Nigeria Stock Exchange Stock Movement Is Disconnected From Earnings

0

Have you noticed what has been happening in Nigeria’s stock exchange? Most of the companies that are reporting good earnings are not getting any love in their stock prices. It does seem that investors are not moved by the numbers the companies are reporting. This has been the big challenge in the nation’s exchange – the correlation between earning is not immediate on investor’s decision. You can return good growth, profits; yet, nothing happens. It is like the investors are not aware of your progress.

In the exchange, you can report a great number and still see your stock go down. Why? The  investors are looking beyond the numbers. It is like  – what is the fundamental behind those numbers?

What happened in 2008 was an eye opener to investors. They like good numbers but also do not believe all they see or read. They think the accounting profession in Nigeria is still evolving and weak. After all, most of the banks that needed help from CBN in 2009 were all audited and certified to be in clean state. Yet, there was rot in the system.

What moves markets in Nigeria is paying dividend. If you are a dividend paying company, you will get a lot of traction. Why? That is one thing investors truly believe in. At least they are paid and they get the money in their pockets. Why the stock can go up and go down,  a divided guarantees them financial security.

In the New York Stock Exchange, the same effect is taking shape. The present earning season is disconnected from the market. Most of the companies that returned good numbers were punished because of the economic crises. Investors are looking beyond the companies to the whole health of the economy. So, that shows one thing – companies exist in economies. Except Priceline, most companies have been beaten in the last few days in NYSE because of the debt ceiling debate, euro debts and general lackluster performance of the economy.

The Latest From Online Music Streaming Sector – Spotify Takes Command

0

The arrival of Spotify in U.S. in July 2011 was well received. Celebrities like Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher and Trent Reznor have pushed the marketing and promotion in Twitter to a new level. This company cannot be luckier when some A-listers are openly acknowledging they were using the product even before the government gave it go ahead to begin to stream music in U.S. There is no other better way to promote or introduce a product in the market than the way Spotify had it in the month of July.

Spotify is a Swedish DRM-based music streaming service offering streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal.Launched in October 2008 by Swedish startup Spotify AB, the service had approximately ten million users as of 15 September 2010; about 1 million of whom were paying members. The service is, as of July 2011, only available in Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. This is the the latest from the Spotify buzz and online music sector in general:

  • Spotify will get into Facebook soon and users can then share music and also help friends know what their friends are playing and listening to
  • iTunes is lagging behind in this sector and is poised to be one of the failed projects under Steve Jobs in the last few years. Since its launch in Sept, Apple has not promoted it to users. It is losing steam and arguable a failed endeavor from Apple
  • Justin Timberlake is revamping Myspace since he co-bought it from News Corp. He wants to return the site to its root – music
  • Turntable.fm is helping people play DJ and then rate others based on their playing habits. This company needs a lot of work to compete in this sector very well.
  • Though Spotify has the agreements with the major music label owners like Universal, Sony,EMI and Warmer – an indeed a sign of approval and confidence from those that matter, it is yet to have a strategy for most developing world. This means that anyone with a good tech skill can replicate their model for local artists and record labels.

African Union – Act To Save The Famine Ravaged East Africans

0

This is a very short one. We do not make political commentaries here. But the famine in East Africa is reshaping Africa to the past. Things we have tried to move past and beyond. Hunger, famine, naked kids and unbelievable tragedies.

Where is the African Union? The world is beaming the searchlight showing kids that are dying. We need AU to step us and act. This is the time to stop those conferences and save money to help these kids in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somali. Please do.

If you cannot do this, then it makes no sense to have this AU. Nations must rise and help others and Africa has a duty right now to act and save these people. America is nearly bankrupt. Europe is under water. And China does not help where there are no minerals. So, you must figure out how to solve these problems and help the families.
