Machine Learning Or Operation Research. Which Is Better?

0

Modern problems need modern solutions. It usually takes lots of time and effort. Sometimes wasting a week and not having the right solution is the best option. Of course, people will get stressed and mad. To remove stress, try to Vave login during some breaks.

Machine learning and operations research are two sophisticated advanced analytics technologies used in a wide range of solutions. And you need to know the specifics of each in order to correctly apply it in each of the business sectors.

Machine Learning (ML)

Machine learning is a tool with which you can find patterns in the input data and thus solve the problem. This technology is most successfully used in tasks where it is necessary to predict something. Such historical data is best suited for this, in which the algorithm finds a certain logic or pattern. ML is used in many industries, from medicine to different industries. It can be found in medicine. ML helps to recognize diseases based on the results of the ultrasound, X-ray, or MRI. Or with the help of this technology, mineral deposits are found.

Operations Research (OR)

Operations research activities aimed at the mathematical modeling of processes and the search for optimal solutions. This approach has long been used abroad. It is mainly used in large manufacturing companies, where a small change of one percent can bring a significant effect. This can be an optimization. With the help of OR there can be found the distribution of applications by a logistics company. It can save both the time of specialists and the costs of transport management. Or you can find the use of it in fertilizer production. The OR-based solution can respond faster to market changes and plan fertilizer production without manual calculations.

Main differences

In short, using ML, you can identify parameters and dependencies. But only OR will tell you the optimal solution. Here are three more differences. There are three types of analytics.

Descriptive. It gives an idea of what happened in the past or is happening in the present.

Predictive. This allows you to predict what to expect in the future.

Prescriptive. It helps you decide what needs to be done to achieve your business goals.

The fact is that ML is a predictive analytics tool with which you can process huge amounts of data and learn from them. The end result of machine learning work is a prediction that can be used to make a decision.

And OR refers to prescriptive analytics. It is used in a mathematical model. Such a model lists all the constraints of the process that you want to minimize or maximize,

and solve this model. The result of this approach will not be a forecast, but an optimal solution based on the available data and the input problem.

That is, with the help of machine learning, you can get a forecast for the next quarter’s sales. But with the help of operations research, you will learn what exactly needs to be improved in production in order to maximize the next quarter’s revenue.

Applications

We experience the impact of machine learning in everyday life. We love using speech and image recognition in a smartphone, and virtual assistants.

Operations research is widely used in various business areas to solve large-scale problems. It is used in production planning, staff scheduling, cargo routing, or distribution of goods or electricity.

The difference is that ML-based products are more consumer-oriented. Therefore, they are more popular and understandable. While OR-based tools are less visible. Because they are used primarily in business.

Adaptability

Both technologies work differently in the face of sudden changes. For example, if something suddenly changes in the operating environment, machine learning applications based on historical data may produce a less accurate forecast.

We saw this in 2019 during the pandemic. The demand for personal care products soared. It left the shelves in stores empty. So the companies were not immediately able to readjust to the new realities.

In the case of services based on OR, the situation is different. Since it uses a detailed mathematical model of the process, the data can be replaced with actual ones. And the result will correspond to the changed conditions.

In the airline industry, due to changing weather conditions or the need for maintenance, schedule disruptions often occur. Air France used mathematical optimization to schedule flights in such a way. Its flight delays and operating costs are significantly reduced.

Combined Approach

Definitely, a company can get a lot of benefits from a combination of ML and OR. For example, a mathematical model for decision-making can be enriched with a forecasting model. Then the decision will be even more optimal and balanced. Or take the optimization of the production schedule. Which we have already talked about.

You can create an ML model. It will take into account historical data and predict demand depending on the season and other factors. After, create an OR model. It will produce the optimal schedule for the production of products. So the combination of the costs of creation and storage, taking into account consumption, will be minimal. And many companies are already using this combined approach.

Amazon, for example, combines big data, machine learning, and operations research to optimize logistics. Google Maps uses ML to predict future traffic and OR to suggest the best path to a destination.

ML or OR?

