Martin Sheen's response to watching Charlie Sheen's documentary.

Martin Sheen desires for his son to be the center of attention. The two-part film's director, Andrew Renzi, revealed the actor's well-known father's feelings about bringing his turbulent real-life story to life two days after Charlie Sheen's Netflix documentary, Charlie Sheen, was aired.

In a Sept. 11 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director said, "I watched the documentary sitting next to Martin," adding that the West Wing star was the "scariest person" to watch the video with. "I was, like, sitting next to the president of the United States, watching one of the earlier cuts of this film."

But in the end, Andrew did not need his nerves. After all, he claimed, Martin, who chose not to participate in the project's interview together with Charlie's brother Emilio Estevez, was still in favor of the outcome.

"My perspective on it was that he wanted his son to have his moment to tell his story," Andrew clarified, "and didn’t feel like he needed to add to all of the stuff that he lived throughout."

Additionally, Andrew managed to give a credit to the patriarch even though Martin might not have spoken his viewpoint on his son's life in the documentary.

"I had a way to put him into the story that he felt was almost better, [so] sitting for an interview wasn’t necessary," he stated. "And Emilio felt sort of the same."

A number of people from the Two and a Half Men alum's inner circle were interviewed for the first installment of aka Charlie Sheen, which debuted on Netflix on September 10. These people included his costar on the sitcom Jon Cryer, his longtime friend Sean Penn, and his ex-wife Denise Richards, with whom he shares daughters Sami Sheen, 21, and Lola Sheen, 20. (Charlie is also the father of twin sons, Bob and Max, 16, with ex Brooke Mueller, and a daughter, Cassandra, 40, with ex Paula Profit.)

The show explores Charlie's life in a number of ways, including his Hollywood career, his three marriages, and his sexual orientation, in addition to his long-standing battles with drug addiction.

Andrew's primary objective for the year-long initiative was to establish a secure environment in which Charlie, who is now sober, could be open about any subject that arose.

"There’s sort of this grab bag of things that I wanted to protect him about," the director revealed. "I didn’t want him to feel like he was saying things that he maybe didn’t want to say."
