Gucci Mane reveals his schizophrenia diagnosis, and his wife Keyshia Ka’Oir has been supporting him in getting the help he needs.

Gucci Mane talks about his experience with mental health. The rapper reflected on a 2020 mental health incident that caused him to seek therapy after disclosing in his book Episodes: The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man, published on October 14, that he has been diagnosed with bipolar illness and schizophrenia.

“After that, I was like, ‘Man, I got to really just hold myself accountable and take care of my health,’” Gucci Mane, 45, stated at The Breakfast Club's October 20 show. “I don’t never want to have an episode again. I’m gonna see a therapist, [even] if I have to take medicine.”

He went on, “I kinda threw the towel in. [Whatever] I need to do to get better. I just didn’t ever want to have that happen again.”

In fact, the "Wake Up in the Sky" singer (actual name Radric Davis) was admitted to the hospital after his wife Keyshia Ka'Oir, with whom he has a 4-year-old boy named Ice Davis and a 2-year-old daughter named Iceland Ka'oir Davis, took over for her husband during his mental health issues.

“I called his attorney, I called some bodyguards, and I planned a whole kidnap, and we kidnapped him and took him to the hospital,” on the radio program, she revealed. “He was trying to fight them and everything, but it was six of them and he couldn’t handle it. We threw him in the car, and he would try to jump out of the car, so we put him in the center of the car.”

As per to the Mayo Clinic, Gucci Mane experienced hallucinations in which he heard voices and saw illusions as part of his experience with schizophrenia, a dangerous mental illness that affects how people understand reality.

Following Keyshia's attention, the 40-year-old, who married Gucci Mane in 2017, started putting in place a "system" that allows her to "catch" when the rapper is about to have an episode and help stop it from happening. The 2020 episode was "his last," she said.

Gucci Mane added that he was inspired to get the assistance he required in part by his son.

“My wife was pregnant with my little boy,” he revealed. “I don’t want to raise a family and then my mental health [is] gone. What if I have an episode I can’t come back from? So, I just started doing the work and started seeking help.”

Gucci Mane also opened up about his past behavior, particularly a 2013 Twitter rant where he lashed out at fellow artists Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Rick Ross. In his candid interview on The Breakfast Club, he expressed deep embarrassment over those comments, acknowledging that they stemmed from a dark period in his life marked by mental health struggles.

He admitted, “I wasn’t well,” and emphasized how ashamed he felt looking back on those moments. Gucci shared that he's since apologized to the artists involved and is committed to personal growth and accountability. His reflections have sparked praise from fans and peers alike, many applauding his vulnerability and maturity.
