I have a dream that one day…Africa’s educational system will become a lab for the future!

1

The microprocessor worked – and the university asked the University Press to document it. I just realized that those photos were actually filed and archived in the university library. And today, Getty Images licenses them globally. That was my PhD research which was patented. In 2017, I signed some paperworks for the US Government to use in NASA’s latest mission into space. I had designed it for robots that operate inside humans. But it turns out that the dexterity my chip delivers – 34 axial movements – could be useful when astronauts try to control objects in space.

May the Lord give Africa great leaders, to turn village boys and girls, into high priests of innovation via quality education. That is a simple prayer but it is a momentous one! America’s factory works wonders and they have got many miracles in the labs. Ordinary people transformed to become productive contributors in a way even the actors cannot explain.

I have a dream that one day…our educational system will become a lab for the future!

Be undefined because you have DEFINED yourself

1

Words matter – pay attention to what you tell others. As a kid in the village, some friends used to tease, “your eyes are big”. One day, I made it home and asked my mother, “why do they say that”. She replied, “you need big eyes to see mathematics better”.  The next day that came, I had a good answer, “with my big eyes, I see mathematics better”; I actually did as that was the only reason I liked school. One went home and wept that he needed bigger eyes too!  (My eyes seem normal though but rabbit bush hunting, feeding smoke into the burrows, did many things to the eyes!.)

But here is the message: how you react to words from men and women is more important than what they say. My initiation in America was a Walmart clerk telling me insultingly that I had an accent. My response: “That is fine but yours is an accented version of the real English invented in England”. Her mouth opened because I just told her that even her English was not the original.

Do not allow words from distractors to define your destiny. The most unfortunate thing in the world is associating prestige, influence and relevance to how people earn a living, thereby making it possible for people to define the worlds of others. But you could be undefined!

Yes, be undefined by others because you have DEFINED yourself. It is a fact as in mathematics because problems are largely solved after the variables have been clearly mapped and defined!

Be inspired by others but try to live your life

The world seems like it is falling apart and nothing seems to work. The job has not come. I read lines like “my career is in a mess” from members these days. I have these words today for you: do not be too hard on yourself. If you look deeper, you are making progress. To get to that next level you are dreaming, you must use the progress you have made ALREADY.

Most times, our success was past tense and always forgotten because the next level has not come! How would you move to the next level when the already achieved progress has been discarded? She made Second Class Lower (2.2) in college, and the god is now 2.2. For her, she has not achieved anything. Unless you see that 2.2 as progress, that next level would not come.

You see this man in this photo? He has a small template on how to live in our time. When ABU Zaria confirmed his degree that he made a 3rd class, the next day he wore an academic gown to the Senate, celebrating his win.  Call him names, he built on that and he has a life today.

There is no job/office someone has not resigned from. If you look deeper, most things mean nothing. But we can make ourselves something. Do not be too hard on yourself – you are making progress! But keep pushing! Be inspired by others but try to live your life.

Comment: Thank you, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe. I think another issue is the comparison between where one is and where one thinks one should be at that time. Suddenly, all other successes don’t matter because I am not even where I think I should be by now.

My Response: Absolutely. That is the issue. We can indeed get to that next level but it is key we appreciate how far we have come. I do not see how one can progress if one does not like himself or herself. Yes, people do “hate” themselves making things harder to advance. My perspective in career changed when as a young banker in Lagos, the bank hired a senior manager who lasted just 3 days. The rumour was that he did not like banking job because he could not get home early for dinner with his family. He was hired from one of the FMCGs, possibly with bigger pay. But he dropped all those for family dinner! Yet, that is the same job many would work if allowed 24/7 to keep.
