Why JoJo Siwa Felt Compelled to Publicly Identify as a Lesbian Long Before Her Relationship with Chris Hughes.

JoJo Siwa in her new relationship with Chris Hughes, the Dance Moms alumna, who came out as a lesbian in 2021 but now identifies as queer, talked about the influence the public had on her coming out process and her need to categorize herself.

"When I came out at 17, I said, 'I’m pansexual, because I don’t care,'" JoJo stated in a June 20 interview with The Daily Mail. "But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said, 'I’m a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of the pressure."

The 22-year-old cited a number of sources, including the LGBTQ community as a whole, as the source of that pressure.

"In a weird way, I think it came a little bit from inside the community at times," she thought. "From people I know, from partners I’ve had. You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian,' you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid."

JoJo's remarks, in fact, follow her clarification two months ago on Celebrity Big Brother UK that she now identifies as queer and her subsequent explanation of why the name seems appropriate for her.

“I think the most beautiful term now is queer,” she exclusively clarified earlier this month. “I think queer is an umbrella of, ‘Look, I'm just me.’ And I think the most beautiful thing about the LGBTQIA community is love is love. And that goes both ways.”

“I feel so in the right position for myself. I feel so content with my happiness,” JoJo addressed. “I feel so relaxed and at ease with where I'm at. I feel so happy and peaceful that the love that I feel is so real. You can't really help who you fall in love with.”

Her growing relationship with Chris, 32, whom the All My Friends Are Dead actress met while competing on the British reality show, is also providing her calm.

“I just feel pure, and I feel joyous, and I don't feel like I have to give off any sort of energy. I just radiate right now,” she exclaimed. “I am the most put together that I've ever been.”

"'Serendipity' is a lovely way to describe it, because it appeared when I least expected it to," JoJo concluded.
