“The last thing that kind of hit me that was very liberating was I had a bit of a health scare,” Ted stated in his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, on May 6. “I’m totally fine, but it was like, ‘Oh, well, that’s real.’”
The 78-year-old found the experience especially "humbling" since it helped him understand that dying is "the real deal."
“It’s not just a rumor,” he made a joke... “‘Ted Danson doesn’t get a free pass. Love his work.’”
The Emmy winner stated that he "hadn't f--ked up in some way," but he did not disclose the severity of his health problems, so everything was somewhat unexpected.
“It was very humbling and calming, and I’m fine,” he said it again. “I think it was the best thing that could have happened to me, and I’m doing some things differently.”
Actually, his journey forced him to put his health and daily routines first, even going so far as to start meditating twice a day with his 30-year wife, Mary Steenburgen.
“It’s like, wow, I’ve always talked about it,” he joked, “and lied about it.”
Ted has stated that, in addition to emphasizing lifestyle modifications, it has given him "the biggest gift of all," as it has increased his interest in those surrounding him.
“You can be curious about other people,” he clarified. “You can listen and you can be supportive, caring. You can witness them.”
“And I do believe that the rest of my life is to be curious and listen,” Ted stated. “That’s the best thing I can offer.”
