In collaboration with Microsoft, Data.org has launched the Generative AI Skills Challenge, a global grant program to educate and empower teams in generative AI to create a positive societal impact.

The Challenge’s primary focus is on promoting digital inclusion, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and underserved communities, by prioritizing equitable and community-driven integration. The initiative aims to accelerate digital inclusion, boost socioeconomic mobility, and foster skill development among workers.

Microsoft will be providing funding for the Generative AI Skills Grant Challenge, and multiple organizations are expected to receive awards as part of this initiative. The program is geared towards fostering meaningful advancements in the field of generative AI while ensuring that the benefits reach diverse and marginalized populations.

Nnamdi Kanu Releases A Hand-written Letter, Declares End to Sit-At-Home in Southeast Nigeria

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has directed, through a handwritten note, that all Sit-At-Home exercises in the Southeast be stopped effective immediately.

The handwritten letter was read by Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, to journalists during a world press conference, held in Enugu State on Friday.

The Southeast has been grappling with incessant sit-at-home orders, including the (traditional) Monday’s sit-at-home, which has significantly impacted economic activities in the region, since Kanu was arrested and detained by the Nigerian government. The sit-at-home is a form of protest deployed to force the government to free the IPOB leader.

However, it has from its inception, escalated into dreaded violence that has resulted in killing and maiming in the Southeast, as armed enforcers of the order rove about shutting down markets and businesses who failed to comply.

According to reports, micro-businesses in the Southeast have wasted 71 Mondays between August 9, 2021, and December 19, 2022, to the exercise, losing N5.375 trillion ($12.215 billion) in the process.

Recently, the sit-at-home enforcement has been sustained by orders from Simon Ekpa, a disciple of Kanu and the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile. Efforts by affected state governments to end it have failed.

However, in his letter dated July 24, 2023, Kanu ordered Ekpa to desist from calling for further sit-at-home. Kanu also directed Ejimakor “to make a public announcement to the effect that he (Mazi Simon Ekpa) is in receipt of a direct order from him (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) to cancel any pending Sit-at-Home in place at the moment”.

The full statement reads:

“This Public Announcement bears (as shall be reproduced below) the unedited, verbatim Instructions containing a Direct Order personally issued by MAZI NNAMDI KANU in his own handwriting on 24th July, 2023 through me to MAZI SIMON EKPA, instructing him to ‘desist from calling for any Sit-at-Home henceforth’ and ‘to make a public announcement to the effect that he (Mazi Simon Ekpa) is in receipt of a direct order from him (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) to cancel any pending Sit-at-Home in place at the moment’; and also that he (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) has, by the same order, ‘authorized me to issue a press statement if he (Mazi Simon Ekpa) fails to make this announcement on his platform’.

“For avoidance of doubt, this Direct Order was personally handed to me by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu when I visited him on the said 24th July, 2023 at the headquarters of the Department of State Security (DSS), Abuja. Later that day, I tried to contact Mazi Simon Ekpa via his WhatsApp number but could not reach him until 1:44AMthe following day (25th July, 2023), whereupon I snapped the Direct Order as written and sent to him. He thereafter acknowledged receipt and we spoke briefly on it and exchanged a couple text messages thereof.

“Since that early 25th July, 2023 (when I conveyed the Order to Mazi EKPA and he duly acknowledged it, he has not implemented the Order or otherwise made such announcement on his media platform. Nonetheless, I made a conscious decision to give him the benefit of doubt and thereby accord him more time to do the needful.

“Then, late yesterday, further written Instructions was issued by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to me, referring to the extant Direct Order to Mazi Ekpa and, in addition, instructing me that given that Mazi Ekpa has not carried out the Order, I must, as of today, being 28th July 2023, proceed to make the Order public through a Public Announcement/ Press Statement. In the said further Instructions, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu added more pertinent details and instructed that I must equally make them public.

“Accordingly, and as of Counsel, bound by duty and the solemn oath of my noble profession to faithfully and zealously implement my Client’s clear Instructions without any fear or favor, I now therefore reproduce verbatim the contents of said Direct Order to Mazi Simon Ekpa (at the first Paragraph) and the related further Instructions (from the second Paragraph to the end), as follows:

“Simon, this is a direct order from me. I hereby instruct you to desist from calling for any Sit-at-Home henceforth. Equally refrain from antagonizing Governors or persons in political positions because you are not in a position to know what they are doing on my behalf. I am ordering you to make a public announcement to the effect that you are in receipt of a direct order from me to cancel any pending Sit-at-Home in place at the moment. I embarked on this movement to liberate our people not to enslave them. I despise and will despise any person or entity that wishes to inflict unnecessary hardship on our people. I have authorized Aloy to issue a press statement if you fail to make this announcement on your platform.

“Anybody still engaging in Sit-at-Home is not my disciple. Haters of Biafra and mindless murderers in uniform are hiding under the cover of combating enforcers of Sit-at-Home to unleash mayhem against the same people we swore to defend.

“I have sent countless messages to those purportedly enforcing Sit-at-Home that they are not doing so in my name. I am not begging anybody to release me just that Nigeria should have the decency to obey their own laws.

“The main issue which our people should address their minds to is the unconscionable delays in hearing the government appeal at the Supreme Court, which is a situation not amenable to any Sit-at-Home. Therefore Sit-at-Home is a waste of time, resources and energy.

“Those who may not understand the genesis of the Sit-at-Home should refer to my younger brother’s press statement on the eve of the commencement of the original order issued by the IPOB family. My brother made it clear to the DOS that I was against the order for people to stay at home under whatever guise. This caused a rift between my siblings and DOS till date.

