Twenty Companies That Made Tekedia Broad Industrial Average (TBIA) – An Index Of Nigerian Stock Exchange

0

Tekedia Broad Industrial Average (TBIA) is a stock market index created by Tekedia Intelligence, a division of Fasmicro. It is an index that shows how twenty large, publicly owned companies, based in Nigeria have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market. To emphasis that this index is not restricted to any particular industry such as technology, transportation or banking, we included the word “Broad”. The word, “industrial”, was used within the constructs of different markets. For example, we have the banking industry, hotel and tourism industry, and so one with no implied connotation to the industrial era. We understand that many of the companies in the index are knowledge driven, yet, they operate in an industry.

In this short post, we present the twenty companies that made the Index. More on the index in coming hours with our White Paper on this historic project.

A Tale Of Two Countries And A City – Lagos, All Eyes Are On You

0

By Olubode Olatunji

The geography is naturally not conducive to agriculture. More than half of the land is desert; only 20% of the land is naturally arable. Other land area was mostly semi-arid, rendered unutiliasable by deforestation, soil erosion and other natural elements. Added to the terrible state of farmlands is also major water problem. With an uneven distribution of rainfall across the country, every single drop of water each year was needed.

The odds were indeed stacked against this country.

But with various innovations, the story changed. The desire to transform the land, then a barren and disease-ridden region, into a modern state was a key factor in subsequent scientific inquiry and technological development.

With innovations came revolutions in agricultural methods. Rocky fields were cleared and claimed, terraces constructed; swampland drained, reforesting ensued, soil erosion counteracted and salty land washed. Water-saving techniques were searched out which spurred the development of many types of computer-controlled irrigation systems, including the drip method, which directs water flow and nutrients straight to the root zone of plants so that smaller amounts could be used efficiently. With the drive to increase yields and crop quality came the development of new seed and plant varieties. In addition, a variety of equipment were designed, manufactured and implemented for tilling, sowing, planting, harvesting, collecting, sorting and packing.

With a population of 7.8million and only 3.7% of the work force involved in agriculture, this naturally agriculture disadvantaged country became one of the world’s leading fresh citrus producers and exporters and also grows over forty types of fruits. Israel’s agriculture continues to thrive, and produces 95% of its own food requirements.

South Africa has similar story. About two thirds of the country is arid or semi-arid. Only 13 percent of its surface area can be used for crop production. Rainfall is also unreliable and unevenly distributed across the country. There can be long drought periods, as well as devastating floods. But curiously, South Africa is not only self sufficient in virtually all major agricultural products but also a net food exporter, making it 1 of 6 countries in the world capable of exporting food on a regular basis.

Contrast this with our dear country Nigeria. 80 percent of our land is cultivable. Most part of the country experience rich soil, good rainfall and warm year-round temperatures. Nigeria’s diverse climate, from the tropical areas of the coast to the arid zone of the north, make it possible to produce virtually all agricultural products that can be grown in the tropical and semi-tropical areas of the world. In spite of all these endowments and the engagement of about 70 percent of the labour force in this sector, the country cannot still self-feed.

Our import bill on agriculture produce has been on a continuous increase from early 90s and today, it has assumed a phenomenal level. Nigeria’s food balance sheet is in a terrible state.

But there is a ray of hope. And it is a novelty in its own right. For Lagos State is indeed land poor. So, the proposed acquisition of farmlands outside the state by the government for the cultivation of rice should be lauded and encouraged. It takes a visionary and innovative leader to take this route. Knowing the antecedent of the Lagos State Government headed by Babatunde Raji Fashola, it can be taken as certain that the project if and when embarked upon will be a success.

Who knows? This may serve as the tonic that will jolt other governors to see the goldmine that is wasting away in their states. Who knows? This innovative idea may birth other innovative ideas that would lead to a revolution in the agriculture sector of our economy. Who knows? This may herald the new dawn we have long been eagerly awaiting.

Lagos city, all eyes are on you.

David Cameron – The Emerging Worst British PM In Modern Era Plans To Censor The Web

1

Hope you do like the accent of the British man. They own the English and we like them. We love the BBC and genuinely love the British. But if they allow this new man that is running that country to stay longer, they may lose their voices. David Cameron has turned out to be ineffective and simply not ready to lead the UK.

Last year or so we listened to this man via satellite in one of TED conferences. He was full of ideas. He spoke of freedom, wealth and accountability. But now he is running the show, he seems to be taking talking points from the Chinese. Can you imagine he wants to censure internet in UK if they allow him?

Yes, in an emergency session of Parliament on Thursday, the PM said that the violence, looting and arson sweeping his country “were organized via social media.” Yes, we have reported it that Blackberry and Facebook were used as tools in that. He said his government is now considering how and whether to “stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.” How will they know, exactly?

Now, they have given the Chinese liberation. On Friday, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency published a commentary berating the man for chasticing them for Interne freedom as he said recently when he  proclaimed that freedom of expression should be respected in Tahrir Square as much as in London’s Trafalgar Square. Read the people of China:

“We may wonder why Western leaders, on the one hand, tend to indiscriminately accuse other nations of monitoring, but on the other take for granted their steps to monitor and control the Internet,” Xinhua said. “For the benefit of the general public, proper Web-monitoring is legitimate and necessary.”. The spokesman of the government went to conclude:  “The Chinese government’s legal management of the Internet is in line with international practice.”

Now, tell us what is the difference. It is easy to blame other nations when they have strategic interests in anything and when that comes to your side, you do the same. China is a time bomb that can explode and while censorship is not good, if the British sees such an impending danger, they may do the same. The only country that will NEVER censor the web in the world is Nigeria because they do not know how. My President will not do that but some of the governors will like to censor the web in their states!

If the British will allow Mr. Cameron to censor the web, that means we are very certain their march to Congo has just begun. Hope they vote him out of office in the next general election as his era is turning out to be overly heated.

17 Technical Citations On Our Journal Article Predicting The Challenges Of Ultra Deep Submicron CMOS Technologies

0

This piece was written in 2006 and was well received in the technical community. It has been been published in IEEE Potentials. In it, we predicted the challenges of the ultra deep submicron CMOS technologies. Then we offered roadmaps to solving them. We just checked today; 17 people have cited it. Notice that due to how Google Scholar works, there are usually more citations than recorded. A single mistake in the title or the way the name is written will throw Google algorithms into limbo. But even the 17 is not bad. To get cited in a technical journal is not a piece of cake or ice cream. This is the original paper in case you want to read. In it, we modeled the transistor down to the 64nm CMOS when it was just coming. In short, this work was one of the earliest to have done it.
