The Essence of Computing in Workplaces

0
Team at work

Computing is indeed the best way a job could be swiftly and aptly carried out in a workplace. Hence, its essence in the contemporary global society is inevitable.

By the above assertion, it suffices to say that any establishment that’s yet to appreciate the essence of computing, or Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in particular, is still lagging behind.

In recent years, computing has evolved into more complicated and more advanced processes such as quantum computing and quantum sensing. Computing is simply the activity of using a computer and writing programs for it. It can further be described as any goal-oriented activity that requires as well as benefits from a mathematical sequence known as algorithm, through the use of systems (computers) among other devices alike.

It’s noteworthy that the major fields that involve computing include: Computer science, System engineering, Software engineering, and Information technology.

Computing – particularly Information Technology (IT) as it’s fondly called – has become a veritable and integral part of every business plan coupled with day-to-day office work. From multinational firms who maintain mainframe systems and databases, to small establishments that own a single computer, IT obviously plays a key role.

The impact of computing on everyday activity in the office is so vast. Adequate use of computing can enable any firm, regardless of size or status, to handle its human resources effectively. A sound computing would enable the firm to boast of a viable and reliable database of the overall staff alongside their designations.

It would also help the company to update the database in terms of death rate, employment, transfer, maternity leave, or what have you. By doing so, the establishment would invariably realize the worth of its workforce towards boosting efficiency and job control. The human resources of Imo State or Nigeria at large, for example, can only be aptly handled via computing.

Similarly, with a proper use of computing, the employment process would be carried out expressly by the human resources department. With IT, also known as information systems, job seekers can apply without getting to the firm/office involved, thereby avoiding foreseen congestion that could compound office stress or workload.

And, having applied, the various applicants can be easily and properly assessed via the use of computing. We must acknowledge that the manual system of interview is no longer in vogue if we intend to get it right, especially in the area of Aptitude Test.

Management coupled with communication among the staff or between the existing branches of an establishment cannot be overlooked while discussing the essence of computing. Part of management is gathering and disseminating information, and IT can make this routine more accurate by allowing managers to communicate rapidly.

Emailing is quick and effective, but the managers can use information systems even more efficiently by storing documents in folders that they share with the employees who need the information. Such activity can be aided with adequate use of networking systems.

Furthermore, how you manage your firm’s operations depends on the information you have. Information systems can offer more complete and recent info, allowing you to operate your firm/office more efficiently. You can use IT to gain a cost advantage over competitors, or to differentiate your firm’s content by offering better customer service.

For instance, sales’ data give you insights about what customers are purchasing and let you stock or produce items that are selling well. Hence, with guidance from the IT, you can streamline your operations. Additionally, apt use of IT would enable the firm to easily reach out to the public via advertisement, thereby boosting sales or services, as the case may be.

Computing can equally help you make excellent decisions by delivering all the required information. Decision-making involves choosing a course of action from several alternatives and carrying out the corresponding tasks. If you can boast of accurate and up-to-date info, you can make a choice with confidence.

If more than one choice seems appealing, you can use the available information system to x-ray different scenarios. For each possibility, the system can calculate key indicators such as costs, sales/services, and profits, toward helping you determine which channel gives the most beneficial result.

Record purposes are not left out. Your establishment needs records of its daily activities for financial and regulatory purposes, and for ascertaining the causes of problems towards taking corrective measures. Computing enables the firm to store the needed documents as well as revisit histories, communication records, and operational data.

The trick to exploiting this recording capability is organizing the data and using the system to process and present it as useful historical information. You can use such information to prepare cost estimates and forecasts, and to analyze how your actions affected the key indicators of the firm.

Even in our virtually every day private lives and activities, computing or IT has apparently become inevitable. This is to say that the mechanism embedded in the said technology is presently needed in all sectors of human endeavour.

In spite of the astonishing positive role of computing in various formal settings, as well as our individual lives, it’s very ridiculous that several establishments or parastatals across the Nigerian society are yet to embrace the routine.

To this end, governments at all levels and other relevant stakeholders are expected to make investors and public servants see the services of computing as priority with a view to embracing a society where every activity would be done with ease, and in an orderly manner.

Existing entities and individuals must be made to fully acknowledge that computing is gradually overtaking the ancient use of manual gadgets especially in the areas of research, networking, finances and what have you. Hence, it’s high time it is duly inculcated in all our professional doings.

However, though the roles of computing in office works can’t be overemphasized, it’s worth noting that a wrong use or application of it can cost the user an untold loss. Thus, every establishment enjoying the services must endeavour to regularly consult professionals as well as train its staff on various computer/IT skills.

Though the role of computing in the present days’ society remains inevitable, its wrong application ought to be seriously avoided.

This is the application utility era in Africa, and more sectors will move digital. Providing secure payment infrastructures and systems will be catalytic for that redesign. Why? At the heart of the entrepreneurial cambrian moment, payment will remain the operating system since everyone will like to be paid, securely.