“Aloy should use the above contributions to form the main body of the press statement. I want our people to know how this whole sit-at-home brouhaha started. Had DOS obeyed my direct instructions to cancel the first Monday sit-at-home, opportunistic scavengers would not have jumped on the bandwagon to wreak havoc on our people I want our people to know how this whole Sit-at-Home brouhaha started. PwC Forecasts Lower Revenue, Higher Operation Costs for Nigerian Businesses Due to Subsidy and FX Reforms

PricewaterhouseCoopers Nigeria (PWC) has projected increased challenges for Nigerian businesses due to recent fuel subsidy and forex reforms by the government.

In its 2023 economic report dubbed ‘Nigeria Economic Outlook’, analysts at the multinational financial firm said businesses should brace up for higher costs of operation and lower revenue as the impact of fuel subsidy removal and floating of the forex market takes a toll on consumer spending.

“Consumer spending may be adversely impacted by the elevated inflation rate (food 25.3% and core inflation 20.3% rates) and fuel price (140% increase after subsidy removal), the report said.

“Business revenues may decline in the short-term mainly due to direct impact input costs and reduction in disposable incomes.

“Rise in energy, food, transportation, and import costs may dampen consumer spending on non-discretionary items.”

The firm highlighted areas where the increase is expected, driven by the jump in FX rates as well as rising transportation costs.

Naira floating is expected to drive up the cost of imported raw materials. The naira value since the implementation of the policy has ranged between N472-N771/$ from an average of N463/$ in May before the policy announcement, it said.

PwC further noted that the general rise in prices due to the removal of [fuel] subsidy may have a trickledown effect on the various SG&A expenses such as marketing, logistics, utilities, etc.

Also, given the increase in the MPR rate to 18.5% in July 2023 by 25 basis points, the cost of borrowing naira is expected to remain elevated.

“Finance costs [are] to increase due to exchange rate losses from higher interest payments incurred on exposure to foreign currency denominated loans,” the report said. “These losses are on account of the currency devaluation.”

PwC noted that although the increases may have a negative impact, they could provide incentives to corporates to explore local sourcing or backward integration in the medium term.

The report said that economic reforms, including FX market liberalization, have the potential to attract foreign investments and drive capital inflows in the long term.

However, in the short run, investors may take a cautious “wait-and-see” stance, possibly due to the lack of additional reforms aimed at bolstering business and economic fundamentals.

Furthermore, the report predicts that an increase in inflation could lead to a reduction in real yields or returns on investments.

To optimize costs across value chains, companies should conduct thorough analyses across the value chain. For overhead costs, they should examine benefits versus pay and consider greater segmentation of rewards, implement a hiring freeze, and improve the visibility of non-payroll expenses.

Streamlining organization design to eliminate duplication and reprioritizing non-core work are also crucial. In brand marketing, a marketing audit should be conducted to enhance cost transparency, and marketing campaigns with high ROI should be prioritized while managing supply issues by reducing promotion frequency without compromising depth.

Lastly, in total supply chains, identifying alternative sourcing locations to minimize risk and cost, aligning procurement across business divisions, and optimizing spending through global and local deals are essential actions.

The image of Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria looking all pathetic; holding a king-size King James Version Bible like an RCCG pastor and wearing a white jalabiya like an Imam and been supported and hand-led to the court by a woman who we later identified to be the court registrar so he won’t fall off the last time he was arraigned in court is yet to leave my head, I doubt if it will ever leave my memory. 

How the mighty had fallen. Who would ever believe that Godwin Emefiele will ever find himself in this situation; even the best of the seers could never have predicted this. 

Godwin Emefiele was one of Nigeria’s most powerful men just a few weeks back. In fact, he was the most powerful man in the financial sector in Nigeria. That made him power drunk and to some greater extent, he abused his power; took some arbitrary decision that suffered the masses, froze numerous bank accounts, and crippled some startups. I can still remember him while he was in his prime boasting and threatening AbokiFx CEO to come and fight him just a few months back. What was Aboki Fx’s offense? Aboki FX was posting and updating foreign exchange values and rates on the black market. Should we mention that Emefiele harassing and crippling Aboki Fx did not solve the foreign exchange disparity in prices problem.

This is one of the things that come with power, politics and governance, once your tenure elapses, you are stripped of every immunity that was shielding you and the people that have been lining up to deal with you will activate their furry against you in full scale and those that were egging you on while you were in your prime will all disappear. Now they have reduced Mr Emefiele to a mere local tout, he is a shadow of himself now and you can only recognize him by his bald head.

Interestingly, nobody unless his immediate friends and family are really speaking up against his ordeal because he was a public enemy through some of the policies he initiated while he was at the helm of power at the CBN.

Godwin Emefiele really abused his power as the CBN governor and at best his ordeal can be seen as his recompense. Despite that, this is just a political witch hunt as he committed no crime, he was only discharging his duties as the governor of the apex bank, although he went to the extreme, but he was still within the bounds of his statutory duties hence why the State Security Services after over a month of detaining him found nothing on him to charge him with other than illegal possession of firearms, now they want to add funding terrorism charges to his crime. I can wish that the law takes its due course and also wish the former governor well. 

The lesson in this is that Godwin Emefiele’s case should be an awakening to political officeholders and a reminder that power is but temporary; so be careful of what you do and the toes you step on while you wield that power, people may come after you when you leave power and no longer have an immunity to shield you.
