Nelly Furtado is prepared to switch off the lights on stage. The singer of "I am Like a Bird" revealed her intentions to take an indefinite hiatus from performing live and traveling, marking a significant change in her career.
“I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future,” on October 24, she posted something on Instagram. “and pursue some other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.”
After her debut album Whoa, Nelly! was released in October 2000, the 46-year-old continued by thanking her fans and partners “for all the years of fun, community and wonder.”
“I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby, I was lucky enough to make into a career,” she went on. “I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”
Nelly also sent a supportive message to aspiring musicians who aspire to be like her, wishing the “new generation of artists" "many years of fruitful and passionate performance."
The Grammy winner's tunes are still popular with younger followers on social media, even though she may be taking a vacation from performance.
“To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful,” she exclaimed. “It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music. It’s made me really believe in magic.”
Nelly has also been quick to attribute her success in navigating the digital world to her daughter Nevis Gahunia, 22, whom she shares with former partner Jasper Gahunia.
“I would say when my music first started trending on TikTok, my oldest daughter was only 16 or 17,” Nelly made her announcement in August 2024. “At the time, I was quite unfamiliar with it cause I was home with the babies and stuff.” (Nelly is also mom to a 7-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son with rapper Jerry.)
Nevis has actually become a crucial part of Nelly's work life, she said.
“I'm lucky she comes in the studio with me and helps me out as well,” she exclaimed. “There's nothing better than having that creative connection with your child and being able to work on something special together.”
