Grey's Anatomy alum Eric Dane passed away at age 53 following an ALS battle.

The people who loved Eric Dane will never forget him. After a protracted fight with ALS, the actor most known for his parts on Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy passed away on February 19. His age was 53.

"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," Rebecca Gayheart, his wife, and several members of his family informed media outlets in a statement. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement added. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

In April 2025, Eric revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, better known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). At that point, he stated to People, "I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter."

And he was eager to continue working for as long as possible.

"I feel great when I'm at work," in June 2025, he informed media organizations. "Of course, there have been some sort of setbacks, but I feel pretty good. My spirit is always pretty buoyant, so at the end of the day, that's all that matters."

And Eric tried his best to stay optimistic in spite of his challenging health struggle.

“I wanna ring every bell,” in a TikTok video posted by California congressman Eric Swalwell in September, he informed the lawmaker. “I have two daughters at home. I wanna see them graduate college, get married, maybe have grandkids.”

Eric continued, “I wanna be there for all that. So, I’m gonna fight until the last breath on this one.”

He also fought because he wanted to be there for his daughters, Georgia and Billie, especially because his own father passed away when Eric was just 7 years old.

“I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young,” in a June interview with Good Morning America, he stated this with tears in his eyes. “At the end of the day, I just want to spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can.”

Despite having a lengthy and diverse career, Eric gained a whole new following because to his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan in season two of ABC's enduring Grey's Anatomy.

Furthermore, although the persona was referred to as McSteamy, Eric didn't think of himself in the same light.

"My exterior did not match my interior,” in 2024, he revealed on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert. “That was weird for me because I never saw myself as that. It was a real source of self-doubt. I felt fraudulent."
