The Jack Ma’s Move

3
Founder of Alibaba

Alibaba Group founder, Jack Ma, has retired. That is certainly not news. He had noted last year that he was going to do it. He began Alibaba, and in the process created about 11 billionaires (in dollars) including himself.  But he is out – on his own terms, to possibly go and create value on something else in the world that may not be evaluated on monetary terms. Possibly, he may do more teaching; he was a former English teacher.

Jack Ma is giving up the reins of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. after presiding over one of the most spectacular creations of wealth the world has ever seen.

The former English teacher steps down as executive chairman of China’s largest company on his 55th birthday after amassing a $41.8 billion fortune — a trove surpassed only by India’s Mukesh Ambani in Asia, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His record-breaking rise from a bootstrapped entrepreneur working out of his apartment in 1999 to jet-setting e-commerce mogul is one for the history books, mirroring China’s own evolution from technological backwater to world’s No. 2 economy.

In technology management, we talk of continuity management and succession management. In Africa, we are not necessarily so lucky in that space. Empires have failed to transition from one generation to another. Except for a few pockets like First Bank of Nigeria and Union Bank, our records are terrible. We must change that record if we want to build durable economies. Yes, these entities are unable to move from one generation to another not because of creative destructive, rather most died because there was no plan beyond the founder: empires die once founders exit.

According to Schumpeter, the “gale of creative destruction” describes the “process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one”.

As we celebrate Jack Ma going to play more golf and give money away, every African entrepreneur should learn something from him: right in his relative youth, he has already positioned Alibaba to be here after him. That is something to master in our playbooks. This retirement is an unprecedented move by Jack – capture it in your playbook.

Sure – you do not need to do it that early as Jack has done, leaving at relative youth of 55 years. My message is that you need to ensure that your company has a plan beyond the current players.

The TECNO’s Transsion 48.7% Market Share in Africa

6

This is huge – Tecno parent company, China-based Transsion Holdings, now commands 48.7% market share in Africa. Transsion’s mobile phone business in Africa is bigger than either of Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Transsion is hitting IPO in Shanghai Star Board which has been modeled after tech-heavy NASDAQ of United States. It plans to raise about $423 million. It shipped close to 95 million mobile phones to Africa in 2018.

Transsion, known as the “King of Africa” on the continent, according to the filing on Monday, has overtaken Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. as the largest mobile phone maker there, tapping into a huge and fast-growing market.

Since founding the Tecno Mobile brand in 2006, founder Zhu Zhaojiang has overseen an expansion that now claims a 48.7% market share in Africa, according to the filing. Transsion shipped 94.44 million mobile phones to Africa in 2018, out of a total of 124 million global shipments.

The company plans to issue as many as 80 million A-shares in the IPO and will set the price on Sept. 17. Proceeds will be used to pay for mobile phone manufacturing base projects and research and development, the filing said.

When Tecno came, it began from 0% market share. But by listening to local customer needs and delivering frugal innovation – great value for money – this firm has become a category-king smartphone market leader in Africa. The message is simple: nothing is set even when Apple or Samsung is involved. Yes, if you innovate, customers will converge irrespective of your initial brand positioning because brand positioning is a product of product validation. Bloomberg has called Tecno the “King of Africa” because when it comes to shipping smartphones, Tecno parent firm, Transsion, is the king today. And the company continues to innovate with the launch of  its TECNO CAMON 12 recently.

The 4 in 1 technology and mosaic algorithm enable TECNO CAMON 12 stand out from its range with high pixel and clear camera lens. The Nigeria’s Presidential Election Tribunal Fever

0

As the 11th of September beckons with uncertainties for president Muhammadu Buhari, the PDP presidential Aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, and the Nigerian people as a whole, one can only hope for the best.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), is billed to announce its verdict on the controversial presidential election that saw Muhammed Buhari elected as president. The conduct of the election has been challenged by Atiku Abubakar on the grounds that Buhari lied to the Nigerian people about his certificate and therefore should be disqualified.

Buhari had submitted a sworn affidavit claiming that his WAEC certificate is with the Nigerian Army. A claim the Nigerian Army refuted back in 2015, through a statement by its spokesman Brig. Gen. Olaleye Olajide. It was until November 2018 that WAEC presented Buhari with a certificate. A gesture that Nigerians called foul play.

It is on the ground that Buhari contravened the Electoral Act, Cap 15, 2010, sections 31(1), 2 and 5. Which mandates every Aspirant to submit at least a secondary school certificate as educational qualification that Atiku is praying the court to nullify the presidential election.

INEC is also a co-defendant with president Buhari for admitting a perjured affidavit in the place of a certificate as stipulated by the constitution. There is also the issue of alleged transmission of results to INEC servers which does not correspond with the results announced by the umpire through collation centers.

However, Nigerians are expressing mixed feelings about the judgement come September 11. The Hashtag, #AtikuIsComing has been trending, and Nigerians are using it to express their hope and fears.

A Twitter user, Mr. Stanley Nwabia wrote:

“Just have it at the back of your mind that whichever way PEPT rules, the HONOUR will be on the Judiciary and the SHAME will also be on the judiciary. Nobody can taunt you over the path you decide to follow. You’ve done your part.”

