Good Progress! Still The Risk is High – 4% is Huge for HIV Infection Gamble

0

A new study shows that people with HIV under a regime will not transmit it to their partners, 96% of the time. The rate goes up to 99% if they get HSV 2 / herpes 2 screening as well. This does not cure them, but it just reduces the rate they infect other people. People, do not try it, because 4% risk is still a huge number. Be cool and be wise and do not be deceived that exposing your life for 96% statistics is a good thing. Just make it 100% reduction and avoid acting silly.

The study was done by HPTN

Washington, DC – Men and women infected with HIV reduced the risk of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners through initiation of oral antiretroviral therapy (ART), according to findings from a large multinational clinical study conducted by the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), a global partnership dedicated to reducing the transmission of HIV through cutting-edge biomedical, behavioral, and structural interventions.

The study, known as HPTN 052, was designed to evaluate whether immediate versus delayed use of ART by HIV-infected individuals would reduce transmission of HIV to their HIV-uninfected partners and potentially benefit the HIV-infected individual as well. Findings from the study were reviewed by an independent Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).The DSMB recommended that the results be released as soon as possible and that the findings be shared with study participants and investigators. The DSMB concluded that initiation of ART by HIV-infected individuals substantially protected their HIV-uninfected sexual partners from acquiring HIV infection, with a 96 percent reduction in risk of HIV transmission. HPTN 052 is the first randomized clinical trial to show that treating an HIV-infected individual with ART can reduce the risk of sexual transmission of HIV to an uninfected partner.

The Tablet Geography of Nigeria – Why The Local Players Could Compete

0

We are updating our earlier post with the newer entrances included.  Huawei made the tablet for MTN.

The S7 Slim is a little thinner than the original Huawei S7 tablet and it loses the optical finger navigation area from the side of the display. It also replaces the 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen display with a capacitive touchscreen. Unfortunately the screen resolution is still stuck at 800 x 480 pixels. The tablet runs Google Android 2.2 and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It has USB and HDMI ports, a microSD card slot, and a rear-facing camera. The S7 Slim supports 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS connectivity. According to CarryPad, the Huawei S7 Slim is expected to retail for under $300.

Though there is very little known about the Huawei S7 Pro, it does appear to have a thin aluminum case, HDMI and USb ports, and both front and rear-facing cameras. Despite that, MTN Nigeria has already started selling the S7 to subscribers. According to the advertorials on this product, MTN will be offering the product with a free MTN SIM, 3GB data allowance, 180 minutes of free calls and SMS at the price of N81,000.00. It still remains to be seen how the S7 will perform amidst competition with iPad, Galaxy and even Playbook.

Comments

The tablet warfare will not be won by ad money, rather cost-efficiency.  The discretionary incomes of most Nigerians will not support a N125,000 tablet when a new laptop sells  below N50,000. You need to do better than laptop to penetrate the mass market as people remain very price-sensitive. Of course, unless you plan to serve only the bank CEOs and the top captains of the industry that can afford to transfer that cost to their companies.

The true battle will be fought this summer when all these local guys have all the new products in the market. They are coming with quality and great features that can compete with the foreign players. And they are affordable.  This is a new market and the competition will just increase.
