Ruby Rose Recalls Being Branded a “Baby Killer” After Finding Fatally Injured Boy as a Teen.

More than ten years prior to her breakthrough performance on Orange Is the New Black, Ruby Rose was the subject of a police inquiry. The actress recalled being accused of being a “baby killer” at 15 in her native Australia after she and a childhood friend, while smoking their first cigarette, came across a badly injured boy on a playground.

"I saw something on play equipment. I went, 'Oh!' I thought it was a doll hanging," on the September 19 episode of Kaitlyn Bristowe's Off the Vine podcast, she related the story. "As we got close enough, we could tell this was a real baby human—like a 4½-year-old. There was blood coming out of his ears, nose and mouth. It was very traumatic."

The Batwoman alum picked up the kid and hurried him to a gathering of people at a neighboring residence after Rose, now 40, and her companion sought assistance right after.

"I thought I'd saved his life because there was a big deep breath," as an ambulance was dispatched to the residence, Rose went on to describe how CPR was carried out. "And I was like, 'Oh my god. Thank goodness.'"

While Rose first believed the boy would recover, she later discovered that his condition worsened and that he eventually died in the hospital after being “brain dead for so long.”

In the days that followed, Rose was questioned by officials while she dealt with the "horrific" experience.

"The police turned up at my school," she recalled that as a result of the experience, her classmates began to bully her. "People were like, 'Baby killer!' I was just breaking down left, right and center."

Thankfully, the truth was finally revealed when the boy's elder brother recovered from a bout of dissociative amnesia, a mental illness that causes people to forget things because of stress or trauma.

"What did eventually happen was the older brother remembered," Rose explained how the young boy's death was caused by a rare accident. "He'd pushed his brother down the slide. The brother had been caught [and he was] trying to get him off the nail."

Rose said that the elder sibling, unable to release the youngster, "freaks out when he starts to see blood" and flees for two weeks with "no memory" of what happened.

"He finally had the memory and went back to the police," the DJ added. "I was cleared, but that [the mom] still didn't want me at the funeral. So, everyone else went except for me."

To this day, Rose continues to remember the boy’s death and the investigation that followed. The experience also influenced her growing interest in human psychology as she got older.

"My whole life, I studied psychology like somebody would have the same kind of emphasis on being famous," she went on to say. "I was really interested in the insides of people."