“If the knowledge that you are going to die one day, anytime does not cause you daily heartbreaks whenever you wake up from sleep every day, why must you fret over whatever PEPT rules tomorrow? Stand firm on what you belive in, be proud of your choice.

“Tomorrow’s PEPT ruling, no matter which direction it goes, will change Nigeria forever.”

Chele Olisa wrote:

Another 9/11 is upon us. We will cry or shall we smile? Will Nigerians rejoice in the justice and impeccability of the judiciary or will we weep at how they’ve been reduced to nothing? I hope and pray that this judgement won’t see technicalities,

Pierce Brosnan Says It’s Time For a Woman James Bond

0

In 1953, when Ian Fleming created James Bond and featured him in a series of 12 books and 2 short stories: it was a man, a very risk-taking masculine character with enough beards to shave at every scene, and a masculine name to suit the features that ravenously drew women to him without him blinking an eye.

That was then, 1953, before the era of gender transition and #MeToo movement that have put a question mark on masculinity and adventures associated to men.

So when the rumor started that the latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die, began with Daniel Craig, the latest James Bond Actor, (now retired) and ended with Lashana Lynch, all as James Bonds, it was not surprising to anyone following the trend. They only have to brace up for the effects of disappeared macho behavior that has lured viewers from around the world to the James Bond series for decades now.

Although no evidence apart from rumor and little leaks to suggest the authenticity, former James Bond actors believe it’s time for a woman to play the role.

Pierce Brosnan, who in his role as James Bond saved the world four times, thinks it’s time to hand the baton to a woman.

“Yes!” he said with excitement. “I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.” He said.

Daniel Craig and Chris Hemsworth notably concurred to Brosnan’s view – it’s time for a woman James Bond.

Although Brosnan acknowledged it will be difficult to effect such a change into the James Bond’s legacy, he believes it’s possible with time.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen with the broccolis. I don’t think it would happen under their watch.” He acknowledged.

He also pointed out that the #MeToo movement has become so important in our era that recognition should be giving to them through serious roles like James Bond.

But a co-star of Die Another Day, Rosamund Pike, who co-appeared with Pierce Brosnan disagreed.

“James Bond is a character that Ian Fleming created. And the character is a man. It’s a very masculine creation. Why should a woman get sort of sloppy seconds? Why should she have been a man and now has to be played by a woman? Why not be a kick-ass female agent in her own right”?

Exactly how Piers Morgan analyzed it in his column: “Don’t You Feminist Snowflakes Dare Turn James Bond into a Woman.” He urged all the pro #MeToo to create a genre and a character of a feminine gender that will be played by a woman, instead of trying to emasculate the most masculine icon in movie history.

He also warned that any such move will do more damage to James Bond legacy than good. Using the poll he conducted in his breakfast show, Good Morning Britain, where 86 percent of viewers voted “no to a woman James Bond” as an indication, he opined that the movie legacy is doomed as soon as the idea is bought. And more women will hate to watch it more than men.

The perception of many about the #MeToo movement and their yearnings is that it’s no longer about equality, it’s more about a woman taking a man’s place at all cost.

How To Boost Your Solar Business With Referrals

0

There is no doubt that boosting sales is not an easy task especially in the renewable energy business. The nature of the industry makes it almost impossible to have repeat customers within a short period of time. It takes money, patience, and effort to win over a new client since people are still hostile to change; switching to solar and other forms of sustainable energy. However, with the right strategy, your existing clients can become your ambassadors and begin to win new clients for you via word-of-mouth.

Ask yourself, would you go for a product your friends and family recommend to you or will you just buy anything randomly and hope that it works? I guess you will go by what your friends have tested and trusted. Interestingly, did you know that referral marketing results to 5x more sales than a paid media impressions and people are 90% more likely to trust and buy from a brand recommended by someone they know? With this in mind, enabling your customers to do some of the marketing should be a priority for you and your team. It saves you the stress of having to convince new leads that your systems work, you simply reassure them of what they already know.

There are probably 3 to 5 competitors within a 15 km radius vying for the same deals as you and utilizing the same advert channels, but whoever wins the referral game will ultimately make more sales with less effort. This is a no-brainer, get the consumer on your side and focus on prompt and professional service delivery.

It also comes with other benefits that include:

  • Reduction in sales and marketing budget, which allows you to channel your funds and energy towards other aspects of the business.
  • It snowballs (referrals breed more referrals). When someone makes a purchase based on a recommendation, they are more likely to recommend others too, and the cycle goes on and on.
  • It significantly increases your closing ratio. According to a renowned sales trainer, Tom Hopkins, the closing ratio for non-qualified leads is 10% versus a 60% closing ratio for qualified leads.
  • Most importantly, it serves as a pointer that you provide a tremendous service. When new clients are referred to you, it is a testament that you are reliable and trustworthy.

CAVEAT: Before you go all-in on implementing a referral strategy, think about your customer service, the quality and efficiency of your batteries, inverters, panels etc. If your customers are not satisfied with any of these, forget about referrals. As a matter of fact, expect them to discourage others from dealing with you.

Most times, you can easily get caught up with working in your business, but it pays better to work ON the business. Take the time to create an efficient referral strategy, outsource if you must. Randomly asking people to refer you is not a strategy. If results matter to you, ensure you have a system in place.
