Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Increase By 8% From 1H2010 To 1H2011

0

Intel remains the #1 IC supplier, according to a new report from IC Insights. As shown in Figure above, Intel remained firmly in control of the number one spot in the ranking.  In fact, Intel extended its lead over second-ranked Samsung by registering a 43% higher sales level than Samsung in 1H11 as compared to a 24% margin for all of 2010. Although Nvidia’s 1H11/1H10 sales increased by only 1%, it replaced Panasonic in the top 20 ranking.

In total, the top 20 semiconductor suppliers showed an 8% increase in 1H11 sales as compared to 1H10.  This growth rate is four points greater than the worldwide 1H11/1H10 semiconductor market growth rate of 4%.  Also, the to five 1H11/1H10 semiconductor sales growth rate increases were logged by non-memory suppliers.

  1. Infineon; 30% growth from continuing operations (23% using 1H10 exchange rates)
  2. Qualcomm; 29% jump due to surging smartphone IC sales
  3. Intel; 23% increase spurred in part by its acquisition of Infineon’s wireless business
  4. TSMC; 20% growth (10% using 1H10 exchange rates)
  5. Broadcom; 18% increase from strong wireless IC sales

Of the big five memory suppliers in the top 20 ranking (i.e., Samsung, Toshiba, Hynix, Micron, and Elpida), only Samsung and Toshiba registered 1H11/1H10 growth. In total, 10 of the top 20 suppliers outperformed the total worldwide semiconductor industry 1H11/1H10 growth rate of 4%, the report concludes.

Apple iPad Ranks Highest In Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty, Says IHS iSuppli

0

This is expected. Apple products are hot because the people love them. To have some scientific data behind this, IHS iSuppli did  a market study.  They asked tablet owners to indicate how they would recommend the iPad to others based on their use of the device on a scale of 1 to 10  with 10 being they were very likely to recommend it, 5 being neutral and 1 being they would not recommend it.

iPad owners gave an average rating of 8.8 to their Apple iPads, the highest rating of all the 11 top-ranked brands in the survey. More than 80 percent of Apple owners rated their tablet at 8 or higher on the recommendation scale. Fewer than 1 percent gave a rating of less than 5.

The results of the survey highlight the strong brand loyalty amongst the existing iPad owner customer base but also offer some hope for Apple’s main competitors amongst the group planning to purchase a tablet in the next six months. Apple led the pack in this group when purchasers were asked to indicate what brands they will consider for their tablet purchase but Samsung, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and RIM all received a substantial number of votes.

Existing owners reported far less price sensitivity than those planning to purchase tablets this year, which provides a definite opening for Apple competitors with a value sensitive price point.

The result is available in full in IHS iSuppli US. Tablet Consumer Preference service  which provides a reliable predictor of current and future demand trends for tablets including screen size, touch interface, features, pricing and retail experience. It also measures the impact of tablets on the purchases and usage of other equipment such as PCs, monitors, handsets and televisions.

Yahoo Mail Shows Signs Of Aging Today – Scheduled Maintenance Is Too Frequent

0

It is very obvious that Yahoo Mail is aging. The way Yahoo is running it shows that they are making that process faster and quicker. At around 10.45am Boston time, it was unavailable with the information that it was up for maintenance. We hope they fix it.
For most of us that use Yahoo Mail, have you noticed the news feeds you get when you log into your account. Most times, the news is a month ago old. You may be surprised to be reading that Obama has been elected President. The update is too slow and the database does not refresh as required. Hope they will fix that in this maintenance.

Scheduled Maintenance

We are undertaking some essential, but extensive maintenance to improve Yahoo! Mail. During the maintenance period, some users may experience problems accessing Yahoo! Mail.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Your account is in great shape and we are working to have it available again as quickly as possible.

It is certainly obvious that The Indigo Trust and The Omidyar Network have found good partners in each other. They have been co-funding projects though Omidyar still brings the big chunks. On Sept 15th in London, they will be hosting a conference titoled, “The Power of Information: New Technologies for Philanthropy and Development” .

The event will explore the ways in which innovative developments in information and computer technology can aid development, improve service delivery, enhance communication and enable critical information to reach the most excluded communities in the developing world.

Acer Iconia Smart Review – Smart In Name, Smart In Performance

3

The Iconia Smart is a very larger phone and is so large that, at times, it is hard to tell if it is a large phone or a small tablet. With a 4.8″ screen the Iconia Smart is only marginally smaller than the Dell Streak 5 that fell into the latter category of devices, but by rights should be understood as a phone. As can probably be imagined the larger screen has some benefits while having other drawbacks, most noticeably with carrying it about on your person.

The larger screen makes the Iconia Smart more ideal for viewing movies than smaller smartphone devices, and indeed even general web browsing is significantly improved with a roomier interface. The Iconia Smart comes with Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread installed with all the software and performance tweaks that come with it, and also runs with Acer UI 4.2 on top.

The 4.8″ screen is capacitive so it comes with multitouch input gestures supported, and also has one of the largest resolutions found on any smartphone at 480 x 1024. The Iconia also features a number of sensors including a proximity sensor and an accelerometer for autorotation of the interface, as well as one of the all new gyro sensors for multidirectional controls.

The Iconia Smart comes with some high speed connectivity options to aid in all forms of web and messaging features. This includes high speed HSPA connections as well Wi-Fi with DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct. These both provide you with more ways to connect the Iconia Smart to other devices, including home TVs. In this way you can enjoy videos from the Iconia Smart on a larger screen in the comfort of your living room.

There are plenty of great multimedia features to put this to good use with. The media player on board comes with a wide range of support for music and video, and there is also an additional HDMI port to provide another means of hooking up your TV. The Iconia Smart comes with up to 40GB storage with microSD cards, and as well as offline entertainment you can enjoy online video with YouTube and Adobe Flash support.

The Iconia Smart comes with some great touchscreen games available, with many more available from Android Market. Here you can get hold of many apps to further enhance the phone. On top of this the Iconia Smart comes with a very high quality 8 megapixel camera that features 720p video recording, and photos can be easily uploaded to share online either through Facebook or Picasa. The Iconia Smart also features a secondary 2 megapixel camera that can be used for video calling.

The Iconia Smart offers a great range of features in terms of entertainment and messaging. It is superb for all forms of online activity and the large screen makes it ideal for games and videos. While packing a powerful smartphone punch the only thing that may deter some people from this phone is the large screen which some people may find too big for comfort, although others may find that it is just what they are looking for in a mobile device.
