Euronews Kazakhstan Celebrates One-Year Anniversary: A Gateway Between Central Asia and Europe

One year ago, in January, Euronews opened its first regional office in Astana, Kazakhstan, marking a significant step in the network’s mission to deliver first-hand reporting from around the globe. In just twelve months, the Astana bureau has grown into a vibrant hub of storytelling, bringing Kazakhstan and Central Asia’s diverse culture, history, and economic potential to international audiences.

This milestone not only reflects Euronews’ expanding global vision but also highlights Central Asia’s growing role as a dynamic region bridging East and West.

Why Kazakhstan?

Central Asia is rapidly becoming one of the most vibrant, fast-developing regions in the world. With its expanding economy, rich cultural heritage, and increasing engagement with European investors, Kazakhstan stood out as the ideal location for Euronews to establish a presence.

Recognizing this, Euronews hired a team of experienced local journalists in Astana to capture the region’s stories. Their mission: to present Central Asia’s traditions, landscapes, business opportunities, and people to a global audience often unfamiliar with the depth of the region’s heritage.

“Our goal is to showcase the region's rich heritage, culture, traditions, places to see, events to attend, food to eat, business opportunities to seize, investment possibilities to explore. And its people,” explained Bojan Brkic, the Astana bureau chief. “In other words, we want to inform the audience about everything they are often interested in but did not know exists in this region.”

A Year of Impactful Reporting

In its first year, the Astana bureau has produced more than 50 episodes focusing on Kazakhstan and the wider Central Asian region. From live coverage of major political and economic events to cultural features, the bureau has ensured that audiences across Europe and beyond gain a better understanding of this diverse region.

Some highlights include live reporting from the EU-Central Asia Summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and the Astana International Forum, a key platform for discussing regional cooperation and global challenges. In addition, dozens of published articles have attracted over a million views on Euronews platforms—evidence of the growing appetite for Central Asian stories worldwide.

Adlet Alimkhanov, CEO of the Media Development Fund, praised the collaboration:

“We collaborate with Euronews in the production of high-quality, informative projects designed for an international audience. These projects are commendable for both their high production value and carefully selected topics. They allow us to show the dynamic development of the country and allow our media industry to become more competitive on the global level.”

Three Signature Series

Perhaps the most striking achievement of Euronews Kazakhstan’s first year is its production of three distinct series that vividly portray the region’s culture, people, and economy.

  1. Modern Nomads
This series explores Kazakhstan’s traditions, heritage, and natural wonders. With 22 episodes produced so far, topics range from traditional clothing and jewelry to opera, ballet, national parks, festivals, and local cuisine. It offers international viewers a window into the cultural richness and living traditions of the Kazakh people.
  2. Voices from Central Asia
A human-focused series presenting the stories of notable individuals across the region. With 12 episodes, it highlights academics, musicians, athletes, surgeons, and actors, each offering a unique insight into the “Kazakh dream” and the contemporary way of life in Central Asia.
  3. East West Connect
This business-oriented series examines the economic development of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It shines a spotlight on the region’s growing ties with Europe, exploring themes of investment, trade, and cooperation that are shaping the future of cross-continental relations.

Together, these series have helped reposition Kazakhstan on the global map—not just as a faraway country but as a dynamic, evolving nation with much to offer.

A New Chapter in Global Storytelling

For Kazakhstan, the presence of Euronews represents more than just media coverage; it symbolizes an opportunity to project the nation’s image to the world. As Maksat Urgenshbaev, CEO of the “24 KZ” TV Channel, part of the Habar Agency, noted:

“Euronews is the information window into Europe for Kazakhstan. It is the source of current information about the main global events. The opening of its bureau in Kazakhstan facilitated the spread of information about our country to the wide global audience. We got a unique opportunity to introduce our culture and history to the world. Also, to relate our experience with the economic and social reform. Owing to that, Kazakhstan now stands shoulder to shoulder with the developed countries in the information flow.”

This collaboration has also allowed Kazakh journalists to exchange ideas and skills with their European counterparts, strengthening the country’s media industry and expanding its global reach.

Looking Ahead

As Euronews Kazakhstan celebrates its first anniversary, the bureau’s work has already proven vital in amplifying Central Asia’s voice on the world stage. By continuing to cover cultural, economic, and social stories from the region, the bureau is set to play a central role in deepening mutual understanding between Europe and Central Asia.

In its second year and beyond, viewers can expect even more groundbreaking stories, insightful features, and in-depth reporting that highlight Kazakhstan’s transformation, resilience, and aspirations.

For Euronews, this anniversary is just the beginning of a long-term commitment: to shine a light on untold stories, connect diverse audiences, and ensure that Central Asia is no longer a distant corner of the map but an essential part of the global conversation.

Final Thoughts

The one-year anniversary of Euronews Kazakhstan marks more than a media milestone—it reflects a new chapter in how Central Asia is seen and understood on the global stage. By blending cultural storytelling, human narratives, and economic insights, the Astana bureau has become a bridge between East and West.

In a world where authentic voices and diverse perspectives matter more than ever, Euronews Kazakhstan has shown that the stories of this region are not just relevant but essential. Its continued growth promises to further enrich the global conversation and place Kazakhstan firmly at the crossroads of international dialogue.

Conclusion

Euronews Kazakhstan’s first anniversary is a testament to the power of storytelling in bridging cultures and regions. In just one year, the Astana bureau has brought Central Asia closer to global audiences, showcasing its traditions, innovations, and people with authenticity and depth. As it continues to expand its reach, the bureau is not only amplifying Kazakhstan’s voice on the world stage but also fostering greater understanding between Europe and Central Asia. This is just the beginning of a long journey—one that promises to further connect, inspire, and inform audiences worldwide.
