The shift towards a knowledge-based economy has fundamentally changed how value is created and captured. Intellectual property, once a niche legal area, is now at the core of competitive advantage for businesses across all sectors. Understanding the various forms of IP, their respective protections, and the strategic implications of managing them is no longer optional but essential for survival and growth.
For IP, while legal frameworks vary by country, the fundamental principle remains: protecting your intellectual creations is key to monetizing them and ensuring that the benefits of your innovation accrue to you and your business. By proactively engaging with IP strategy, companies and individuals can transform ideas into valuable, defensible assets that drive long-term success and impact.
In today’s Tekedia Mini-MBA lecture, Freddy Guemeni will explain the broad universe of IPs and why managing IPs is at the core of building sustainable competitive advantages in markets. Recently, he extended this teaching by demonstrating how IP can be at the core of the One Oasis Strategy, a strategic framework I brought into the world of business, through Harvard Business Review, using the Dangote Group as a case study. While the piece is awaiting Journal publication, we expect Mr. Guemeni to explain to our co-learners this convergence of strategy and IP.