— The Press Release

Pan-African digital payment and commerce solution company, Interswitch Group, today launched an array of innovative product offerings expected to boost the payment industry in Nigeria. The new products will simplify digital payments and provide more secure payment solutions to financial institutions, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), merchants and their customers. The launch event, Interswitch TechConnect, was held at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The services unveiled include an enhanced Biometrics feature for Point of Sale (PoS) terminals & Automated Teller Machines (ATMs); Tokenization, and Card Fusion, with the services addressing digital payment fraud, problems with card issuance and portfolio management.

Interswitch, in collaboration with SterlingPRO, designed the Biometrics on Point of Sale (PoS) and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to protect customers against digital payment fraud and to avail them faster and more convenient ways to validate payments. The solution utilizes physiological features unique to everyone such as fingerprints, voice, and facial features to verify payment transactions.

Tokenization on the other hand replaces sensitive data such as the 16-digit account information with a unique digital identifier known as a token. Tokenization will enable merchants fast-track and collect payment seamlessly, enabling customers check out faster in-store, in-app and online.

In addition, Card Fusion is a web-based instant card issuance platform that enables banks to conclude new card production requests and issue cards within a very short time, thus enhancing their customers’ experience while customers get to personalize their cards instantly.

With the launch of these three offerings, customers can now carry out transactions faster and are assured of more secure payment platforms, while banks, merchants and business owners can fast-track and collect payments seamlessly.

Akeem Lawal, the Managing Director, Payment Processing & Switching (Interswitch Purepay), stated that the company will continue to build cutting-edge solutions to enhance business development and provide seamless payment solutions to customers across the African continent.

He noted that the three services were designed to address prevailing issues within the digital payment value chain.

He said, “Interswitch is redefining the payment landscape in Nigeria, therefore we are committed to enabling the payment ecosystem that will drive the growth of businesses for economic prosperity. We designed the Biometrics on POS & ATM to heighten customers’ protection from digital payment fraud. The Will Smith and Bianca Ojukwu Slaps

0

If you cheered Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu on for slapping Mrs. Ebelchukwu Obiano and now condemning Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock, then you are a hypocrite, and you are one of the things wrong with the society. It is totally hypocritical to support one slapper and condemn the other slapper.

You cannot support one and frown against the other. Let us all agree that both actions are wrong, crude, unlawful, and a jailable offense, it doesn’t matter in which society it happened or who was the slapper, or who was at the receiving end of the slap.

Those calling for Will Smith’s apology should as well bring it home and call our Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu to publicly apologize to not just Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano but the entire public for engaging in such a demeaning action and disrupting a good and ceremonial day with an unceremonious slap.

I’m aware that in Bianca/ Ebelechukwu’s case, the evidence proved that Ebelechukwu asked for it by first approaching the seat of Mrs. Ojukwu and engaging her in a verbal brawl but whatever the action or grievances are, you cannot and should not physically attack or assault another person unless you are physically attacked first. The defense of personal defense can only avail you in law if the other person physically attacked you first and for this defense to avail you, your retaliatory physical attack must be proportional or in proportionate measure to the prior attack you are reacting to.

Therefore, a person cannot verbally abuse you or slander you and you react with a fist and physical assault claiming you have a defense, the law does not work that way and he who wants equity must do equity and whoever is coming to equity must approach the equity palace with a clean hand.

When highly placed individuals who ought to know better engage in the public display of tomfoolery and public show of crudeness and shenanigan then you will be forced to wonder where the society is heading; if the society is heading back to its natural state where the big and powerful feast on small at will and jungle justice is the only justice available to man.

The problem with actions like these in the aftermath of it on society. If it is not sternly punished to deter others from doing it then slapping or physically assaulting people at the slightest opportunity or provocation will become the order of the day. Predictably, some netizens are already sending mild threats and calling out some people asking them to be careful how they address them in public henceforth if not what befell Chris Rock will befall them.

The Decamped NYSC Lady; a case study of religion clashing with societal rules

0

A female Corp member was decamped last week from the NYSC orientation camp in Gombe for her failure to abide by the stipulated camp dress code and ethics, and some people have been clamoring that it fringes on her fundamental right of religion since her choice to be on that attire was based on her religious background.

The religious corp member who was decamped for wearing a long pleated skirt in the Gombe state orientation camp has become an internet sensation and has also caused a mixed reaction as to whether her not being permitted to wear whatever her religion permits her on the grounds of her religious sentiment does not conflict with her fundamental right to choose and belong to any religion of her choice as guaranteed by s.38 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

People should understand how these fundamental human rights as provided in S. 33 up till S. 44 of the constitution really work; it is never an open Cheque. Its provisions have their restrictions and limitations. The cliche that your right stops when another’s right starts is absolutely correct.

For instance, because you have the fundamental right of movement does not give you the right to trespass into another man’s property or walk into where you should not walk into in the purported exercise of your right, if you do that you are an offender and the law will come against you.

