In business, do not aspire to replicate the business model of your mentor. He/she had probably locked up the best opportunity under first-mover advantage. Besides, when you create a separation in a new sector, you would get the best support from him/her. Look for an uncontested sector [for both of you] and plot a way he/she can assist.

Even in the trader's apprenticeship system, you do not open your own shop on the same line your master is trading; you weren't settled to drag customers with your master, rather you are expected to build your own customers base.

Same is applicable in mentorship, you have to come up with something different or do the same thing differently, in order to guarantee your survival.
