Elisabeth Hasselbeck shares how she broke royal protocol during an awkward meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.

After meeting Queen Elizabeth II, Elisabeth Hasselbeck learned a lot about royal protocol. The View veteran described meeting the late British queen at a White House state banquet held by former President George W. Bush during her week-long guest cohosting stint on the ABC talk show. However, the event didn't exactly go as planned.

“I had so much static electricity, I was so nervous,” Elisabeth, 48, revealed this on The Weekend View's March 7 program. “I had no idea what to do when I got there.”

The TV personality acknowledged that she made a serious royal faux pas since her anxiety got the better of her.

“I went in for a hug—it didn’t go well,” she added. “It was very awkward when I went in there.”

Elisabeth disclosed that she unintentionally drank from a fingerbowl at the event, so her crash training in manners didn't finish there.

“I remember this chalice of something,” she clarified. “I'm mid-sip and Jeb Bush lean over, Condoleezza Rice is at my other side, and he’s like, ‘You might not want to drink that. That's for your hands.’”

Elisabeth's encounter with the Queen, who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96, wasn't particularly easy, but she wasn't the first to make a mistake when interacting with the British royal family. During a recent public event in Powys, Wales, Kate Middleton really managed to avoid violating royal protocol when a guest approached her with a pen and requested her autograph.

“I can’t sign things, I’m so sorry,” in a video released by Hello! on February 27, Kate, 44, stated. “I can shake your hand, though.”

The Princess of Wales is all too familiar with the regulation that prohibits members of the royal family from signing documents in order to prevent forgeries. She chose not to autograph drawings she created with a group of youngsters at an event in London in 2022, which put her in a similar situation.

“My name’s Catherine,” according to Tekedia, she informed the children at that point. “I’m not allowed to write my signature—it’s just one of those rules.”
