U.S. Government To Create Internet National IDs, Says AmeriPAC

0

The Obama Administration is pushing the creation of an Internet identity scheme called the National Strategies for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace. Their plans include developing federal online identity for every American. Officials claim a national ID will reduce Internet fraud, theft, and make the Internet safer.

Howard Schmidt, the White House Cybersecurity Coordinator admitted, “It’s the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government” to centralize efforts toward creating an “identity ecosystem.”

The federally issued Internet ID (the government is calling it a Trusted Internet Identity) will effect everything you do online. If you want to…

  • Sell something on eBay
  • Check your email
  • Book an airline ticket
  • Login to your bank
  • Create a website
  • Start an online trading account
  • Surf the Internet

…You will need a “Trusted Internet Identity!” In January, a White House official said, “President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans.”

Commerce Secretary, Gary Locke has denied that the “Trusted Internet Identity” is any form of an Internet ID. Well, if you need identification from the government to conduct your online business that certainly sounds like an Internet ID. What’s next, an ID to buy a loaf of bread?  This is an adapted letter from AmeriPAC

Motorola Defy Review – A Rugged And Rich Multimedia Ready Device

0

There have been many phones released that cater to outdoorsy-type people, offering a rugged sturdiness that protect against drops, bashes and contact with large volumes of water. Devices such as the Sonim XP3 Sentinel or the Samsung E2370 have been designed to withstand all manner of tribulations that nature may throw at the hiker, rock climber or general adventurous phone user.

Catering for a niche market these phones have usually been quite noticeably lacking in other areas, providing only very basic features to enjoy. Many a rambler has lied awake at night contemplating whether or not to get a rugged, but archaic, handset, or whether to opt for a more feature rich device and risk destroying by accidentally dropping it off a cliff.

Now Motorola has solved this problem once and for all by offering up a rugged phone which has all of the desirable features of the most up to date handsets on the market. This phone does not feature a 1″ monochrome display, but a full 3.7″ capacitive touchscreen complete with Android 2.1. The Android OS is overlaid with Motorola´s Motoblur, which is the same interface to be found on many other Motorola phones of late, such as the Motorola DEXT.

The interface comes complete with access to Android Market and has full web browsing functionality thanks to the Android browser and 3G and Wi-Fi support. The phone also boasts a 5 megapixel camera, LED flash and features such as geo-tagging and video capture.

Other features include full messaging an email support, including threaded SMS messages and support for instant messaging. There is support for Google Maps, YouTube and quick and easy access to your favourite social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. For web browsing people will be pleased to hear that the Defy comes with full Adobe Flash 10.1 support.

The Defy features a rubbery case which will protect it against all sorts of knocks and jolts, and can be held under water for 10 minutes without any trouble ensuing. It may not be quite as rugged as some of the more basic rugged phones on the market, but this is pretty much the payoff for enjoying the latest features such as a touchscreen and heavy multimedia features.

Google, has acquired The Dealmap, a company that aggregates local deals. The Dealmap, founded in May 2010, does not offer deals on its own but aggregates various local ffers in one place. It grew to more than two million users during its first year.

The Dealmap is the leading source for people to find and share the best local deals, all in one place. The company indexes local deals from hundreds of sources, including national brands, daily deal websites, local businesses and consumers, and makes previously hard-to-find deals easily discoverable. The Dealmap makes local deals available to people when and where they want them, through the company’s award-winning mobile apps, its website, social applications, and daily deals email. The Dealmap showcases savings of more than $10 million available each day across multiple business categories.

The Dealmap is headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif., and is led by former Microsoft and Yahoo! executives with funding by Norwest Venture Partners and KeyNote Ventures.

“We are impressed with what The Dealmap team has accomplished and excited to welcome them to Google,” a Google spokeswoman said in a statement.

“We’ve been thrilled with the early success of our commerce offerings, and we think they can help us build even better products and services for consumers and merchants,” she said.

Google is offering local bargains in New York, Portland and San Francisco in a challenge to online discount star Groupon and the Internet giant plans to expand Google Offers to Austin, Texas, Boston, Denver, Seattle and Washington. The Dealmap will surely help in that regard. Through its DealExchange platform, The Dealmap provides tools that allow publishers and developers to easily integrate local deals into their products. The platform also gives small businesses and deal providers the ability to reach more than 85 million visitors through The Dealmap network.

“We believe Google provides the ideal platform to help us accelerate our growth and fulfill our mission,” The Dealmap said in a blog post.

“We believe that joining Google will help us innovate in new and unexplored areas of commerce,” it said.

Google Offers is a rival to Chicago-based Groupon, which offers subscribers online coupons for discounts on a broad range of consumer goods and services.

Deal of the Day: Google Buys The Dealmap

We’re thrilled to announce that The Dealmap has been acquired by Google.

In our first year alone, The Dealmap grew to more than two million users of our web, mobile, social and email products, and more than 85 million monthly visitors to our partner network. The journey that has led to this outcome has been an invigorating and rewarding one, and we are very proud of the innovative products and industry “firsts” we’ve created along the way.

We believe Google provides the ideal platform to help us accelerate our growth and fulfill our mission. We’re passionate about helping people save money while having great local experiences, and in Google we’ve found the perfect partner that shares this passion, as well as our vision and strategy. We believe that joining Google will help us innovate in new and unexplored areas of commerce.

For the time being, we will continue to support The Dealmap’s core products and partner services. People will still be able to access local and daily deals through The Dealmap website, mobile apps, and daily email, and we’ll continue supporting The Dealmap API and feeds for existing sourcing and distribution partners. As we’re ready to share more about integration and transition plans, we’ll update our partners and consumers on progress and any news.

Until then, we’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who has made reaching this milestone a possibility – our investors, our partners, all the people who sent us great feedback and encouragement, and especially the more than 2 million people who use our products.

Cheers,

The Dealmap Team