The decamped religious fanatic lady’s right to her choice of religion stops immediately she gets into the NYSC orientation camp gate and she must drop her religious sentiments at the gate and be ready to comply with the rules and regulations guiding the camp which one of it is complying with the standard and approved dress code.

Rules are to be obeyed, constituted authorities are to be respected. Anybody in disobedience of constituted laws of the land or organization is a sinner. These are not my words but the words of the holy book (the Bible) which is the handbook of rules and corrections for the Christians and the believers of Jesus Christ.

The Bible for instance says in Romans 13v1-7:

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience”.

Subsequently, 1 Peter 2:13-17 also says; “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor”.

Moreover, Hebrew 13vs 17 aptly put: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you”.

I can go on and on in quoting the scriptures and different sections of the Bible which had already admonished those that believe in it to obey constituted authorities and rules including the NYSC bye-laws, dress code, rules, and regulations, and if you go in disobedience due to your Christianity religious sentiments then you are already a sinner who is also ignorant of what your Bible says.

Schedule 2, S.1 (2) of The National Youth Service Corps Bye-laws (reprinted in the year 2000) Provides that Failure to wear the uniform provided for any particular activity in the orientation camp is an offense and the penalty is that the Corps member should be informed to go and wear the appropriate uniform if he or she then failed to obey the individual will be asked to leave the camp.

This is not the first time religious sentiment is having a huge clash with the stipulated rules of an organization. Remember in December 2017 when one Ms. Amasa Firdaus, a Muslim faithful missed her chance of getting called to the Nigerian Bar that year due to her religious sentiments of trying to dress in her Hijab for the call to bar ceremony which was totally unacceptable then.

Organizational rules can be amended to accommodate religious sentiments and cultural differences just like the Nigerian police force recently amended its dress code to accommodate some cultural differences and religious sentiments for the female police officer and also the Body of Benchers amended some of the call to bar dress code to accommodate some religious fanatics like Ms. Amasa Firdaus which allowed her to get called to the Nigerian Bar the following year but not until the rules are amended, you can either choose to stay away from the organization since it is not mandatory or you are forced to participate or join, and if you must join or participate you must be ready to comply with their rules and regulations guiding that institution.

Rules are not just made to be strict on man or to limit an individual’s freedom but rules are made to instill a sense of discipline, ensure conformity and achieve uniformity. In the NYSC orientation camp, if anybody could be allowed to wear whatever he or she likes based on any reason then there won’t be uniformity, and everywhere will be disorganized and disoriented.

NPF Rescue Me: Nigerian Police Launches An App for Emergencies

1

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has launched a new safety app dubbed NPF Rescue Me, designed to help people in Nigeria to get quick help when they’re in trouble.

The Police Public Relation Officer, Olumiyiwa Adejobi, in a series of tweets during the weekend, explains that the app was created to help the Force to respond as quickly as possible to distresses.

Nigeria is among the countries where people find it hard to get police services with a phone call, unless you’re a member of the elite or you’re connected. The app is expected to change the status quo. Adejobi said the initiative is to take policing to the grassroots and it’s free and effective.

“It’s an app, and every police formation police formation has been integrated on it and some other operational units to respond to distress,” he said.

https://twitter.com/Princemoye1/status/1508105150602399748?t=I1kvQYSnkyEgiVCuJsMdpQ&s=19

Below are the app’s six major functions published by the NPF.

Emergency Alert: At the tap of the emergency button, your alert will be automatically sent to the Nigerian Police Force command and control team, where operators will track your location with GPS and dispatch the necessary help your way.

Report Crime: The app has a report crime feature which uses a web-based dispatch system for quick help and intervention by men of the Nigerian Police Force. Users are required to press the feature button when they notice a crime is being committed or an individual’s safety is being threatened.

Navigation: The app also has a navigation feature which will pinpoint your current location and accurately guide you to your destination using GPS in case you miss your way and need a guide to ascertain your location and route.

Contact Address: With this feature, you can save the contact details of your relatives or those you’ll like to reach out to in case of an emergency at the tap of the button.

Report A Police: This feature helps users to report police officers found exhibiting discourteous behavior or acting contrary to the law. The app makes it easier to reach out to the Nigerian Police Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit. You can file a report by simply clicking on this feature on the app with an option to upload your evidence.

Request An Ambulance: This feature is spot on if you have a medical emergency or see people in medical emergencies like road accidents, and fire outbreaks. A simple tap on the request of an ambulance will get an ambulance and a medical team dispatched to your location via web-based GPS tracking.

Nigeria has many phone call-based emergency channels including the national 112 and Lagos State-owned 767.  However, the telephone-based emergency services are said to fall short of emergency needs around the country. Thus, emergency services have been prioritized so that only calls on heftier issues such as armed robbery, accidents and fire outbreaks get responses. Launching an app that broadens the chances of Nigerians getting the needed response in times of emergency marks a shift from the call-only system. Nigerians say they hope the app, which is available on app stores, is as effective as the police have described it.