Take off from the task. Machine learning and operations research fit different types of problems. Technologies using ML will help you predict something or draw a conclusion based on a lot of data. Predict consumer demand or diagnose equipment. And operations research will help you quickly make the best of many possible decisions. For example, to optimize the operation of transport or to allocate resources.

Pay attention to the data. For ML, high data quality is very important. The result directly depends on this. In the case of OR, a thorough knowledge of internal processes and the ability to build a mathematical model are important. The work of representatives of the departments involved in the processes. Also, the work of analysts and mathematicians is especially important here.

Focus on the result you want to get from technology. ML reveals parameters and dependencies. But the final decision on them is made by a person. OR gives the most optimal solution. It makes it clear what needs to be done to improve processes.

Use the power of synergy, or you don’t have to pick just one. Both of these technologies are not mutually exclusive, but complementary. They can be combined and create powerful services to solve the strategic and operational goals of the company.

Official vehicles are for official use – Case of Abia State Governor Son

0

There is a video that has been trending since last weekend on the Nigerian social media space. It is a video of a 21-year-old son of the governor of Abia state, Mr Okezie Ikpeazu driving in the governor’s convoy and using the governor’s official fleet to attend an occasion.

Those that rose to the defence of the lad and his dad, the governor stated that the boy was sent by the dad to represent him in a function hence why he was ridden in the official convoy of the governor.

Those defending the action of the son of the governor making use of the governor’s official fleet in the name that he was sent by the governor to represent him in a function should know that a seating governor in his official capacity cannot, in any shape or form be represented by his son or daughter or any other person whomsoever, not even his wife,  in any gathering except that the person is directly given an official position or officially appointed into the cabinet and that is the protocol.

Wife or children of a governor using state-owned resources or making use of the official properties of the government is an abuse of power. The state elected the governor and did not elect his wife or the children.

Our law did not recognize or make provision for the office of the wife of the governor or the office of the children of the governor neither was there a provision for the office of the wife of the president or the office of the children of the president.

Governor’s son is not a title neither is the wife of a governor a title. This should be an eye opener to all and sundry that the purported office of the First Lady or office of the wife of the president or wife of the governor is just a caricature and merely ceremonial as nowhere in our laws is that provision made.

The act of Nigerian officeholders allowing their wards to use state properties for their private business is totally wrong and abusive of the office the officer occupies.

It is more like a norm in Nigeria; almost every political office holder in Nigeria is guilty of this act; starting from the president to the least public office holder. The president has been seen letting one of his aides ride on a presidential jet to attend a private occasion.

Government properties are to be used for government functions only and only to be used by officials whose such properties are handed over to by the reason of the offices they occupy. Your official car as a senior public office holder is for official duties and business and should never be used for your private business. That is why in some offices, once your tenure has elapsed, you are expected to give up and return official properties in your possession because they do not belong to you.

Government properties that were given to a person for the discharge of his official duties should never be used for private business nor should it be used by the officer’s family members, aides or friends; that amounts to abuse of office and waste of taxpayers’ money.

E-Commerce Giant Amazon Launches Freight Service Air in India

0

E-commerce company Amazon in a bid to hasten its deliveries has launched a dedicated air cargo fleet in India called “Amazon Air”.

Amazon partnered with Bengaluru-based cargo airline Quickjet to launch its maiden air freight in the country, which it disclosed will enable the firm to be quicker in the delivery of goods.

Reports disclose that Amazon, which is currently making use of the Boeing 737-800, launched in India as it seeks to enhance its deliveries due to tough competition it is facing from Walmart-owned Flipkart.

The company’s launch of Cargo fleet in India makes the country the third in the world to get an air freight facility, which will deliver goods to cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Amazon first launched its freight service in 2016 with the U.S. market, before it eventually launched in the U.K., thus making India the third country.

An executive at the company described the launch of Amazon air as a huge step forward for the aviation industry without explaining how.

