Ella Bright), to become friends with benefits. the game-winning relationship between last season's leading woman and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) will take center stage in season two.
In the meantime, Grace Ivers (India Fowler) and John Logan (Antoni Cipriano) will be navigating the early stages of their own romance.
"We are so excited to continue Allie and Dean's story as our primary romance of season 2 after kickstarting their romance in season 1," in a May statement, showrunner Louisa Levy made the announcement. "But if you fell in love with Hannah and Garrett, don't worry—they will still be an integral part of our robust ensemble."
While Logan and Grace are the protagonists in Elle Kennedy's second book, The Mistake, and Dean and Allie's romance is included in her third book, The Score, Levy pointed out that the momentum of the first season caused the shift.
"I wanted viewers to know who they were going to be tuning in for next," Variety was informed at that point in time. "Allie felt so organic, because she's Hannah's best friend and Dean is already there, and their love story in the book is a secret—so why not let it be a surprise, even to book fans, when we're going to launch it?"
"Some things had to work a little differently because of the timing and the way we platform them," she added, "but I promise all the fan-favorite things are still intended and planned. There's still a lot of roads with those two."
For example, Hunter was required as an enemy in the Prime Video series; Allie had a one-night stand with him before witnessing the hostility between him and Dean, which led to the previously described altercation.
"He also comes from the same world as Dean, which made his arrival feel organic," she clarified. "We needed to throw a wrench into Dean and Allie's arrangement to elongate their story, and pulling from that universe felt right."
Kennedy, on the other hand, is excited to watch Logan and Grace's developing romance develop.
"I did get to see the chemistry tests with Antonio and India, who is cast as Grace, and they are spectacular together," prior to the start of season one, she informed media outlets. "That's what I'm probably most excited for."
"She rambles when she's nervous and she's just so random," she mentioned the new role. "I think people will really resonate with her because she is just awkward. There are moments where, in the book, I was writing it and I was cringing, I'm like, 'No, Grace, shut up!' I'm very excited to see that."
