More information on Kyle Busch's demise has been made public. The 41-year-old NASCAR Cup Series champion passed just two days later, and his family revealed that acute pneumonia that developed into sepsis was the cause of his passing.
"The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications," according to NBC News, the Busch family announced in a statement on May 23. "The family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."
A few hours prior to the driver's passing, Busch's family said that he had been admitted to the hospital due to "a severe illness."
"He is currently undergoing treatment," the post from May 21 on X stated, "and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation."
Later that day, NASCAR verified the racing driver, who is married to Samantha Busch and has two children, Brexton, 11, and Lennix, 4.
"Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch," the association and the Busch family released a joint remark on X. "A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans."
"NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon," the statement went on. "During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family's privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers."
Additional information has subsequently surfaced, such as the fact that Busch fainted the day before he died while testing the Chevrolet racing simulator, according to multiple persons with knowledge of the matter who spoke to the Associated Press.
Before being sent to a local hospital, the athlete—one of the most renowned drivers in the sport's history—became unresponsive, according to the site.
However, Busch had also been having health issues earlier in the month and had asked to see a doctor following his race at Watkins Glen International on May 10.
"Can somebody try to find Bill Heisel? He's the kindred doctor guy," he inquired about a radio broadcast that FOX published on X: NASCAR. "Tell him I need him after the race, please."
He also mentioned that he was "gonna need a shot," but he did not specify what kind of injection.
Regarding Busch's legacy, his colleague Ricky Stenhouse Jr. stated that his racing career would always be remembered.
"I've raced against Kyle for a long time, and anyone who's lined up next to him knows exactly what made him special," on X, he remarked. "He gave you everything he had, every single lap, and he made all of us better for it."
