“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our daughter, Cristina, passed away Monday morning,” on July 8, her family posted on Instagram. “She suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while at her Day Program and was rushed to the hospital. Despite the doctors' best efforts to stabilize her heart, she did not survive.”
Sanz's family stated they were "able to be by her side at the end," despite calling her passing "unexpected" and "a total shock."
“We will forever treasure the gift of her life,” the statement from the family was ended. “We will all carry in our hearts the wonderful ‘Cristina moments’ that she gave us.”
Following Sanz's passing, A&E also expressed their sympathies.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cristina Sanz, who touched the hearts of many through her time on Born This Way,” in a statement released on July 8, a network representative informed news organization. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.”
Sanz got married to her then-husband Angel Callahan amid the 2015–2019 season of Born This Way, which chronicled their relationship and day-to-day activities.
She has met a number of celebrities, such as Jamie Lee Curtis during the 2016 Emmys, where Born This Way won Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, and Alicia Keys on the set of The Voice.
Sanz was ecstatic when Curtis won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2023.
“Ahhhhhh so so happy for Jamie,” at the moment, she posted on Instagram March 2023. “When we won our Emmy she was there and she was the first person to stand up and give us and standing ovation. You WON now, go girl!!!! So happy for you. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!”