Also, speaking about the launch of freight services in India, Vice President of Customer Fulfilment Operations, APAC, MENA & LATAM, Amazon Akhil Saxena said,

“This marks a very important step for our sellers and our customers, as well as a huge step forward for the aviation industry. We are celebrating a significant milestone in our global mission to transform the future of logistics.

“Over the last few years, we have taken many positive steps to build our fulfillment, transportation, and logistics infrastructure in the country.

“We continue to invest in speed. We have invested in delivery infrastructure to strengthen the delivery network. Today, we are launching Amazon Air.

Taking note of the firm’s network of fulfillment centers which is spread over 50 locations across the length and breadth of the country, he said, “This will help ship goods faster from our fulfillment centers to last-mile deliveries.

It would be recalled that last year, Amazon made certain notable movements in India where it opened up its transportation and logistics services to third-party merchants, enabling the firm’s shipping arm to deliver various non-Amazon products.

As a result, this saw it become a major competitor to delivery giants in the country. Following the launch of its Amazon air, it will further support 1.1 million sellers in India, thus enabling growth for ancillary businesses such as transportation and packaging.

Amazon Air which was launched in 2016, has continued to see Amazon invest hundreds of millions of dollars in air logistics capabilities. While continuing to expand globally to meet the needs of its growing customer base, Amazon air has also invested in environmentally-conscious solutions to power its network.

Meanwhile, the e-commerce giant plans to cut a massive number of 18,000 jobs, as it continues to strategize to navigate the economic downturn. Also, the company has revealed plans to discontinue its charity donation program, AmazonSmile amid a worsening economic outlook.

The company on its website disclosed that it will shut down the program on February  20, 2023, while noting that after almost a decade, the AmazonSmile program has not grown to create the impact it had originally hoped for.

The company’s net income for the third quarter of 2022 fell 15% to $2.9 billion, compared with $3.2 billion for the same period a year earlier.

Indian Billionaire Industrialist Gautam Adani Reveals Addiction to AI Tool Chat GPT

0

Indian billionaire and founder of the Adani group, Gautam Adani, has revealed his addiction to the open AI tool ChatGPT.

The billionaire industrialist in a LinkedIn Post last week  lauded the AI tool ChatGPT for its transformational moment in the democratization of AI tools, given its astounding capabilities as well as comical failures.

He wrote on LinkedIn,

The recent release of ChatGPT (I must admit to some addiction since I started using it) is a transformational moment in the democratization of AI given its astounding capabilities as well as comical failures. But there can be no doubt that the generative AI will have massive ramifications”.

He further disclosed that Generative AI holds the same potential and danger as silicon chips, with China outnumbering the U.S. in the number of most-cited scientific papers on AI.

Launched on November 30, 2022, the ChatGPT created by San Francisco-based OpenAI, was initially free to the public with plans to monetize the service later. By December 4, OpenAI estimated ChatGPT already had over one million users.

The AI tool which can turn prompts into essays, images, stories, etc, has sparked conversations about how it could replace artists, coders, and tutors and possibly put them out of their jobs.

Also, analysts and pundits predict that Open AI’s new ChatGPT would bring everything from the “death of the school essay” to the dawn of new communication.

They also disclosed that the tool could pose a severe challenge to democracy because it means that the cost of creating misinformation would be insanely low, such that it’s going to be nearly impossible for people to detect AI-Created content.

Signaling the potential of the controversial Chatbot, according to a new research paper, the new artificial intelligence system ChatGPT has passed an exam at the Wharton Business school.

Research from Wharton Professor Christian Terwiesch disclosed that the AI system has shown a remarkable ability to automate some of the skills of highly compensated knowledge workers in general and specifically the knowledge workers in the jobs held by MBA graduates including Analysts, Managers, and consultants.

On the final exam of operations management, a core course in the Wharton MBA program, ChatGPT did an amazing job and gave answers that were correct and excellent in their explanations.

Meanwhile, the AI tool has been disclosed to have certain limitations such that the system does not think and is incapable of coming up with original ideas, as it only works by mimicking human language, packing the potential to make writing tasks quicker and easier in a way never seen before.

