Note: There are spoilers for The Simpsons' 37th season in this article. One figure has formally bid the warm, luminous glow of television farewell.
In episode seven from the 37th season of The Simpsons, one of the show's most enduring characters was killed off when Alice Glick, the organist for Springfield's First Church, collapsed upon her organ and passed away unexpectedly during a sermon by Reverend Lovejoy.
The remainder of the episode, "Sashes to Sashes," revolved around her passing, with Alice donating her fortune to Springfield Elementary in order to support the school's new music program. But when Mayor Quimby's son proposed utilizing the funds for a three-day musical festival, her attempts from beyond the dead were all but dashed.
Lisa Simpson was offended by the notion and went to great lengths to unearth truths about the Quimby family while pushing her brother Bart Simpson to challenge the younger Quimby for president of the student council. Fortunately, Mrs. Glick's program wishes were ultimately preserved.
Unexpectedly, this was Alice Glick's second death on The Simpsons. In season 23 of the venerable animated series, the character was apparently killed by a rogue robot seal, and depending on the demands of the scene, she later appeared as both a living person and a ghost.
However, at that point, executive producer Tim Long affirmed that Mrs. Glick has permanently said adieu.
"In a sense, Alice the organist will live forever, through the beautiful music she made," in a statement released on November 18, he informed People. "But in another, more important sense, yep she's dead as a doornail."
Cloris Leachman provided the character's original voice when she made her debut in the season two episode "Three Men and a Comic Book." However, Tress MacNeille contributed her voice in later appearances.
And her departure saddened her adoring fans.
“Alice Glick died once again in Season 37, Episode 7,” on X, a user remarked. “Nooo.”
In season 35, another mentioned the recent passing of barfly Larry "The Lush" Dalrymple, stating, “1st Larry, now Alice Glick. The Simpsons are killing off everyone….”
However, The Simpsons has been broadcasting for more than 35 years, so they constantly strive to keep things interesting.
