For the royal family's Commonwealth Day, activities will be a little different. The BBC declared that it will not broadcast the event for the first time in 37 years as King Charles III, Prince William, and other members of the royal family assemble in Westminster Abbey on March 9 to commemorate the day of celebration in London.
"Our decision not to broadcast the Commonwealth Day Ceremony in the same way we’ve done in previous years reflects the difficult choices we have to make in light of our funding challenges,” in a statement to HELLO, the BBC claimed “We can confirm BBC News plans to cover the service across its platforms, including the BBC One bulletins and rolling news channel."
The multi-faith ceremony, which honors the Commonwealth's 56 member states, will be replaced by BBC's reality TV program Escape the Country during its regular time slot. Since 1989, the BBC has televised the ceremony annually, with the exception of 2021, when the coronavirus epidemic forced the transmission to be canceled.
One of the few occasions each year when senior members of the royal family go out together is Commonwealth Day. Indeed, as is customary, Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton, the wives of King Charles and Prince William, are anticipated to accompany them.
The royal family's first combined public appearance since Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, was detained and then released on February 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office due to his alleged connections to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Charles, who took the throne in 2023 after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away, gave a sneak peek at this year's message ahead of the big day.
"It is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed," the BBC released a sneak peek of the King's speech on March 7, stating that the Commonwealth is "force for good, grounded in community, committed to the kind of restorative sustainability that has a return on investment, enriched by culture, steadfast in its care for our planet, and united in friendship and in the service of its people.”
