At the Oscars award held last night, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch and Javier Bardem were nominees for the academy best actor in a leading role. Chris Rock the comedian was the host and as comedian he made some jokes about Jada Pinket Smith, Will Smith’s controversial wife who was also present at the award show. The joke didn’t sit well with Will Smith who deemed it fit to leave his seat and walk up the stage and gave Chris Rock a deafening slap.
After slapping Chris Rock, he walked back to his seat with threats that Chris Rock should leave the name of Jada Pinket Smith, the wife, out of his mouth.
The show continued as if nothing happened; as if Will Smith hadn’t just assaulted his colleague over a joke. He (Will Smith) later on won the best actor academy award category for the night beating the four other nominees to clutch the award.
The action of Will Smith was crude, totally uncalled for and disappointing. There are ways to register displeasures in sane and civilized societies, if you feel what a person said triggered you or you find it offensive and insulting, you can sue for libel or slander, that is why laws are put in place to make sure there are avenues and machineries where individuals can legally seek revenge and enforce their rights.
You don’t just go assaulting people because you feel offended or triggered, when you do that you have taken the law into your hands and the law which is meant to help you and to protect you will come after you and the law will definitely be against you.
The United States of America who prides herself as a lawful and civilized society should never let this behavior of Will Smith go unpunished, because if it is pushed under the carpet without Will Smith getting punished it will reinforce bad behaviors like these. People will see that it is okay to assault another person over a joke and you can get away with it, as much as you are a celebrity.
If you feel you have been abused, slandered or insulted, why not file a proper action in court and let the jury and the judge decide that and award you damages?
Pro-Will Smith’s people, who are obviously Will Smith’s fans, are saying that Chris Rock deserves what he got but will they say the same thing if someone that got slapped over a joke happens to be their relation or friend.
The LAPD should arrest Will Smith and make it public that the society does not condone jungle justice so as to deter other individuals who are slap-happy and are currently warming up to replicate this kind of habit.