APC, PDP Call for Arrest, Prosecution of Their Respective Presidential Candidates Over Fraud

0

Nigeria’s presidential election campaign has taken a new turn between the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with the duo seeking the disqualification of their respective candidates over their involvement in different crimes.

Last week, the spokesman for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, filed a writ of summons at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the PDP’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, over allegations of corruption.

In the suit, Keyamo, who named the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants respectively, is asking the court to compel the included government agencies to investigate, invite and or arrest Atiku Abubakar.

The suit was based on allegations made by one Michael Achimugu, a former aide of Atiku, who in the past few weeks divulged through a video circulated online, that the PDP’s presidential aspirant was involved in a series of corrupt practices whilst in office as the Vice President of Nigeria. Achimugu said Atiku used proxies, including a certain bank belonging to a company named Marine Float and other accounts of two undisclosed companies as special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to embezzle public funds.

Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said he had obtained the certified true copy of the said affidavit, which he is counting on to push the suit. Based on this, the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Organization on Monday had called for the arrest and prosecution of the former vice president for stealing public funds while in office.

In response to APC’s call for Atiku’s arrest, the PDP has asked Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, EFCC, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to arrest and prosecute the APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for series of crimes that include money laundering, embezzlement of public funds and drug trafficking.

Tinubu’s 1993 money laundering and drug-related case was exposed by investigative journalist David Hundeyin last year, and it has become a subject of discussion as the presidential election draws nigh.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council said the cases surrounding Tinubu, especially the drug trafficking, is now a matter of national concern.

“In the unfortunate event of a Bola Tinubu Presidency, Nigerians will be plunged into a drug crisis that would make the Colombia situation a child’s play. With easy access to drugs, there will be an increase in violence.

“Nigeria is battling many problems at the moment…It will be a huge disaster to add state sponsored drug trafficking into the mix,” the PDP said.

Tinubu’s drug trafficking record was amplified after the certified true copy of his case with the US authorities was released last year. Based on this, the PDP called on the NDLEA to arrest the APC’s presidential Candidate, who had to forfeit $460,000 to US authorities.

“Nigerian law is clear, Criminal cases have no statute of limitation and can be re-opened at any time especially for the sake of national interest.”

“We hereby call on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to immediately arrest Bola Ahmed Tinubu and prosecute him for drug trafficking,” the party said.

Besides drug trafficking, the PDP is also accusing Tinubu of using Alpha Beta to embezzle Lagos State funds. The party also said that the former Lagos State governor has cases to answer regarding his identity, age and the schools he attended, describing them as fraudulent.

The PDP quoted from the lawsuit filed against Tinubu by his business associate, Dapo Apara, who was the former managing director of Alpha Beta Consulting. The party said the former governor breached the Code of Conduct for Public Officers when he established Alpha Beta.

“In the writ of summons marked LD/7330GCMW/2020, Apara narrated how Alpha Beta was formed in 2002 when Tinubu was still the governor, in breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

“Apara noted that he was the one who came up with the idea of a consulting firm helping the state government to collect taxes. He said Tinubu accepted the proposal but gave many conditions including that his own people would own 70 per cent stakes in the company. Apara said Tinubu nominated Adegboyega Oyetola (later governor of Osun State) and one Olumide Ogunmola who would hold 70% of the shares of Alpha Beta.

“Apara stated that Tinubu as a sitting governor in 2002, controlled Alpha Beta which was receiving 10 per cent of tax collected on behalf of the state,” the PDP said in the statement.

The party added that handing over the keys of Nigeria’s treasury to a man like Tinubu or giving him the full control of the NDLEA, the EFCC, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force, “will be the worst scandal in the history of mankind.”

The government agencies petitioned by the political parties over their respective presidential candidates are yet to respond. However, the development has fueled conservation among Nigerians on who among the presidential aspirants should be trusted with the country’s resources as president.

A large section of electorates, pointing out that both the anti-graft and drug agencies have not received any petition against Peter Obi, believe the Labour Party’s candidate is Nigeria’s best option for the March 23 presidential poll.
