Reneé Rapp’s new song "Leave Me Alone" has sparked speculation that she may have subtly shaded her former show, The Sex Lives of College Girls. In the second verse, she sings, "I took my sex life with me, now the show ain't f--king," which some fans interpret as a reference to her departure from the series.
"I took my sex life with me, now the show ain't f--king," Reneé sings on the second verse of the track. "Leave me alone, b---h, I wanna have fun."
Rapp left the show in 2023 after two seasons, citing personal struggles during filming, including self-doubt and challenges with playing a queer character while navigating her own sexuality. While she hasn’t explicitly confirmed that the lyric is a diss, her past comments about her experience on the show suggest that she had a difficult time on set.
Although the "Pretty Girls" singer, who played Leighton on the comedy series for two seasons before declaring her departure in July 2023, has not acknowledged that the line is a diss, she has previously discussed why she had a rough time on the set of Sex Lives, which was canceled in 2025 after the release of its third installment.
Her latest single is part of her upcoming album Bite Me, and it continues her signature bold, unapologetic style. Whether or not the lyric was meant as a direct jab, it certainly adds to the intrigue surrounding her music and career evolution.
"The first year doing College Girls was terrible," Reneé told Alex Cooper on a February episode of her Call Her Daddy podcast. "It sucked so bad."
The bisexual Mean Girls star, who was at the time in a heteronormative relationship, continued by saying that she first experienced a great deal of self-doubt about portraying a queer character.
"I was like, 'I don't think I'm good enough to be here,'" she recalled. "I was just in panic constantly. I wasn't straight, but I was so freaked out by the idea of my sexuality not being finite or people laughing at me—or me laughing at myself—that I hated the first year of filming."
When Reneé announced her departure from the Mindy Kaling-created series, which also starred Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott, she spoke about how she gradually came to enjoy her character as Leighton.
"A lot of queer work gets belittled—but playing Leighton has changed my life," Reneé wrote on Instagram at the time. "I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. I hope she gave y'all a little bit of that too. She's such a tiny part of representation but even the tiny parts count."
Mindy concurred, saying that it was difficult to watch Reneé leave the series. She went on to say, "I would not be half the person I am without her and y'all."
"We love @reneerapp so much, "At that moment, the Office alum posted on her Instagram Stories., "and of course will be so sad to say goodbye to Leighton Murray!"
